Title: From Hell=kick ass
Post by: mugwump on October 27, 2001, 07:15:30 PM
just got through seeing from hell yesterday, i gotta say it kicked ass. very "trippy" film if you know what i mean, a must for fans of dark films, like Sleep Hallow (Burton version), etc. i left the theatre with the feeling that something crawled inside of me and died. no film has done that me to me in a while, you gotta love that!

I enjoyed FROM HELL quite a bit, actually.  However, cliche that this is, I was spoiled by the book.

Don't get me wrong, the graphic novel and the movie are two different entities.  If you were intrigued by the conspiracy running through the movie, or would like to know more about what the Ripper was actually talking about, check out Alan Moore's story.

I also think it's funny that the comic is actually more violent than the movie.

thanks for the info. yeah the film didn't run so much on gore to make it creepy, it was more of the very creative, dark atmoshpere the filmmakers were shooting for that gave it that feeling.

I loved it too.  Especially the opium shots homage to Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America (the shots were composed exactly the same way).

I hadn't read the graphic novel, so I was worried that the ending was going to disappoint in a Hollywood kind of way.  I was pleasantly surprised that it did not.

Excellent film.
