Try it now... Small | Large

That fight scene must've taken months to create and film.
At over 8 minutes long, it's one of the longest fight scenes I've ever seen.

It's a good one.  Loads of fun.  I really need to watch more Kung-fu films from this era.  My supply of Kung-Fu type films has slowly dwindled lately...

Yeah, it's from 1983, which is fairly obvious.  Blend of old school in most of its shooting style, with some of the exaggeration and excess of new wave.  That's generally a good thing, as in a lot of cases they get the best of both worlds.  I've been meaning to see this one for quite a while.  This is also directed by Lau Kar Leung, and assumedly choreographed by him and his brothers.  He's done a lot of awesome stuff.  He choreographed all all three of the original One-Armed Swordsman films (including New One-Armed Swordsman, heh), choreographed and partly directed Legend of Drunken Master, and numerous other films.  He also made a recent screen appearance in Tsui Hark's Seven Swords.

BTW, Shu Feng (the original lead) died in a car crash while this was being filmed, that's why Gordon Liu is the lead.

Neville...I'd give that fight scene a 2 out of 10.   Thumbdown
There were several strikes the protagonist made where you could clearly see they did not connect.

You want really good fighting?

The 8 Diagram Pole was decent. Too much wire work for my taste and there seemed to be a lack of harmony in style. It was a brawl, not a refined dance of kung fu. I preferred the Monkey kung fu for its better cohesion of form and style. Good shots of the feet to give balance to the fist work and nice perspective shots of the attacking pole. Most of the thrown kicks and punches landed close to their mark and the multiple fighters at once looked and felt naturalistic.

The fun part for me in these martial arts type movies has always been that what you're seeing is impossible in the real world, but they make it look so real and graceful that it's impossible not to believe and enjoy what you're seeing. Another aspect of these movies I enjoy is that the female characters are as good as their male counterparts and are not shy at all about getting in there and fighting. I can't abide helpless females.
