Title: what is the best zombie movie in anybody's opinion.
Post by: ssvegita on January 07, 2002, 09:09:15 PM
title explains it. Just tell me 2 or 3 really good ones, thanks.

Title: The Best Zombie Movies, in My Opinion, Are....
Post by: Cullen on January 07, 2002, 10:07:33 PM
....Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Dead Alive (Braindead).

Special mention goes to Shockwave, which starred Peter Cushing.  It really isn't that great, but the ending tickles me for some reason.

Also, there's Night of the Creeps, which every now and again I like.  If I can get a copy with the original ending, I'd be a bit happier.

One qualifier: I haven't seen every zombie movie made.  Two other potentially good zombie  movies are "Day of the Dead" and "I Walked with a Zombie."

hmmm, that's easy, Dead Alive.
what other movie includes bodily dismemberment by a lawn mower, a likable(yet slighty dorky) hero, and a priest doing kung fu. none, that's how many!

Braindead, NOTLD Trilogy, Return Of The Living Dead Trilogy, Evil Dead Trilogy

hmmm, soon to be: Peter Jacksons World War 1 Zombie Film :)

Dead Alive is definitely a hoot, Dawn of the Dead has a nice post-apocalyptic flavour to it, and Return of the Living Dead has tongue-in-cheek humour and a certain nostalgic appeal. Those would be my three picks.

I'm not a big zombie expert or "afficionado" per se, but the ones that have scared me the most in my 47 years have been the original "Night of the Living Dead" and "The Last Man on Earth" with Vincent Price.  Saw those both at drive-ins as a kid and had to hide in the back seat of the car.  =:0

Top pick: Evil Dead 2. Runners-up: Night of the Living Dead (original), Return of the Living Dead (first one only), and Zombie just for the perfect puke factor.

One of my favorites would have to be Biozombie.

My favorite is Day of the Dead, in fact Romero's entire trilogy is a smart, consistent vision.

Tom Savini's disavowed remaked is an underrated little thriller, it's not classic, but  smartly written and solidly made nonetheless.

I'll second the Shock Waves nomination and Fulci's Zombie is dumb fun (how could you not love a movie were a zombie attacks a SHARK!)

Chadzilla's too modest to promote himself (I'm not), but don't miss his reviews of DAY OF THE DEAD and ZOMBIE over at Scifilm.

I like all the ones mentioned, and also Horror Express (with Telly Savalas, Cushing, and Lee) and my all-time favorite film of any genre, Cemetery Man.

Post by: Darkstar on January 08, 2002, 03:46:51 PM
I'd have to go with Bio Zombie, it's sort of a cross between Clerks and Dawn of the Dead with a bit of House of the Dead (VG) thrown in.

Title: How Could I Forget...
Post by: Cullen on January 08, 2002, 04:47:55 PM
...Horror Express!  Gah!  That deserves more of a place on my list than "Shock Wave!"  (Although, is it really a zombie movie if the zombies only appear at the end?)

Missing "Cemetery Man" isn't as bad.  I liked the film, but I wouldn't have called it one of the best.

I also would like to add "Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things", which, again, I like as much for the ending as anything else, and the zombie "Night Life” with Scott Grimes and Gomez Addams (or John Astin, whichever, whatever).  NL has a very special place in my heart for whatever reasons, and, with "John Carpenter's The Thing,” is one of the few films I can watch over and over and over again.

Speaking of John Carpenter, does "The Fog" count a zombie movie or a ghost story or both?

Title: ***Avoid at all costs***

Children of the Living dead - It does have Tom Savini, but thats the only good thing about it.

Zombie 3 (aka nights of terror) - This is horrible, saying that I've only seen the uk release (cut down to 60 mins). Although the weird kid in it is funny "Mama, this cloth smells of death"

I actually like Burial Ground its goofy and strange with that 30 year old breast eating kid but the zombies at least look cool and at least it didn't put me to sleep.

My recommendations: Romero's series, Return of the livng dead, Let sleeping corpses lie, children shouldn't play wth dead things, brain dead, Junk, wild zero, dellamorte dellamore, Premutos (quite possibly the goriest film ever made with a body count of 139, quite a bit of zombies), re-animator and many others. My zombie related newsgroup made a best and worst list awhile back with a vote system. I'll post it if you want, there are some really awful ones on the worst list.

Post by: Neville on January 09, 2002, 07:12:25 AM
I like Dawn of the Dead, but I prefer less gory things. These are zombie films as well:

1) Both JC's "The fog" (somebody mentioned it before) and "Prince of darkness"
Well, "Starman" also features a zombie, but I don't like it.

2) Bride of Reanimator. I had huge fun with this movie, but I can't say why. Haerd that Yuzna is about to do "Beyond Reanimator", another sequel to the original.

