Title: Am I a freak?
Post by: Faerie Of Death on March 12, 2001, 11:45:15 PM
A question for all you happy b-movie fans out there: how many of you are women?  And if you're not women, how many women b-movie fans do you know?  I honestly want to know how much of a freak I am, being a woman and a b-movie fan and a role-player and a whole bunch of other typically male @!#$.  And, yes, I am a heterosexual.  Really.

I've only met two other people who were true b-movie fans since I moved to Phoenix.  One of them is a woman, and she gets far worse movies than I would consider watching.  She did balk at HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS, though.

My mom's a bigger B-movie fan than I am.  She was actually *looking forward* to Python after hearing about it from a newspaper review (since she's a big fan of Casper Van Dien, the world's goofiest actor).  She watches AMC EFX almost religiously.  I got her The Giant Claw for Christmas and she was the happiest mom in the world, and she practically knows every scene of The Alligator People by heart.

Man!  Who do you have to kill to get a mom like that?

My mom doesn't even like =good= movies, let alone bad ones.  About the only thing she can stand is Masterpiece Theatre and she even hates most of those.

I've shown my own mother select scenes from Dead Alive, though I believe she thinks it more strange than humorous. My ex loved b-flicks. Our b-movie nights nowadays see more people than ever, but most of the women that show up for the punishment tend to shy away from the gorier flicks.
Not sure how rare a trait it is to find in women, but there are worse things that you could spend your time doing.
At least, I think so.

Yes, you are a freak.

Now get back in that kitchen. You shouldn't be wasting time watching movies when there's work to be done. Unless your man says it's OK.

My wife Dixie loves 'em bad bad bad -- she is an orthodox Ed Wood Jr. freak -- and was, in her own words, "proud of me" for Andrew's evisceration of Robochic --
speaking of which -- yo, Andrew, you did mail that back, didn't you?  Still haven't seen it in the mail --
Anyway, I think that many women won't try to "get" bad-movie fun because it seems like a "guy" thing to them.  They are fewer in number, but perhaps you can have a gals' badfilm night and help change the ratio.
You go, girl!

My next chance to see a Post Office during their business hours will be Friday and I intend to drop that puppy in the mail then.  Hopefully the laws about sending dangerous material don't apply to really bad movies.

Sorry for the delay.

Andrew

Title: Not at all!
Post by: Andrew on March 13, 2001, 08:34:36 PM
As you can see Abby (her nickname) stops by, when her own b-movie site allows.  I receive about 100 emails a day, with about half of those requiring a reply - even if it is only a quick "thank you."  Out of those 50, probably a dozen are from females of the species.  You most certainly are not alone.

Oddly enough, Katie loves slasher flicks.  I'd rather watch a monster film or science fiction movie, but she just digs watching some guy run rampant with a hatchet.

Punish!

Yay!  And now that I think of it, my own mother might have secretly enjoyed Dead Alive, though my sister was of a differing opinion. . .

You're a superfreak!
Superfreak!
You're super-freaky!
Dah-dah-dah-dum!

Mighty Atomic Pikachu, Abby, and now you are regular posters at BadMovies, and those are just the ones we KNOW are femmes...I myself am a 250-pound female Tonga kickboxer--or am I a bi-curious guinea pig with a stoma this week? Parapalegic helper monkey of Claude Akins? No, AFLAC duck! That's it! I'm the AFLAC duck! AFLAC!!! AFF-FLAAAACCK!!!

I work in an insurance office, and our AFLAC rep brought in a toy duck that screams "AFLAC! AFLAC! AFFFFFLLLAAACCCC!!!" when squeezed.  Bet the hell out of the Snoopy doll the MetLife rep left me.

I now show the AFLAC duck to every other carrier rep and say, "Beat that."

The next day, the Reliance Standard rep FedExed me a slinky.

Have I mentioned how much I enjoy my life?

Nathan

A freak? Honey if you lived in Columbus, i'd  like to run my fingers through your video collection...uh..i mean that in a nice way. A taste for the weird is to be exaulted!...if nothing else,it shows a sense of humor, which we all need more of these days, and BTW,what is your favories line from MST3K? My current is from" Beginning of the end" as the Nat. Guard and Peter Graves  haul it from the Giant Grasshoppers , and Crow says,"One weekend a month my ass!"    Freak? Not no your life. Hoody Hoo!

I must say I laughed my ass off during the movie version at the part when somebody (not sure who) screamed "minty fresh!" as the pilot was turning green.  And btw, I am now the new proud owner of Plan 9 From Outer Space!

Now that I think about it, you're wondering whether or not you're a geek.

Yes, you are.

The very mention that you like roleplaying signifies that you are a geek.  Sorry, no escaping it.

So what you have to ask yourself is how much you like this culture you've submersed yourself in.

Seems you do, seeing as you've asked the question in a forum such as this.

I really enjoy this subculture.  I don't live in it.  But I used to be a permanent fixture in it.  This culture is like any other.  Doesn't matter how many converts you get, it's always there.

Who cares?  The only place these subcultures seem important is in an high school enviroment.  I learned long ago it was useless trying to proclaim why you like something so much to somebody who didn't appreciate it.  Everybody finds their entertainment somewhere or another.  Me, I find my roomates fascination with the latest blockbuster action movie sickening.  And on the same token, he can't understand why I like DEAD ALIVE so much.

So you're not a freak in the objective sense.  But I can withstand the cheesiest of horror movies, while I hate these poorly thought out action extravanganzas.  Don't worry about it.  When you grow older, you will find people who have the same interests as you.

Look at this site.  The guy who runs it is in the Marines.  The Marines!  I'd imagine the people you hang out with (don't let me stereotype) would never be the type of people to join any type of armed service, ever.  Hell, if you'd asked me in high school, I would expect anybody in the marines to love FULL METAL JACKET and that was it.

So, don't worry about where you find your entertainment.  It's your taste, follow it.

There are six billion people in this world.  No matter what, you're going to end up finding people who share the same interests as you, and you're going to end up having meaningful conversations with them.

Hell, look at this post.

I gotta say, I enjoy the little essays some of these letters/posts become -- very astute analysis there, bucko -- I mean, Mofo R.
PS:  Huh?  When did we all "know" Mighty Atomic Picachu is a member of the superior sex?  I missed that . . .but then, I miss so much . ..

Well Peter, at the beginning of the game you have to go in one restroom or the other and that determines what sex you are.  If you don't go and try to hold it then the game eventually makes you run in the men's room for relief.

Actually Pika has been around for a while, it probably popped up at some point here on the bbs.

Sorry, I tend to ramble when I'm drunk.  What I need is my own personal Mr. T to jump in yelling "Fool!  What's this jibba-jabba?"

Oh, yeah, when MAP dropped the clue, posters started hitting on her left and right. It was a wee bit ago. AFF-LAAAAACK!

That's ok, you were actually making sense, and your post was probably the biggest reason I asked this question in the first place.  People discussing stuff like that is GOOD, and there's nothing in the world like getting a bunch of geeks/freaks/drunks together and letting them ramble. And I hear they have Mr. T's for rent at your friendly neighborhood slave trade if you're really in need.  I have one myself, they're very affordable.
