Dolph "Primitiveness" Lundgren as director??? LOL

What kind of crude plot might this sorry effort have?

Ok, I am sure, without knowing nothing about this plan, if such a movie comes out, the probability of the opponents will be like that:

Enemy:...........................Probability:
North-Koreans.............40%
Iraqies............................30%
Vietnamese..................15%
Soviets...........................15%
others..............................10%

Your scale is based on 110%? : )

Ups...

well, forget about the "others"-category, then we have 100%.
(who could these others be? Chinese? Columbians? The French...he he?)

Let´s do this with "ideology/religion":

Islamists....................50%
Communists.............40%
others
(Triads, Mafia,
Camorra, etc)...........10%

They haven´t started yet with the production because of a discussion about the most important point in the movie:
whether it should contain more explosions or gun-fights...

s**t, this movie really exists!!!

"The Defender" - Dolph as director, I can´t believe it... (The opponents are Islamists)

I just saw one of Lundgren's latest films, "Retrograde" (2004), and can't believe how crude and cheap it is. I mean, even when Lundgren has finally landed in the DVD zone, he has made decent films now and then. If you are into B-movies, both "The Peacekeeper" (1997) and "Jill Rips" (2000) have their moments, and "Silent Trigger" is even pretty good, if you can ignore the hideous script.

But this one was just the worst he could ever do. He plays the head of some commandos from the future (!) that have to travel to the XXI th Century to stop the source of the plague that has decimated mankind. You can't even imagine how horrid and boring it is... the sets are pathetic, Dolph is forced to wear a uniform that seems taken from a paint-ball competition, the pace is the dullest possible... even when we are subjected to action scenes (fist-fights or shootouts), it is so poorly staged and so unconvincing that it makes you long for any other thing.

And Dolph is aging very badly. You can see grey hair on his temples, and his movements, which never have been anything special (guess he could have learned some kun-fu, after all these years in the genre), are so badly coreographed that it seems miraculous he can hit anybody.

Unless he produces something decent soon, I wouldn't be surprised if the end of his career comes sooner or later.

According to IMDB Dolph is a 2nd or 3rd degree black belt in Karate and won some championship back in the 80's. Of course that doesnt make his movie fights look any better : )

I'm not saying Dolph would be convincing at this, but older dudes of his body type, when they start to get grey, often make pretty good Colonels and Generals.  I don't know, you think he could pull off 'thinking man's strategist'??

Don't think so. He doesn't look THAT old. Just too old to play the commando-type he usually plays. And his looks doesn't exactly distil intellect, do they?

I also heard he has a law degree from some university in Denmark, so I guess it doesn't make his decisions or acting look any better.

He such a natural bad guy, he's awesome at it.   They should make a movie with him as a wizened old Spetsnaz officer working for the Russian mafia and he'd absolutely kick butt.   But he's always the good guy.  Good guy parts just don't fit him.

I thought that Dolph Lundgren was supposed to be hanging up his action boots, but since Van Damme is nearly gone from films(his upcoming "Kumite" is heavily rumored to be his very last film),Don "The Dragon" Wilson is heavily busy playing Dad to his second baby son,and Steven Seagal has seven DTV movies coming to DVD in the next few months,Dolph probably decided to resume his career, and add the fading Springer as an addition to get those DTV rental grosses going(once this comes out on DVD).

Jesus. The low budget action arena seems in dire straits, if all that you mention is true. Personally, I found Seagal's and Van Damme last efforts far more entertaining than their "A" movies. Of course, I'm pretty weird myself when it comes to action movies.

Yes,he is a black belt and the law degree is true also.Just got to point out that he's swedish and I've acctually met him briefly in an airport in San Antonio -96. About the earlier comment about someone wishing him to be a spetsnaz or whatever,he did a movie called red scorpion where he's an elite rusian soldier kinda guy and I think (I'm not sure) the bad guys are Americans...now thats original...name one other movie where the Americans are the bad guys....I mean like a war movie...where the hero of the flick...is on the other side.....hmm....I can't think of any...help me out.

From IMDB :

"A Russian KGB agent is sent to Africa to kill an anti-Communist black revolutionary. However, he has a change of heart when he sees how the Russians and their Cuban allies are killing and repressing the locals, so he switches sides and helps the rebels."

No Americans, just Russians and Cubans. They must have been trying to capitalize on his Rocky IV fame. I remember loving this movie when I was a kid, but I havent seen it in years.

I read he had done a movie with John Woo,but I've never heard of it before. Anyone knows about this? And if so...is it any good?

"Islamists....................50%

Nah, you're way off.  Nobody's afraid of communists anymore (at least not in America).  The North Koreans will have to launch a nuke at Japan before the average American starts to care, Castro has been reduced to a Seinfeld skit, and the Chinese haven't been true communists since Mao died.  It'll look like this:

Islamists...............70% (sign of the times)
Neo-Nazis...........25% (the bad guys everyone in Hollywood can agree)
Drug Cartel..........5%   (overdone in the 80s and 90s, but Lundgren may go there)

I think it would be funny if Dolph Lundgren turned out to be a really brilliant director and after this start was accepting an Oscar for something poignant in a few years.

"But he's always the good guy."

You're right.  He was bad in Universal Soldier and Rocky IV -- his two best roles to date.

God, I love 80's action movies.  Van Damme used to be the master of the asskicking universe.  Dolph made movies like The Punisher and Dark Angel (I Come In Peace for all you Americans).  Oodles of bad ninja movies.  Thank the lord for DVD.  Revenge of the Ninja is now out!!!

Probably you mean "Blackjack". It is pretty bad for a John Woo film, but it is action packed and lots of fun. Among the best recent Lundgren films.

Speaking of which...I just saw a scene from a Wu-tung Kung fu movies..the one with a guy fights a Baloon with eyes(?) and it's supposed to be a scary monster of some sort....and then someone makes a really bad voice over for the baloon  monster...it's so terrible....picture yourself a kung fu artist making round house kicks to a big fat baloon on a wire that speaks and sais "ow!"...pure quality movie making.

Reading all the people that hadn't heard about this film before makes me realize how few have actually read my B-WARE article (http://www.schlocktoberfest.com/current_columns/foy_current.html) I put together back in January. Sometimes I wonder why I bother. Sigh.
