Title: 13 Days
Post by: Eirik on August 21, 2004, 05:00:45 PM
Rented this the other day despite it having Costner.  Actually, it wasn't bad.  Historiclly, it took a few liberties for the sake of dramatics and story telling...

-  No, the Cubans shooting at a US plane that had invaded its airspace would not have given General LeMay the green light to nuke Moscow.
-  No, Kostner's character probably wasn't really as close to the action and integral as he was made out to be.

...but none of the real truths of the story suffred like they do in a lot of historical movies.  The beginning part actually uses the declassified satellite photos that led the CIA to conclude the missiles had been snuck in.  I guess the biggest problem is that it was kind of bland in its execution, much like Apollo 13, aside from a couple of aerial recon under fire scenes and a kind of ominous scene outside the Soviet embassy.  But a good movie for anyone who feels (probably justifiably) the the education system failed him or her and wants to learn about the Cuban Missile Crisis.  I'll rent it again for my kids in a few years.
