Title: What film with a leprechaun is this?
Post by: MikeA on May 11, 2005, 01:31:29 PM

And no, it's not one of the Leprechaun horror films (what are they up now, like seven or so?)

Anyway this film I'm thinking of is from early seventies maybe... I only saw a few bits and pieces of it when it was on regular tv years back.  From what I remember, I think the film was basically about this greedy old guy who (I assume) saves the life of a leprechaun and thus, the wee person has to grant the guy's wishes.

The leprechaun (as usual) is a tricky sort and he doesn't grant the old man's first two wishes quite the way the guy would like, frustrating his attempts at becoming rich (I assume away... I only caught the last few minutes of the show.)

The climax of the film occurs when the Banshee (who's appearance always fortells a death) comes for the old man's gravely ill daughter.  Even with his powers, the leprechaun can not send the Banshee away.  So, in a moment of redemption, the old man uses his third wish to have the Banshee take him instead.  He and the leprechaun step inside the banshee's coach and then the leprechaun tricks the old man into using up his FOURTH wish (which the old guy didn't even know he had) to have the Bnashee take HIM away instead of the old man.

Thus, the movie ends happily with the old man realizing there's more important things in life than anyway.

If anyone could tell me the title of this, I'd appreciate it.  (I hate having a movie in my head without knowing what it is...)

Well, Darby O'Gill and the Little People had some wish themes going.  Maybe this?

Definitely Darby O'Gill and the Little People -- which starred a very young Sean Connery.  It was from the late 50s I think.  I remember it because it was on HBO the first month we had it when I was a kid.
