Title: Wendigo (2001)
Post by: trekgeezer on November 01, 2005, 11:15:22 AM
George (Jake Weber), Kim (Patricia Clarkson), son Miles (Eric Per Sullivan) are on their way to house in the country of upstate New York to enjoy a relaxing weekend and are instead traumatized when they hit a deer. They are soon confronted by the local redneck crew who have been tracking the deer (this you should know means trouble).

This movie is really about the inner workings of a childs mind. Eric Per Sullivan (Dewey from Malcolm in the Middle) does a stand out job as the troubled Miles. George and Kim wouldn't win any parent of the year awards, George is the distant father and Kim, who is obviously supposed to be a psychologist, doesn't have a clue about what's going on in Miles's mind.

The tone of the movie is rather brooding, and if you were like me as a child and had an active imagination, you can relate to the kid in this film. My father used to tell us stories about things like an unexplained creature in New England that walked over roofs and turned over head stones.  I used to look at the woods at sunset and really wonder about what could be out there.  Unlike Miles in the film, though, I never had harsh reality come crashing down on me.

Wendigo is a personal favorite of mine.

My wife and I rented it a few years back after my insisting, since I had read great reviews of the film.  I remember warning her numerous times before I put in the DVD that she should not expect a real horror film.

The overall feel of the film is quite "dreamish".  It's a very quiet film that has a strong feeling of doom until it's climax with the sled scene.  Everyone does an amazing job in the movie, and it wouldn't be good without the actors holding it up.

Slow, strong film that I highly recommend to anyone who hasn't seen it.

Same here.  The strength here is in the characters and their relationships, not in overt horror/gore.  The final scene still haunts me.  That is true horror.
