Title: For christmas
Post by: Susan on December 29, 2005, 03:27:51 PM
I've been out of town for Christmas and just got back, although I have alot of reading here to catch up on you can imagine why I haven't been posting. My Christmas gifts this year were pretty outstanding, unexpected and entirely needed. Couldn't immediately find a posting here where everyone listed the cool things they got so I'll put it here:

OUTER LIMITS: SEASON 2
TWILIGHT ZONE: COLLECTION 2
KING KONG (1976)

Also got a major upgrade to my 125MB mp3 player (this one is 1 gig, it's a Sony and doesn't have a neckstrap like my other one but it has other great features that I can't complain about). Got some old fashioned popcorn that professes to be non genetically modified and these cool novel old fashioned popcorn boxes (those small sizes they used to have at the old timey theaters). So i've been watching the DVD's for the past day since I've been back. I took the entire week off for vacation and I can't bring myself to leave the house because I love my new stuff so much...lol

Overall I think the gifts I gave to others were a hit. My brother received "Molvania, a land untouched by modern dentistry" - it's a humor book on a fictitious country but I couldn't put it down. I also like to give DVD's to people so my folks received the Honeymooners collection.

Now I have to go back to my amazon wish list and buy the movies that nobody got me, since they haven't gotten them for me already and I am too impatient to wait for Sinbad and the Eye of the tiger.

There's no such post Susan, yours is the first.

Sounds like some great stuff you got and gave.

Myself? I mostly got movies. I had a list of movies as people always just get me crap and wind up wasting their money. My wife told me make a list for people to work from. We did a "grab bag" type of thing where the family pulled a name and had to spend $50 on that person. My A-hole brother in law pulled my name and I told my wife I was screwed. She told me I just pick on her brother for nothing, he'll do fine because he has a list to work off of.
Ah, long story short, my list wasn't taken with him when he went to the store so he bought what he thought I would want. I wanted Sin City the expanded, new version but I got the $14 version that I could have bought months ago. I got House of Wax with Paris Hilton, full screen edition (I had a big note- "All Movies Need To Be Widescreen" on my list) which was not even close to being on my list. He finished this off with The Jerk which is a funny movie, but not one I want to own and certainly not among the horror/sci-fi films I had listed. To top it off, the family gives the gifts out on Christmas eve and he...uh...forgot to bring mine. She wonders why I hate this f@#ker so much.
I then pointed out to my wife that I was correct, I was screwed. I was then informed that it's the thought that counts. I don't think there was thought there, rather a lack of. Who goes Christmas shopping with a list and leaves it home? More like he just got $50 worth of movies to fulfill his obligation. She got mad at me when I returned the movies and got a Target gift card that I used online to buy the Sin City version that I wanted plus...Alien Nation! Yes! I finally got Alien Nation! Who rocks? Who rocks? Oh I do...I do...Ok, I'm calm now.
My wife and daughter also got me AvP Directors cut, Alien, 28 Days Later, and Terminator.
Anyway, that was the hell that was my Christmas. At least my daughter enjoyed it and that's what matters most.

I know, I stress over getting just the right gift for someone, it annoys me when they go half-ass on me but it's not going to change the way I choose to pick gifts.  At least you were able to return them, I don't think it matters if you return a gift. The point isnt the thought behind it (or lack thereof) but a gesture in giving the recipiant something they will ENJOY. What's the point of keeping a gift you don't enjoy? So if you can exchange it for something you DO want, I don't see a problem with it. It's better than regifting. ;-)  When I give a gift I Always tell the person "if it's not exactly what you want I got it at such and such or I give them a gift receipt". Luckily my 12 year old godson loved his Lord of the Rings edition of monopoly. His aunt sue is so cool

Wow - i'm kind of suprised - you didn't already have Terminator in your collection?  I also got "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" but i wasn't quick to admit that. It's pretty much the only kids movie I own except my VHS copy of "The secret of Nimh". One of the few kiddie movies I actually watched growing up, I wanted it for nostalgia. And I watched it right away. I forgot how drawn out and boring the end got but I still liked it. What kid wouldn't like a movie about a witch who is searching for a spell that will animate objects to help kill nazi's who are invading?