Title: Prince of Darkness...
Post by: Cullen on January 09, 2002, 10:26:08 AM
...is a good choice, but I wound't have thought of it as a zombie movie.  Zombies are more individuals (well, kinda), while the possessed people in "PoD" were more part of a single intelligence.

I know.  I'm splitting hairs.  I'll stop now.

Title: Re: Prince of Darkness...
Post by: AndyC on January 09, 2002, 12:56:25 PM
There is also a question of whether a living person in a trance or acting under some external control counts as a zombie. I would have thought the term applied only to a reanimated corpse.

Title: Re: These are zombie films as well...
Post by: AndyC on January 09, 2002, 01:01:17 PM
While we are considering the definition of a zombie, would Frankenstein's monster be included? That would open up a whole other set of movies, but I'm of two minds as to whether the zombie label fits.

For a totally diferent zombie movie try The Serpent and the Rainbow, Wes Craven  best movie to date.

"Night of the Comet"  When the world gets vaporized, shoes with red sand are prevalent, making for some unsettling scenes. Mall free-for-alls and battles with neighborhood zombies makes this movie enjoyable.

Title: Re: Overlooked controlled walking dead
Post by: Chadzilla on January 09, 2002, 05:58:35 PM
If an outside intelligence reanimating corpses and making them walk around qualifies as a zombie movie then I'm throwing in Plan 9 from Outer Space!  Not necessarily a 'good' zombie movie, but an interesting one nonetheless.

Title: Definition of "Zombie"
Post by: Andrew on January 09, 2002, 07:21:56 PM
The older movies that deal with zombies are all about people, not necessarily dead, controlled by an often evil person.  If I had to pinpoint some movies that changed that then "I Eat Your Skin" (1964) and "Plague of the Zombies" (1966) probably were in there, but Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" (1968) put the nail in the coffin.

To see the "mindless thralls" movies you can watch "Revolt of the Zombies" (1936) or "I Walked with a Zombie" (1943).  Heck, "The Incredibly Strange Creatures that Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies" (1963) even fits here.

I have to say that my favorite zombie movies of all time are (in no particular order) George Romero's Dawn of the Dead(you've got to like a movie whose original working title was "Chopping Mall"), Dead Alive(Peter Jackson is my favorite Jackson), and of course Night of the Living Dad, beacuse without it, where would we all be(probably still living with our parents)?

It's a pity the real Chopping Mall is such a let down.

Blasphamy! And when i get my hands on that dvd that is being shipped via amazon and get some time next weekend (if i'm not working), i'll be posting a nice little mini-review with pics.

Because...

I LOVE bad movies. Whats not to love?

  • Sluts will survive any apocalyptic scenario (just not a slasher film)
  • The Teenage girls just happen to be handy with an oozie
  • And drive a motorcycle
  • And get top score on Asteroids
  • And fight off zombies
  • Its the end of the world, what do they do? Go to the Mall!
  • Zombies like to hang out at the mall, too
  • Government installations don't put much thought into ventilation systems

And arguably, it was rather greedy for the older sister not to share the last man on earth (well before the hunk drives up at the end). I mean, assuming they have to re-populate the planet, monogamy isn't really an option now is it? tsk tsk

Also I'd have to wonder if the food/plants were exposed. It would only be a matter of time...

Now it's not the best zombie film - but it is a b-movie among zombie films.

Title: Re: what is the best zombie movie in anybody's opinion.
Post by: Amanda on March 18, 2007, 07:58:03 PM
Night of the Comet was awesome.  I've seen that movie so many times, and lately it's been on one of the movie channels all the time, so I've been enjoying myself.

Susan, I too have thought about the plants and whatnot being exposed, but I guess we're not supposed to put that much thought into it.

Other fave zombie flicks...Dawn (both of them, actually), Dead Alive, Cemetery Man, Zombie (or Zombi 2, whatever).  I love zombies, they're my favorite genre.  I'm actually doing an College English research paper on the Evolution of Zombies in Entertainment.  hehe.

The original Dawn of the Dead, just because.
Night I shouldn't even have to mention.
Return of the Living Dead is great, plus it is so 80's.
I have a special place in my heart for Slither.

Night of the Living Dead
28 Days Later
Re-Animator

Those three cover all the bases, classic zombie, modern zombie, and zombie humor. Shaun of the Dead is very good, too, and special mention must be made of Fulci's twisted House by the Cemetary.

So, no, this ain't one of mine -- Best Zombies?  I don't even like Zombies as a genre -- Yeah, I like "Shaun" as a film - I guess, were I to actually give an opinion, I'd say "Invisible Invaders", because that's where George Romero STOLE all his "Zombiefication" stuff from.
So there . . .

