Title: Greatest "Ordinary" Movie Quote
Post by: AndyC on June 05, 2005, 09:43:40 AM
We've had a few discussions about great movie quotes, usually full of the sorts of lines that are meant to be quoted. Clever stuff.

However, there are often lines that, while not particularly special, stick with us due to exceptional delivery, timing, or just being unusual yet appropriate.

Think of Kurtwood Smith in Robocop: "b***hes leave."

Or that great line from Carpenter's The Thing: "You've gotta be f**king kidding."

Other examples?

There are quite a few quotes that pop up in my everyday speech. They're not especially memorable or clever, they just found their way into my lexicon and won't go away. Examples include:

"F_ck you! Pay me!!" ---GoodFellas.

"Charlie don't surf!!"----Apocolypse Now.

"Must Make Pee Pee" -----Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigalo (the only bit I remember from the whole movie!)

"Let's Do Some Good" ----The Untouchables. ( I started the tradition of uttering this little gem at division roll call, about a year ago. Now, at least once a week some knucklehead says it to hails of derisive laughter. Why this line is a source of ironic laughter to police officers is no mystery to me, but I hope it is to the taxpayer!)

"I'm Perfectly OK, you f_cking idiot"----- The Rock (must be said using bad Sean Connery voice)

People that know me often have a difficult time with me because they mostly agree that I'm annoying for various reasons (f 'em if they can't take a joke). One of the more popular reasons is because during conversations I will often just come out with some fitting quote that pops into mind and I guess it must be aggravating (don't know why). However, it's probably more that I will often just pop a quote out for no reason at all, just for reactions.
I enjoy yelling "This is Ceti-Alpha 5!" from the Wrath of Kahn just because I can.
I also enjoy saying "Greetings from the Humungus. The Lord Humungus. The Warrior of the Wasteland. The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla!"
Sometimes I do use quotes that fit but overall my favorites that I keep tucked away for continuous use come from Mad Max and Road Warrior and are listed on the other thread about quotes.
I suppose it gets old for people after awhile but as I tell my wife: ask me if it bothers me.
Some good ones that aren't related to Max in any way:

We're gonna need a bigger boat.

I used to hate the water...

We're ready to believe you! (I love this one because of my "hobby")

Your clothes...give them to me...now.

You are part of the Rebel Alliance and a traitor! Take her away! (my little girl has fun with this when I say it to her)

You don't know the power of the Dark Side.

Saw part of "Heavenly Creatures" and Kate Winslet said something I can't quite remember about someone teaching her how to knit. I think the lady she was talking about had a funny name, and she acted REALLY excited about it. Something about the way she said that line had me rolling on the floor, I was going to try to memorize that line.

Yet again from "Blood Feast"

"Looks this is gonna be one of those loooooong hard ones."

that cracks me up!!! WHO I ask you who would deliver that line in that manner? Then again, who would write it? So many things wrong..... so many things.

I'm not sure why, but the line that popped into my head when I read this was from My Fair Lady. When Alfred (Eliza Doolittle's father) goes to see her, only to find she has moved out of her apartment to go live in Professor Higgins's house, one of the ladies telling him about it adds something to the effect of "And she didn't want no clothes!" The way she emphasizes the "th" in "clothes" has me giggling every time I think about it. Okay, not every time; that would be sad and creepy. Every other time. Yeah, that's better, and only half as creepy.

In Tae Kwon Do, when you compete in a certain style, there is a protocol for introducing yourself to the judges.  It's basically

"Judges....my name is [name],  my form is [form name"

I keep wanting to substitute that with the Montoya's line about "you killed my father..."

Take care,
Jay

I can't believe I forgot this one! I was just looking at the Conspiracy Movie thread and Trek brought up the drill scene in Marathon Man.

"Is it safe?"

I use that all the time. Great line and I'm p**sed at myself for overlooking it.

The long spiel about Dicks, a***oles, and Pussies from the "Team America" flick is great.  I'm pretty sure it's not original to that movie, but it certainly rings true.

I just watched that last night. I'm pretty low brow so when that conversation came up in the bar followed by the vomiting scene I laughed so hard for so long my stomach hurt.

Thanks to the Clerks animated series I use that all the time as well. I wasn't aware it comes from Marathon Man. Another mystery in my life solved.

Bringing up Clerks (the movie)...
I remember one line from that movie that used to crack me up and I used it all the time when I was an auto-mechanic:

"This job would be great if it wasn't for the customers."

Just thought of a really great line from the Simpsons, and it is such a minor joke. It was the episode with the bible stories, when Homer works the unicorn to death and God/Flanders says "My unicorn! Aw, Gary, what've they done to ya?"

