Title: Most Over-rated Movie Moment
Post by: Jack Corbett on February 09, 2005, 04:25:45 AM
I already have one (see the "Zombie's eyeball scene: not gory" thread. What are some "great" movie moment that you heard about but were only disappointed about upon viewing? I have yet to have one. (Trust me.)

I don't find the Zombie eyeball moment over-rated. Just not gory. Flinch worthy.

"I'm king of the world and it's fun! Ha ha ha!"

Well, as one reviewer says, it is rather fun to watch all of those narcissists (and Leonardo Dicaprio) bite the big one in Titanic, but that's not the part they hyped in all the previews.

That's easy...... whenever Freddie Prinze Jr's name is above the title of the film!!!

And this phenomenon can be shared with the following:

a) Ben Affleck
b) Brittany Murphy
c) Kate Hudson
d) Katie Holmes
e) ---any rapper magically turned into film star..
f) Vin Diesel

Jack

Since you are so obsessed with the splinter in the eye scene from ZOMBIE, I recommend that you adopt the screen name Splinter.

Of course, I did have an advantage when I first saw the movie ZOMBIE; being that I saw it on a large drive-in screen. It looks much better that way than downloading and viewing the scene on a computer. I would at least recommend watching the movie on a TV screen, preferably from a DVD, but a VHS copy is fine too.

Definitely the car chase scene in The French Connection, I didn't even realize it had occurred until the credits rolled. Ugh.

You've got to be kidding.

Badass Yoda fighting Dracula in "Attack Of The Clones Who Don't Really Attack Until The Next Movie". I can understand why it's overrated, I WANTED it to be cool so much that I didn't realize it wasn't until several days later. It was like one of those cartoon fights where they sort of merge together into a whirlwind with fists and stars flying out of it.

I kid you not Menard.

The entire reason for watching the film was to see the car chase sequence and it was boring. I am not alone on this, I am sure.

That is a lot of movie to watch for one car chase sequence. It is a classic film, and I could think of a lot of reasons to watch it that do not involve a car chase sequence.

You are correct. If your only reason for watching it was for the car chase sequence, then you were probably disappointed. You may want to stick with a movie about car chases, like VANISHING POINT, rather than one that just contains a car chase sequence.

"In all the gin joints in all the world, she had to walk into here." Everybody gets the line wrong and when you finally see it, it doesn't live up to the hype. Great movie, but it is odd that a scene that weak is so well loved.

"To Live and Die in LA"

Best...car chase scene...ever.

Never saw that one. I'll have to check it out.

Ever seen the parking garage chase scene in THE STAR CHAMBER?

Steve McQueen's Mustang in "Bullitt" set the pure carchase scene standard for decades.  So many moments from that were copied into so many later films.

Aaaiiieee!!  I know I've said before that this board shares all tastes, but . . . BUT! . . .Cripes, I just watched "Casablanca" again for the umpty-umpth time, and really love the entire script.  "Of all the gin joints in all the world, she had to walk into MINE" has power only if you let yourself feel the man's deep sorrow and soul-crushing pain -- in itself, no, it's not a particularly great line, but taken in context with all the other lines, it does become great.
Round up the usual suspects . . .
* * * *
Obvious statement of the Board Award:
Some films/nay, all films, if they're really cinematic, need to be seen on the BIG SCREEN.  This even applies to "Robot Monster".  You miss so much nuance on tiny screens, and I'm counting plasma home-theatre whatnots in this as well.  Size matters.  Even a film like Some Like It Hot, which you wouldn't think that would apply to, increases dramatically in quality when viewed on a 20 by 30 foot format.  Thank God Above that there are still places where I live where you can go to see this.  You NEED that Zombie Splinter to be 4ft. long, minimum!!

Over rated moment?  Just about anything my friends would go on and on and on about before I saw it.  Nothing can survive that kind of hype.  It takes a gift to tell someone juuuussst enough of a certain scene to get their pulse going, but not enough to ruin it.  Let there be some surprise.

The lightsaber fights in Episode 1,  I remember my brother saing it was the coolest thign he ever saw in 1999, I was pretty dissapointed and it wasn't that cool, all flash.

American History X concrete scene, I heard it was the most distrubing thing ever, they should have put in a little bit more for my imagination, it's a little too suggestive for me.

Guy getting shot in car in Pulp Fiction, soem so-called movie buffs I know say it was the most hilarious thing ever.

The car moment in Pulp Fiction is hilarious. Thats also coming from a guy that laughed his head off in Braindead's  lawnmower scene, thinking it was the best thing I had ever seen.

Yep.  It's pretty cool for realism.  I love that whole sequence, with the cop's one-liners and all.

I'll be the third person to mention the Yoda light sabre fight in Star Wars episode 1.  The whole movie is CGI, so I reasoned that for fans to get so excited about that fight, it must be extraordinary CGI!

But, um...no.

I completely agree on the Yoda scene. I mean no offense but a little elf jumping around for 30 seconds before they start throwing stuff at each other is lame. Give me Darth Maul any day.