At least you didn't get a pair of stretch pants (which in themself are dated to 80s' fashion) covered in cat hair.  Thanks grandma.....

I had Terminator on VHS but it was time to retire it and move on to DVD.

Those stretch pants sound fantastic...cat hair and all! What a thoughtful gift that your grandmother gave you.

Hey, I mostly got clothes (but I had asked for some new shirts), a cordless Dremel tool with Lithium-ion battery, and the yearly Star Trek ship ornament. My brothers and I decided not to exchange anything this year since we had gotten to the point of basically just exchanging money.

The big news is that was just the first Christmas  for us. My daughter arrives back from Japan after nine months on Jan. 12 so we are having another Christmas complete with  turkey dinner to welcome her home that weekend (I have to move her back to school on Jan. 15). Anyway, I'll get more loot then from her and my son.

My son came home for Christmas (first time he's been home since June), but no one told him that we were planning on opening presents (he thought we were waiting on all that until Sis comes home). He has a big job as a Systems Analyst wilth a trucking company and makes more than I do.

Well, his two college chum roommates that work at the same company each got their parents 42" TV's. I got my fingers crossed

I've mentioned it elsewhere, but I scored a bit of loot for christmas myself.

Deadman, Fifth Element, Lady Snowblood 1 and 2, 2046 and The Shaun Micallef P[r]ogram[me] Season Trois [Old Australian Tv show] on dvd.  Two Sin City Graphic Novels, Ghost in the Shell 2: Man Machine Interface the Graphic Novel, and varoius little tidbits, such as a voucher for a facial from my girlfriend [she's a beauty therapist so is into all that stuff.]

All in all I'd call this christmas a good one!

On another note, everyone have much planned for New Years?

Dang, sounds like you all hit the motherlode. I got a The Howling DVD (second time I've been given this movie for Christmas and I don't even like it that much), a $30 Wal-mart shopping card, an old point & shoot camera, and some candy.

I finally splurged and bought myself a set of Hammer Heads (odinn7 will know what those are) and an Arachnid CricketPro 425 (uh..they can't be used together). I guess I'll count that as my Christmas present to myself.

Hey Susan; did you get the Christmas present I got you? (http://www.smileys.ws/smls/grinning/00000021.gif)

Hammer Heads? You actually play, huh? That's cool. I used to throw Piranha (26 gram) for competition. I had 2 sets; my good ones and my "eet fuk" ones for practice and general bar room fun. I miss playing.

My wife and I decided to seriously consume this year, and bought the Big-Ass TV we've been pondering getting for years... bought a 52" JVC DLP.  Man, this is a new way to watch movies at home.  We agreed that would be our present to ourselves.  This is not our usual M.O. for Christmas, but we decided we'd do that this year.  We don't get any TV reception and don't have cable -- it's all just movies.  So we can totally coke ourselves out on movies now.  =)

Also got the second season of the new Battlestar Galactica, socks, Ghostbusters I and II.

Post by: dean on December 29, 2005, 10:26:56 PM

Party at Zap's place, apparently we have to bring the coke though...

That's a pretty good christmas methinks!

Oh and on another note, a friend of mine bought Ghostbusters I and II the boxset, and apparently it comes with a few episodes of the animated series on it, though he hasn't opened it yet so we don't actually know.  Do your copies have some on the discs?  I have about two episodes on video, and I really liked the tv series, so it would be a nice addition to the collection and was just curious.

Looks like the disc for Ghostbusters II has two episodes of the animated series on it.

There's a little bookie full of storyboard sketches in the boxed set, too.

I got a C-Stand a Tripod base, lots of gels and filters, a new pair of Birkenstocks (mom gift), and some dinky little "Great Moments in FIlm!" book. The C-stand is great. With my demands for extra arms or places to put my drink, I'm sure I can find a use for it. No, actually it will be an invaluable resource for my upcoming film and video projects. There is nothing, I mean nothing, that works better on a set than a C-stand.

