Title: Medieval SFX
Post by: AlexB on July 27, 2004, 06:33:48 AM
While researching the Devil, I came across this stage direction for the 15th century morality play 'The Castle of Perseverance':
And he that shall play Belial look that he have gunpowder burning in pipes in his hands, and in his ears and in his arse when that he goes to battle

I do hope they used slow burning powder

I think it was Blackbeard who would put slow burning fuses in his beard, and light them to produce a more menacing appearance.  He must have gotten that from the stage.  Never realized he was a patron of the arts.

That explains why Yellowbeard was doing it. I never quite understood that.

I don't imagine the devil was a highly sought after role in the 15th century, although they might find somebody who would get a thrill out of appearing on stage with a pipe full of burning gunpowder shoved up his bum.

Interesting point about Blackbeard. Perhaps the more theatrical pirates were imitating the look of the stage baddies much like present day gangsters try to imitate the Godfather. Does anybody know anything about this?

As to what I was doing, a friend of mine is laying on a Medieval extravaganza, including, amongst others, some demons. With a degree in Medieval History and an unhealthy interest in things satanical, I was an obvious choice to do the research.
