A friend & I were talking about classic sci-fi tv series the other day, & the subject of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century came up.

One of the things I could never get past was how all the citieshad the prefix "New", because they all had to be rebuilt after World War Three.

What I've always wondered is, how would they handle renaming the cities that were already called New? Would New York become New New York, or New Improved York, or maybe even Third York?

And why Chicago? Heck, why do all these sci-fi series always establish the post ww3 new world capital in some big city that would clearly get nuked clean off the map? How come the capital of earth is never in some quiet little out of the way place that no one's ever heard of, like Crewe Virginia, or Manvel Texas, or Dyersburg Tennessee?

I think it would be named like in Scfi Anime either "Mega York" or "Neo York" :)

In Harry Turtledove's Worldwar novels, Washington (along with other cities) is nuked by aliens who show up during WW2. Little Rock, Arkansas becomes the capital of the USA. The same thing happens to the Germans, but I can't remember which city replaces Berlin.

And this brings me to the topic of nameing planetary colonies.
What are some of the best named planets in a movie or T.V. show?
Naboo? Sounds like a baby's babbeling. Yeesh...

I once had a dream where a claymation freddy kruger who could shoot lasers out of his claws was going to fight spider man, but i woke up before it got past the setup. That kinda p**sed me off, as up till then it was the most kick-ass dream i'd ever had
