So, the sudden realization that the Nicolas Cage remake of the Wicker Man has turned out to be more than a rumor has given me a powerful thirst to see the original version again. The only problem: after much frantic searching in the past 24 hours, I've only been able to find the American cut. Is it worth it, or should I hold out a couple days and pay the extra money for the box set on eBay?

I don't know which version I saw.  Lots of naked bits.  I'd hold out for the box set.  Unless they want an unreasonable amount of money.

Yea, you should see the original uncut. I don't like remakes of good films, but THE WICKER MAN could work out as a remake. I think the story has much to tell.

I saw it on the Big Screen during its initial American run, and have since seen the Hammer video, but don't know how edited what I've seen is --
What I saw, I enjoyed very much, so I'd say that the generally available versions -- be they "American" or not -- are really quite good, so no, I wouldn't necessarily wait for a special set.

Yes indeed, the remake is in the can and will be released Sept. 1.

Read the IMDB profile of the movie, check the "Alternate versions" section and get the version that has more footage.

So, I'm assuming this new Wicker Man will have a different ending, seeing as the original twist ending is already well known.

This is a special movie for my family because it's where we got my daughter's name, Rowan. The funny thing is that my wife liked the name and gradually convinced me. I joked that we could tell people she was named after the kid in The Wicker Man. However, when Rowan was a few months old, my wife tried to think of where she had come up with the name in the first place. After much thought, we concluded that Rowan really is named after the kid in The Wicker Man.

Now she's pushing Tegan as a name for a future daughter, and it occurs to me that we watched The Five Doctors a couple of months ago.

It's not what you say, it's how you say it.

Try to get a copy of the Limted Edition Wooden Boxed set of THE WICKER MAN.  You can still find them online and in some stores.  It contains both versions of the film.  The longer cut merely includes a few more scenes at the beginning and re-edits some of the continuity.  Both versions are very good.  The main negative with the longer cut is that some of the footage is from sub-par sources.
