Um, Zombi! (kidding!)
I'm not sure I know of any serious zombie films other than the Living dead series.

Welcome to the board Ian.........My favorite Zombie films that I recomend including the Romero films are:

Last Man On Earth
Night of the Living Dead
Zombie (directed by Fulci)
Tombs of the Blind Dead
Return of the Living Dead
Nightmare City
Let Sleeping Corpses Lie
Dawn of the Dead (original & remake)
Shaun of the Dead
White Zombie
Evil Dead Films

Also I made a whole list of Zombie films for you on a recent post.

Scott's list is already a good one.  I would add "Children Shouldn't Play With Death Things" to a short list.

the goriest ones I can think of would be Braindead, Redneck Zombies, Premutos, Zombie Holocaust, Dead Next Door, and Zombie Doom (super bad low budget but crazy extreme gore, more ninjas in it than zombies though)

Deathdream is my fav non-gore zombie film, only one zombie in it but technically a zombie film
