Title: Worst Drive-In Movie
Post by: Menard on December 22, 2004, 04:22:22 AM
For some reason I was reminiscing about the drive-in and of course the thought of bad movies and other experiences came up.I used to go to the drive-in regularly during the Summers in the early eighties to see three, four, and even five horror movies in one night; and this for $3.00. As you could well imagine quite a few of these were slasher flicks; and quite a few were really bad.One that, for some reason, has stood out over the years as a really bad slasher movie is 'Horror Hospital' which starred Barbi Benton (and don't you dare say "Who is Barbi Benton?").'Horror Hospital' (A.K.A. 'Be My Valentine, Or Else!' and 'Ward 13') was directed by Boaz 'The Last American Virgin' Davidson (that is a reference to a movie title and not Boaz personally). This is a movie about young girl humiliates young unstable boy boy on Valentine's Day; young unstable boy kills young girls friend; young girl grows up to be Barbi Benton (what luck!) and visits hospital for a check-up where unknown to her, young unstable boy has grown up to be a doctor at that very hospital.'Horror Hospital' falls into the category of embarrassingly bad. The soundtrack consists of several people chanting "he sees her" repeatedly. There is a scene where a doctor is stabbed through the back of the head with some kind of pick and as he is sliding down the wall, you can clearly see that the pick is bouncing on some type of shoulder mount device on the other side of his head. A doctor preparing for surgery washes his hands with plain bar soap, turns the faucet off with his bare hands, and dries his hands on a towel that was already hanging there. And yes, the actor playing the killer apparently graduated from Overactors R Us University. What is really a kick in the crotch is that Boaz Davidson accomplishes what was previously thought to be impossible: to make a topless examination of Barbi Benton boring.Besides the movies there are other experiences at the drive-in (get your mind out of the gutter). When I saw 'Evil Dead' at the drive-in, a carload of drunks sqeezed into the space next to me (don't get ahead of me). As the movie really got going into the gory scenes I was additionally being serenaded by the sound of constant hurling coming from the drunks.Of course this was back when the drive-in showed movies that were not being shown at the walk-in. Now we have only one drive-in left in the area and they show the same mainstream releases as the walk-ins. Culture has gone to the dogs (:Does anybody have a memorable movie or experience from the drive-in?Bob

In the 70's they use to have dusk to dawn movies with only the first 2 films being regular feature and the rest extremely B-movies. We would usually stay for the first two then we would go home, but a few times we would stay get a glimpse of some bizarre stuff before they would decide it was time to take the kids home.

Alas, the Starlite Drive-In in Tacoma has become the Starlite Swap-and-Shop; the screen still stands, but the speakers and stands have been replaced by cheap vendor canopies and rickety tables where toothless old farts and pimply geeks hawk rusty saw blades and suspicious audio equipment.  I remember seeing "The Legend of Boggy Creek,"  "The Legend of Hell House," and the original "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" at this place, best damn hot dogs I ever had outside Cheney Stadium. Hell, even the concession stand has been replaced by the "vendor pavilion" which holds 200 vendor stands.  A sad time for American cinema.

Worst Drive-In movie I remember seeing was "Magaforce." Of course I was only about 6 then and  I was hoping to collect their action figures but they were never made. : (

Even though I mentioned 'Horror Hospital' as one of the worst movies I had seen at the drive-in, one of the god awful worst movies I have ever seen at the drive-in was 'Fear No Evil' which was a poor take-off on 'The Omen' and any similarity ended there. 'Horror Hospital' at times, even as bad as it was, had its' tongue in its' cheek. 'Fear No Evil' was wretchedly bad and they took themselves seriously. I posted a review for 'Fear No Evil' on Amazon.com and refered to it as my litmus test when checking out a movie review guide. If a reviewer gave this movie anything other than a turkey, they should not be writing a review guide.Bob

Onionhead LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK is one of the great ones. Saw it when very young and I thought that was interesting and scary.

Menard FEAR NO EVIL was a poor film, I was hoping it would be better. Saw it about 2 years ago.

The Starlight Swap Meet/Flea Market! I think that's where I sold my Pooh Bear, when I became *a man*. Saw the Boggy Creek movies on TV only recently, on that channel 11 Saturday show that Chris Cashman hosted for awhile. I think he's related to Pat Cashman.