Yeah baby

Hey Scottie, bout how many ships will I have to plunder to be able to afford a c-stand?

That's on my 'to buy for film junk' list, though I think I'm in more need of a proper microphone with make-shift boom than anything else really.

Just curious!

Zap,

I've been looking at a 61" InFocus DLP that shows up on Woot.com every now and then.  Is DLP worth the money, or should I hold out for a large price drop on an LCD/Plasma?

I've already been dissed for my present by my brothers-in-law, but I think it's kind of cool. I got all three seasons of Gilligan's Island on DVD. I've always had a soft spot for the castaways (and my fantasy has always been to live on a deserted island), so I'll enjoy rewatching the show. No one around here appreciates my taste in movies (or much else, for that matter), so no one gets me movies.

I also got some gift cards, but I haven't decided what to get with them yet. I may get a better MP3 player. Or lots of DVDs.

Go to ebay. On ebay there is a photographic wholesale dealer called Amvona.com

http://stores.ebay.com/amvona-com

Amvona sells ridiculously cheap equipment because they have a ridiculous amount of it. My c-stand only cost $103 for an x-large one and I bought an $800 wholesale tripod base for only $54.

Right now there's a medium sized c-stand for bid with three hours left and an auction price of $45. An x-large one like I got is selling for $63. If those prices are too high, wait it out. Again, they sell stuff in cycles all the time so if a price is too high for you on one auction, wait for another one to come around because it will, and it will probably be cheaper.

A microphone is a great idea, but buy a decent boom pole to go with it or you'll hear your boompole operator's shifting hands the whole time. Buy something with rubber grippers and an extension. Also, to go with all of that, I suggest buying a DAT or Mini disc recorder for external sound, just because no matter what form of in-camera sound you are using, it will never be better than 16 bit. I've used both and they both work fine. But remember, these digital recordering devices will only sync up to digital video. If you try to use film, they will go out of sync. For film, you'll either need to get a crystal sync motor ($$) that matches the frequency of the digital recorder or use a reel to reel Nagra ($$).

Enjoy.

I didn't make out so great as y'all.   I got a bunch of much needed shirts, some books, a lot of food and cooking stuff, the obligatoory $1 Felix the Cat DVD from Target, and seat covers for the car.   Our big gift to ourselves was to replace our awful 15 year old 80's styl;d blue corduroy couch with something from THIS century.  All in all it was an embarassingly practical Christmas.  At least it was spent in a beach house on the coast, courtesy of my folks visiting.

I got three pairs of LLBean flannel lined pants and new slippers (my last heating bill was $145, so that's what I wanted) and a DVD of The Producers.  Who needs Nathan Lane and Mat Broderick when you've got Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder.

It was the first Christmas with my new dog, Sparky.  I wasn't sure how he'd handle a Christmas tree, the wine rack in the kitchen spooks him, but he was fine with it and with my parents' Westie.

The Media Play here in Toledo (& elsewhere) is going out of business, right now things are 40% off, and it looks like there are some good pickings still left.  That's my plan for tomorrow.

Here is what I got:

Seasons 1-4 of Curb Your Enthusiasm - Gotta love Larry David.  Episode after episode, the man makes an ass out of himself, and everytime it is hilarious.  One of the best shows on TV, and I'm glad to have it on DVD.

Minority Report - Got this one on DVD.  I still haven't seen it, although I've heard it's quite good.

20 Minute APC UPS - I'm a big computer nerd, and my old battery backup recently died.  I was given a mid-range APC battery backup from my parents as a replacement.

Various clothes

Scene It - Actually the only thing that I mentioned I wanted for Christmas.  Really fun game to get a group of friends playing.  The variety of the questions really surprised me.

F.E.A.R. + Quake 4 (PC) - Got both of these for Christmas from my wife along with the Curb box set.  I'll be doing a brief write up on the site soon comparing both games.

