Caged Women (1984)

A.K.A. VIOLENCE IN A WOMEN'S PRISON

CAGED WOMEN reminds us of what can happen when you have a movie with great direction, brilliant acting, and witty scripting; you can end up watching a movie that is not CAGED WOMEN.

CAGED WOMEN from the outset is slow paced. It takes a while to get going, but this could well be due to it trying to figure out where it is going. Of course, sloppiness in the production does not help it's case. It's continually cliched storyline adds nothing new either.

CAGED WOMEN is the story of Emmanuelle (Laura Gemser) who secretly gets herself put in prison to expose (careful) corruption and cruelty within the prison system. Certainly not an original idea, and not well executed in this movie.

CAGED WOMEN does have it's doses of lesbian scenes, beatings, sadistic guards, and the usual fare we are used to seeing in WIP flicks. It unfortunately overuses elements such as fights and baton beatings. The baton beating scenes become funny and then annoying with the overuse of the obviously fake batons. The dubbing is particularly bad and even one of the male prisoners (the prison b***h) sounds like he was dubbed by a voice from RUDOLPH THE RED NOSE REINDEER.

It is a disappointment that they did not have a scene where the prisoners set up the guards with a trap filled with Jell-o. After all, wouldn't that be called 'gel bait' (careful, not too many words at once).

With it's mostly poor production values, CAGED WOMEN seemed longer than it's 97 minute runtime. This was directed by Bruno Mattei. It is available on DVD under it's alternative title VIOLENCE IN A WOMEN'S PRISON.