My faves are

Dawn Of The Dead (the original)
Night Of The Living Dead (again with the original)
Horror Express
Shaun Of The Dead
Land Of The Dead
Shock Waves
Zombie (Lucio Fulci)

The only thing that I don't like is that there's never been a South African zombie film. Now that would really be funny.  :teddyr:

I have a special place in my heart for Slither.

did you see slither? or just the trailer? this movie is about an alien life-form that comes to earth and proceeds to ingest all living things on this planet ultimatley wiping it clean of organic life. now, the alien or "Grant Grant" sticks these spiked phallus appendages into his victims stomachs emitting this substance that makes people eat and eat and eat ect. until they are the size of a house, and a house they are indeed. each person is a host to hundreds of slug like parasites that must enter through the mouth of an animal in order to take control of their body, and act as a security camera/supplier for the main alien(Grant Grant). i dont consider these people being controlled by an alien parasite's zombies, they are people controlled by alien parasites, period. if your going to consider this film a zombie film then why not consider "The Puppet Masters" or "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers"? no you wanna know why? cause they are movies about aliens taking over peoples bodies, not the undead rising from the grave. i dont think that a person being animated because of an intelligent host counts as a zombie.

Title: Re: what is the best zombie movie in anybody's opinion.
Post by: daveblackeye15 on March 19, 2007, 05:03:53 PM
I've always thought that the term zombies doesn't just mean the 'undead'. I call zombies not only the living dead but also people that are held under control or are used as hosts.

I don't want to start a debate since there was an epic one going on at IMDb.com on said subject.

Besides I said 'special place.'

My justification for calling 28 Days Later a zombie movie is the fact that George Romero also didn't call the creatures in NOTLD zombies either. They were "ghouls" if anything. The subhuman cannibalistic protohuman things in 28 Days Later may not be zombies according to the director, but anyone who's seen a few zombie flicks will and should immediately disagree with him. If I was a braindead automoton with the sole motivation to devour and destroy anything in my path without consciously deciding to, I'm a frickin' zombie.

I don't see anything wrong with calling something under mind control a zombie.

Though I do think calling the infected people in Slither, Jason, and Deadites 'zombies' are varying stretches.

I remember reading a Solomon Kane story where there were creatures that acted like zombies (slow, unthinking, feared fire) and yet they were called vampires. It really is kind of blurry as to what you could call a zombie. I mean Vampires are a type of undead creature, so are Mummies.

Title: Re: what is the best zombie movie in anybody's opinion.
Post by: Joe on March 20, 2007, 03:14:30 PM
well im not really saying "Mind control" i dont mean hypnotized, i mean a physical host going inside of a body and controlling it from the inside. i understand they are all "types" but a zombie is a zombie a mummy is a mummy and and a vampire is a vampire. though vampire can be a number of different things according to the occult but im not gonna go there.

"Night of the Living Dead" (original black and white version) is the greatest of them all, a definite masterpiece.  After that it's a pretty close call.  I like "Dawn of the Dead," and Fulci's "Zombie."  There's also "Dead Alive," and "28 Days Later."

top 4 no question:
Dawn of the Dead
Dawn of the Dead (remake)
Resident Evil (perhaps the best overall)
Shaun of the Dead.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, hands down.

I have to agree with many others on Night of the Creeps, mainly because of its dark humor, excellent effects work and the simple fact that it's the only zombie flick I know of so far that starts with a pudgy alien gunfight sequence. Classic. I can't pick any single "of the Dead" title but Return of the Living Dead and the original Dawn of the Dead are up there.

Shaun of the dead was ok, , but I don't see it as top of the heap. The NOTLD series are great, as are a couple of the Return of the Living Dead movies. I still have to say Braindead (Dead Alive) has to be on the top or VERY near it.

Even though I think NOTLD is the best by far, I couldn't leave it at that.  This genre's just too rich.  I would also nominate these as top-notch:

DAWN OF THE DEAD (almost as good as NIGHT)
WHITE ZOMBIE
DEAD-ALIVE
CEMETARY MAN
RE-ANIMATOR
RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD (but not the sequels)
Shoot, EVIL DEAD & EVIL DEAD 2, if they count
The zomcom FIDO wasn't in this class, but I just saw it and I'd recommend it to fans who haven't seen it.

Ones I haven't seen but mean to:
28 DAYS LATER (& sequel if I like the first)
CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS
LAND OF THE DEAD, DIARY OF THE DEAD
SHAUN OF THE DEAD
NIGHT OF THE COMET
HORROR EXPRESS

I'll also nominate Night of the Creeps for one simple reason, the best line in any zombie movie...

Sounds like the typical answer, but my vote is for NOTLD.  It is without doubt the best zombie film ever made any way one looks at it - historically, cinematically, etc.  It's tops.

Runners up are its step chidren: Dawn of the Dead ('78) and Return of the Living Dead ('84).