That is it.

Dean, a facial? How very metrosexual ;-)

Menard - i'm like you, I'm about to go on amazon and start buying xmas gifts to myself. After all, at least I know i'll like them. And I don't think I can wait until next xmas!

Btw if anyone is thinking of getting an MP3 player I can recommend IRiver, I have an older model but they are GREAT (plus im a fan of the neckstrap feature, most mp3's only come with clips or armbands), i would think the newer ones with the 1 gigs aren't much different. They also come with pretty cool earbuds - Sennheiser (sp?) Just a word of advice, although I love my new 1 gig mp3 which was a gift and I am very grateful for it - don't ever buy Sony. They have this little restriction where the software can detect if you downloaded music on your player from other computers and it won't allow you to make any transfers until you delete everything. Plus their earbuds are too big and Sony brand, so the sound isn't as great as my other ones and they hurt my ears, i'm going to swap out the buds but i'm thinking of ordering an extra pair since i will still use my other mp3.

While I spent most of today putting up all my xmas crap, I watched "King Kong" last night and plan on popping in either the Twilight Zone or Outer Limits tonight. Anyone have any favorite Outer Limits episodes? I only watched this show YEARS ago so none of them are familiar to me.

There was a Twilight Zone episode I popped in last night that was good - 8 astronauts go into space and are lost. The ship crashes on a planet and all die but 3 who have little water and their surroundings are hot and desertlike. They search in all directions for signs of life or something, and one of the guys starts to go a little crazy. He kills one of the others for his water and plots on killing the Captain. Just at the end there's a great little twist where one of them is dying and points to something over the mountain he saw. Then when all are dead but the one crazy guy he marches up that hill and looks on the other side

and he finds.....

a road with telephone poles. They are in Nevada and never left earth.

Ska,

We looked a lots of big-ass TVs before we decided.  I think whatever you do, you must personally look at *the* model you are considering buying before you buy it.  There are so many pros and cons, but we liked the DLP's clarity, color, and wide viewing angle.  (I sound like an ad.)  Nice simple lines to it, not a lot of wasted space.    We've watched some big movies on this set so far (Lord of the Rings movies) and stuff like ST: TNG episodes, and we've loved it.

We've been watching season 2 of Galactica, enjoying that quite a lot.    I better watch it, because if I buy a Twilight Zone DVD, I'll end up buying all of them...  Ah, I'd love to see "Time Enough At  Last" again.  (Burgess Meredith, the misanthrope who loves his books, and ends up being the only man left on earth... remember that one?)

Used to love Outer LImits.  A late nigtht TV indulgence for me.  Although I can't remember many episodes off the top of my head, I do remember one where the power went down in some small town, except in the foriegner's house, and eventually the people went crazy and trashed the place.  Of course, all this was just a test by the government to see how ready the population was in case of crisis, and as such it's a great episode.

You really have got to love irony like that, and Outer Limits was full of it!

[oh and I didn't choose to get the facial, Susan, but my GF is a stickler for looking after your skin, but hey, if that's the price for being beautiful, that's fine by me!]

This is my Christmas haul:

Firefly
The Dead Next Door
Escanaba in Da Moonlight
Dark Angel, season 1
American Gothic the series
Concert DVD - Killswitch Engage

Band T-shirts,  Return of the Living Dead t-shirt, Night of the Living Dead hoodie, "Zombie Repellent" T-shirt, and jewelry.  Yes.  It was a delightful Christmas.  Concerns were voiced that perhaps my zombie "obsession" was "unhealthy".   I say nay.

Its a late post but hey who cares?

I got video games Gutair Hero being the stand out and some CDs like the Ramones collection as well as DVD like the Warriors and Aeon Flux dvd set.

My friend got me a bottle of Thunderbird wine. I didn't drink it yet but last time I had it I got wasted on one bottle. I also got a bottle of Jack Daniels for New Years.

Why do people get me booze for the hoildays anyway?
