GRAND MASTERS OF WRESTLING - Bought this for $1 DVD at Walmart the other day. The pro wrestlers featured are The Iron Shiek, Nikolai Volkoff, Ken Patera, Iron Mike Sharpe, Bam Bam Bigelow, "Classy" Freddie Blassie, and some riduculous masked wrestler called The Mighty Maccabee who wins this world title in some gymnasium in North Jersey from The Iron Shiek. There seems to be some small promotion in North Jersey that even I haven't heard of that offers us canned audience applause on the DVD when clearly the half empty gymnasium is clearly un-interested and barely moving. Here are some of the highlights of this DVD:
1) Iron Shiek pre-match interview. Still has his top interviewing skills. One of the greats. The match itself stunk as he fought The Mighty Macabee who beats him for some unknown world title. He also offers his $1,000 dollars to anyone who can duplicate his feat of strength with the Iranian clubs.
2) Freddie Blassie singing his #1 hit from the 70's called "Pencil Neck Geek". He was #1 for 50 weeks on the Dr. Demento Show. He could barely move, but was still sharp with the wit.
3) Nikolai Volkoff still has his same wrestling capibilities as back in the 80's (which was zero). He also sings Cara Mia Mi and Hava Nagilah for this entirely Jewish audience and promotion. At first I thought I'd come across some kind of interesting wrestling promotion from Isreal, but it was from North Jersey.
4) Bam Bam Bigelow does a walk through match with Nikolai Volkoff and actually walks out of the ring during the match and back to the dressing room from which he doesn't return.
5) Iron Mike Sharpe a classic bad guy in the 80's does his same classic routine here only with a few added pounds. He was great to see at live events in the 80's.
6) The Mighty Maccabee who wears a Jewish star of David on his outfit won the world title on the show and you could tell that he had never stepped into the ring or at least was a complete newbie. He also wears a mask and when the shiek gets himself disqualified when Iron Mike Sharpe runs in the ring to help the Iron Sheik. The Mighty Maccabee request 5 more minutes if he takes off his mask. Well, he takes off his mask only to reveal another mask as The Mighty Maccabee finishes off the Iron Shiek with some really poor wrestling moves. I know the Iron Sheik was completely disgusted with this event. Hope he was paid well.
It was still an interesting DVD as we see a couple of wrestling legends again only now as old timers. Worth the dollar spent, but that was about it.
