Title: OT: Care and feeding of the new Phorum
Post by: Ed, Ego and Superego on December 02, 2005, 01:12:57 AM
I thought I would start a "How To" thread for those of us too silly, stupid, or lazy to sit and click through all the options to figure it out (I just got home from work and brain hurts).  So here is my question:
Is it possible to flip back to the "flat" view?  I actually like it as it saves clicks and I can read right through (I guess I'm in the lazy category).

Thanks smarter folks. And sorry if this is tampering in God's (or moderator's) domain.

My Control Center -> Forum Settings, then set Thread Override - Read to "View Flat."

Really, it's fairly easy to get this forum set up and learn what it can do. Just use the selections at the top and take 5 minutes to go through them. That's what I did and things are going smoothly here.

The site seems very slow today like it's bogged down. Could be my service at work, I guess.

Anyone else notice?

It's no slower than other sites here.  Sometimes they are real slow, sometimes it is just a few websites that are slow.

Hey, has anyone tried searching the archives?  Since the switch, It seems that I am not seeing everything I remember was there when I do a search.  Any Ideas would be helpful.

Ed, I doubt you have overlooked it but be sure you select "all dates" if you're searching for something old. Other than that, I haven't had any problems with it.

Well, you doubted wrong.   I am usually quite technically savvy, but something about this interface really gives me a blind spot.  Thanks Odinn!

You'll get used to it. Just spend a few minutes going through the menu on "My Control Center" and you'll have it in no time.

Just a quick question: for the last few days, during the day here [I guess it's sometime at night for you guys: it's 2:10am here for instance as I write this] I've found that I can't access the phorum due to some sort of problem [I get an error message which says something about maximum users reached or something]  Just thought I'd ask about it, since I'm not sure exactly what the deal is.

I'm assuming that whilst things are getting upgraded/moved around that the site is just down while this is happening, but I was just wondering why it happens if that's not the case?  Anyway, that's all for now.

Well Dean, it appears that Andrew is limiting access to fans of Gigli.

I told you it was a conspiracy to shut us up!!!

Or maybe the 'maximum users reached' is a sign of how so many Gigli fans have flooded to the site and have just clogged up the works.  Well at least that's the dream...

It appears that the site is starting to slow down to a crawl again.  (1-10-06)

Anyone else noticing this too?

Haven't had any problems with it in weeks.

So when posting a link, I just paste the URL, is this a "correct" way to do it?  Most other folks just put a "Here" or "Article" link that contains the URL.  So what is the right way?

That's fine.  But if you want the fancier way, use the url bbs tag:

For example, to put the url to www.badmovies.org,

{url=http://www.badmovies.org}The Best Bad Movies Site on the Net{/url}

Change the { to [ and the } to } and that in your post will produces this link:

The Best Bad Movies Site on the Net (http://www.badmovies.org)

One hint though: whenever using bbs tags like the url one, use the Preview button before you Post.
