I did a lengthy assignment on his life in one of my history classes and concluded that what makes him 'great' is that he worked to stabilize a partially nomadic and barbaric tribe and create an organized society that his people would respect. My last name is a variation of Theodoric who is (or was) a Germanic hero as you mentioned, so I've read alot of his history about 8 years ago. It seems that people back 500 years ago liked to name themselves after heros.
