Great Kung Fu movie.  This movie has good fighting and great costumes.  Worth buying.  I saw the sequel as well, and I didn't think it was that bad.  Certainly not as good as this one but it's okay.

Note this is not the same as Iron Monkey, an asian Robin Hood story

In 1977 Shaw Brothers star Chen Kuan Tai stars and directs this handsome independent production for the Ching Hua film company. Chen broke his contract with the Shaw studio to make this film but was forced to go back after the film's completion due to the loss of his lawsuit. Shaw Brothers stars Chi Kuan Chun is in the role of a monk and Leung Kar Yan is in the role of a ruthless manchu captain. Bulky Tae Kwon Do exponent Kam Kong Plays the manchu leader. Shaw Brothers screenwriter Ni Kuang took part in writing the story for the screen. The story concerns a young man called 'Iron' who due to the loss of his family caused by the manchus goes to the shaolin temple to train in the Shaolin Monkey Fist style. When he is ready he sets off on his quest for revenge, he goes to join the manchus so that he can get closer to the leader to get his payback. The leader, an exponent in the Eagle Fist style is now in a confrontation from which there is no escape. After a long battle the young man goes back to the shaolin temple to become a monk and the film ends with a buddhist ceremony while the guy's head is getting shaved and the scene ends by moving the camera into the direction of a golden buddha while the screen reads 'the end'. The beginning is brilliantly done as it shows the monkey and eagle kung fu masters doing a demonstration of the arts and then it actually shows a real monkey and eagle in battle while the narrator tells about the 2 arts. The training sequences are good but they could have been elaborated and the kung fu is excellent as well as the sets and props constructed for the film. An independent production with a taste of the Shaw Brothers. Mr Chen I salute you!!

MY RATING: 8/10(would have been better if the film was better remastered and restored)

The newer martial-arts-version of iron monkey is still trash but much better.

Most of this old kung-fu movies are pure boredom compared with Chat Lee´s (or is it Chet Li´s?) martial-arts-productions!

See "Chinese Ghost-Story" or "Chinese Swordsmen" and you know what I am talking about!

Iron monkey is a visual and emotional experiance. A little understanding of Chinese Philsophy does help when trying to unravel the motives of some of the main characters. If you are intrested in Eastern films and philsophy (& martial arts) then this is deffinatly worth the watch. My advice would be to not listen to people who discredit this film especially as they either don't know who Jet li is or obviously can't spell his name. Happy watching
