Title: They Came to Cordura (1959)
Post by: Scott on July 13, 2005, 08:44:30 PM
THEY CAME TO CORDURA (1959) Good film starring Gary Cooper, Rita Hayworth, Van Heflin, Tab Hunter, and Dick York. The story takes place in 1916 when Pancho Villa came across the border and killed Americans in New Mexico. The film follows Gary Cooper as he is looking for some Medal Of Honor canidates as the goverment needs some poster boys for the up coming WWI conflict in Europe. During the film we are told Cooper is the son of a general and during a battle Cooper instintively jumped into a ditch during the chaos as he hadn't been in battle before and was labeled a coward, so he's given a postition of Major because he is the son of a General to find soldiers worthy of the Medal of Honor and also spends the whole film bringing these 4 soldiers from a recent cavalry charge across the border(last of the cavalry charges) in his search for the element of courage in his canidates he witnessed in action and is bringing back to safety for goverment reasons. During the hard ride back Cooper interviews each of the 4 and finds them to all be of the worst types. I liked the film and found it interesting. Some great location shots also. Could have been better I suppose, but I found the story and locations interesting. This color film falls under the Western genre.

Saw it years ago on TV, with my dad who mentioned the last cavalry charge aspect. Plus I think he knew I had a growing interest in anything connected with late 19th century/early 20th century weapons and the changing of the times in warfare, politics, etc. I should porbably see it again since I remember so little of it, plus I never was much of a Gary Cooper fan.

I'v e seen it as well. A couple of points. Based upon the novel by Glendon Swarthout. It is another of those cases, where the "unhappy" ending of the book, is changet to a "happy" ending for the film. And Dick York, who appears in the film, suffered, until the day he died, from back problems. Which back problems he received in an accident, while working on this film.
