Slimo! Slimo! Slimo!

« on: June 29, 2006, 01:04:38 AM »

I just came up with this great idea for a party game for people who watch lots of schlock. It's called "Somebody Already Did That" and it works this way: whoever's turn it is (decided by a round of Spin the Bottle or rolling some dice, or some other random method) makes up a brief plot idea for a movie he's never actually seen done. The challenge is for the other players to come up with a movie in which someone actually used that idea, or something very much like it.

If the other players can't think of any movies that fit, they have to take a shot of whiskey/be wedgied/pay ten cents/face some other minor torture as punishment. If they can think of a movie that fits, the guy who gave out the idea in the first place has to take this punishment instead. If the question of whether any other player's suggested movie fits the description is in doubt, the other players decide by majority vote whether it fits the description enough or not. If so, the player who gave out the description still has to take his punishment. If not, the player who suggested the movie has to take the punishment instead (and the other players don't).

Example:

"It": "Let's see... this would be a porno movie in which nobody actually gets naked or has sex on the screen."

First player: "Uh... Stanley Kubrick's version of Lolita?"

Second player: "I don't know about that... Nabokov didn't think it was supposed to be a porno."

Third player: "And didn't they show Humbert Humbert in his underpants or something?"

First player: "I don't think so. Anyway, that's not really naked."

[And so forth.]

What do you think? Would that be fun?

Sounds like a great idea!  Kinda like those six degrees of seperation challenges where you have to link person A with Person B somehow via less than six people.  Lots of fun!

Though as plots go, I'm sure since most of us are used to the absurd, we'd go pretty well at this game.  Besides you can make it really difficult.

Here's one to start off on [could be easy, but hey it's a start:]

An action movie with alot of gun-play/showing off of guns, but noone actually gets shot.

Not a movie, but the tv show "The A Team" certainly fits that description.

That's easy: any made-for-TV G.I. Joe movie would probably qualify. (Sure, plenty of things get shot, just none of the people in or around those things. If people ever did get shot, they'd have to replace their cast regularly, and there's no budget for that.)

Wedgie! Heh heh heh...

Here's one entry I would try out for this game: a romantic movie in which love blossoms between a guy and a girl when they get stuck in a stopped elevator together. I don't remember seeing any movie that went that way, but I'll bet someone has done it.

Would that be the filmclip for the Aerosmith song "Love In An Elevator"?

Depends. What was the movie from which the clip was taken, and did it involve actual romance of some kind in an elevator?

I'm pretty sure it was just the filmclip, don't think it was part of a movie.... (Still, a filmclip is a short movie isn't is?)

If it isn't from a full cinematic feature, it probably doesn't qualify as footage from a movie. (Music videos sometimes have a story just like a full feature, but mostly they don't.) Of course, this is the part of the game where we'd put the example given to a vote from the other players, but this was all just a hypothetical example anyway.

Great game though... whats the next challenge?   (BTW can we get a vote, preferably from those who know the Love In An Elevator filmclip, as to whether that counts?)

Well it all depends really.  I'd say it counts if it's a video clip with a storyline [since that's pretty much my only criteria for what does and doesn't count.]

On that note, I know that some TV series have had that plot point, but for the life of me can't remember which.

Having just seen the music video for Aerosmith's number on Youtube, I'd probably vote against it anyway--it's not only plotless, it's more about screwing in an elevator than love in an elevator. (The description I gave, remember, was about "romance blooming" in an elevator, not "A guy and a gal get it on!") Of course, the progression from loving in an elevator to making love in an elevator is entirely probable in anything Hollywood makes, though it's sleazy and gratuitous for the movie to go that way.

In You've Got Mail starring Tom Hanks, there was a scene in which a crummy romance comes to an end in a stopped elevator. (In that same scene, one of the bit players in there tells the others trapped with him that he has decided to marry his girl as soon as he gets out and shows them a picture of her.)

If TV series are allowed in this game, I could point to at least two that had a kind of romance blooming in an elevator. There's The Prince Who Turns Into A Frog, episode #16, as seen here:

Small | Large

I happen to think that's a rip-off of this:

Small | Large

That, in turn, is a live-action remake of episode 12 of Hana Yori Dango, a very respectable romantic comedy anime. (In the next episode of this series, Doumyoji, or "Matsujun" as he's called here, tried to explain to his friends how his date with Makino went, unintentionally wowing them with his claim that "She strangled me all night long" in an elevator! One of them says "Whoa! My girlfriend never tried that with me!")

The next challenge? I don't know. I don't like doing all the work myself. Try coming up with one yourself.

Well to go slightly back to the elevator question: I just thought of Mallrats.  Although that was a more deliberate stopping of an elevator than getting stuck, so I leave that up to the jury.

As for the whole rules thing, it makes it easier to include TV series.

Anyway, for the sake of injecting life into the game, I'll put out an easy one: name me a movie where the main antagonist is betrayed succesfully by his partner in crime [and no I'm not counting Star Wars...]  It always just seems as if the main antagonist always kills off his partner/friend as they're pulling off a power play, and am wondering how often they actually succeed in their plans within the filmic medium.  After all, being the second in charge of an evil villain usually seems almost as bad as being an Ensign on Enterprise...

I can think of some examples of the henchman killing off his boss, but usually only when the second-banana is clearly the real villain and finally takes his rightful place. That said, if the main villain is successfully betrayed by his subordinate, was he really the main villain?

Didn't Titan A.E. have the head bad guy boss lose out to his subordinate? As I recall, his subordinate didn't succeed in killing him, but he did succeed in seizing authority from him.

Of course, that was also a crummy film with a convoluted story blatantly ripped off from a dozen other movies and lots of overlong scenes obviously there for no reason but to show off the computer graphics. It was kind of hard to tell what was going on there.

Having  recently watched Titan AE, it sort of went like this

Hero is saved by Rescuer

Hero discovers his Rescuer has betrayed him

Rescuer is in turn betrayed by his Sidekick

Rescuer kills Sidekick, has a Change of Heart and sacrifices himself for the Greater Good