It's supposed to be a joke, obviously, but it's so subtle. I just find it really clever. I mean, they've given a magical animal a really ordinary name, but just uncommon enough to be weird. Call him Bill or Joe and it would be a ho-hum joke, but the way it was done just leaves you going "Gary?" I love that line.

Anytime James Coburn uses "God damn" in a film. He got a lot of milage out of that word.

"37!" - Randall in Clerks

"Everything I ever told you is a lie! Including that." - Bedazzled (1967)

"Right on the button!"
"So long Scarface."
"Look at me, Joe College with a touch of bursitis" - all from "Sabrina" (1953)

"It'll never work. Any actor who could play the part would get better offers." - Castle Keep

"Well, nobody likes to leave home, Jim. "
" You listen! It's no worse than a bad cold!"
"I always feel silly on one of these things." - all from Pocket Money

"And I'll tell you that was for Albert!!!" - The Shootist. Actually I have tons of Richard Boone lines I love and try to use for no good reason.

"f**k off, I'm beautiful." - Sexy Beast

"Well, smile you stupid bastards. We won, didn't we." - The Italian Job (1969)

"Never play 'Lady of Spain' again!"
"Yeah, well, you're a goalie, you're supposed to be like that."
"All I can get."
"Why don't you call a massage parlor?" - and about a thousand more from Slap Shot.

"Boys, last month it was a sheep. And it was still warm. When am I gonna get some cash money?"
"Hell, make it $400 and throw yourself in there too!"
"I used to sell hot combs on the TV."
"We thought you boys'd like to know what poor planning felt like." - all from Rancho Deluxe

Guess I've been storing them up while I was away again.

That vomit scene was a scream!  They had the sounds down pat on that.  I can now go to my grave able to say I've seen a puppet puke!

Too bad I had just sat down with a plate of food while that was going on...

Does an Arthur Dent made of yarn puking up yarn count? Then "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" has a puking puppet as well. Not the same effect as in "Team America", but anyway.....

In countless movies, when they're beating someone up and "and this one's for yadda yadda... AND THIS LAST ONE IS FOR ME!" (person dies)

Actually this one is more annoying and predictable then orginary or great.

Yeesh.  Not meaning to hijack the quotes thread or anything, but I got to thinking, and I'm pretty sure there's puking puppets in "Meet The Feebles" and "Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story", too!

It's just...I mean...who'd have ever thought there'd be so many puking puppet movies out there!?!

"Rock and Roll has gone down hill ever since Buddy Holly died." - - Paul LeMat in AMERICAN GRAFFITI

"Leave the kid alone." - - Tony Ganios in THE WANDERERS

"Why don't you try sticking your head up your ass.  See if it fits." - - Al Pacino in SCARFACE

"Go get your fu**ing shine box." - - Frank Vincent in GOODFELLAS

Title: The Longest Yard (original)
Post by: AndyC on June 23, 2005, 11:40:33 AM
Just remembered this one. The original Longest Yard is an old favourite of mine, and the ads for the remake brought this to mind.

It's when Paul and Caretaker are talking by the fence, and Unger, the creepy little snitch, asks to be manager of the team. Caretaker tells him to get lost and Unger says "F**k off."

Those two words were so full of venom. Unger was just sort of a creepy little loser up to that point, but out of nowhere comes this line that pulls back the cowardly, weasely exterior and shows us the violently disturbed individual underneath. Then he's immediately back to sucking up. Just insane.

Unger had another line earlier in that scene that was filled with subtle menace: "I really want people to like me **but they never do**

Unger was a great character. Just so utterly repulsive. Haven't seen the remake, so I don't know how the character was handled. I know his equivalent in the British remake, Mean Machine, was pretty crappy.

Good call on Unger, AndyC. I was watching the original "The Longest Yard" on DVD the other day, and that scnen with Unger jumped out at me. I've seen the film so many times on TV, edited to pieces, but rarely uncut, so I forgot that line was in there. You really do get a glimpse of what Unger is really like with one line.

That line is usually gone from TV versions altogether, and the version Viacom airs now on their channels like CMT and Spike is even worse, it's cut to fit a two hour block including commericals. Used to it would air in a 2 1/2 hour block on TBS, TNT and such. So not only is that line gone but the scenes of the recruitment of guys like Sonny and Indian are cut (too un-PC I guess). Also some of the "swamp reclaimation" scenes where the other prisoners contempt and razing of Crewe are shown. The guy doing inverted pushups and flicking the dirt on his hands into Crewe's food is gone.

You're right about the Brit remake's version of Unger as well. They made him an over the top stuttering, drooling, twitchy combo of Igor, Quasimodo, and Richard III. He was so repugnant even from a distance that you wondered why anyone would say or do anything within earshot or line of sight of him. In the original he was bland, meek, and nonscript looking enough on the outside for others to dismiss him, serving his purposes. In the Brit remake, he actively drove people away.

Ok, I cheated...the answer is....
