After reading the synopsis on the back of the box and knowing that it was directed by the same guy who co-directed the Blair Witch Project, I had to rent it.

Here's what it's about:
"Experience the evolution of terror. From the co-writer and co-director of The Blair Witch Project comes this shocking story of four men determined to exact revenge against the savage alien life form that held them prisoner and killed their friend. But in this life-and-death game of hide-and-seek, will they be the ones who are found and destroyed? Prepare for the relentlessly harrowing journey that will leave you disturbed ... horrified ... Altered."

This was an awesome movie!

!!SLIGHT SPOILERS!!

This is an alien movie with a good backstory.
Apparently, 15 years ago, five boys were abducted by aliens.  Three were let go after a couple of days, but the other two were relentlessly tortured and experimented on for days.
The younger brother of one of the boys who was freed earlier dies in their captivity...the one last remaining boy is eventually released.

Now, 15 years later, the aliens have come back and the remaining four survivors want revenge.

This has some really great effects and I personally thought the aliens looked cool.
They're some vicious and nasty creatures!

Whatever you do, don't look them in the eyes.  If you make eye contact with them, they can get into your head and control your mind.
And definitely don't let them bite you...or else you'll experience one of the most horrible deaths imaginable.
You'll literally rot to death!

I was very surprised at how good this was and may just have to buy it...it was that good!

You may notice a couple of comparisons to Feast but this is actually a very original movie and quite different from Feast.
It's set in the woods at night with ominous trees everywhere and all of the actors do a great job.
I was expecting this to be some crappy low budget thing....boy was I pleasantly surprised.

Best line in the movie:
"How does it feel to be probed c**ksucker!?" After a guy harpoons an alien to the kitchen wall.

You guys definitely gotta check this movie out! If you liked Feast, you'll like this.
I give it 4.5 out of 5   Thumbup

Never heard of it.  I'll need to throw it in my Netflix.

Thanks for the heads up!

I put this on top of my Netflix after Ashs post and it is pretty good. It fast paced like Feast and the alien was interesting.

SPOILERS AHEAD:

Some things that bothered me was how did the the main charater know that if you killed a alien that the rest would destroy earth?. And how come the aliens where so afraid of him? Is it because he passed all their tests? Smells like a sequel  TeddyR

This sounds good! I am adding it to the Netflix queue now. Screw that Devil Wears Prada thing The Other Half wants to see.  TeddyR

Altered! Damn good movie indeed. I was going to write a review, but something went wrong somewhere along the line. Whatever, though, I'll just rent some crapfest and review that instead.

I wondered the same thing...
If the aliens can get into your head just by looking into your eyes, you have to wonder if you could learn a thing or two about them when your minds are connected.
That's how I figured the main character knew that they would destroy all human life if even one of the alien beings were killed.
The fact that the alien had to be kept alive no matter how many nasty things it did was always in the back of my mind...and the characters' as well.

This was the first alien movie I've ever seen where you shouldn't kill the alien.

Wyatt had some psychic abilities and was able to burst the alien's brain when he focused on him hard enough.
He told the others that he was "Altered".

The one thing that I didn't get was why a dozen or more aliens passed him in the middle of that field when he knelt down and they didn't do anything to him...they just kept on walking.

By the way...how'd you like the intestine scene?
It hurt me just watching it!

Spoilers within

Ok kiddos I FINALLY got around to watching this movie, and it was OK. Yes that's right I said just OK. Maybe my mind wasn't into it, but I wasn't as impressed as others have been. Not to say their opinion is wrong, far from it. I just thought to many pieces to the story was missing ... stuff just didn't fit together. To much talking about stuff that happened before the film begin.
The story didn't feel fleshed out, it was like a snack pack when you ordered something more, I was left hungry and wanting when it was over, I didn't feel like the story was told. to many unanswered questions.
Granted some of the SFX was pretty good and some was lacking, the rotting skin guy had on a latex suit and it looked like a latex suit just as the alien did. The gut scene was pretty good even if I thought the guy would have been in either shock or a tad more pain they he expressed if his guts being polled out like a bag of rope.
And the Sheriff is responsible enough to do his duty and "check things out" on 'yet another alien report at Wyatt's' place, but he's irresponsible enough to have a few beers on duty. And where did this mental powers of Wyatt's all of the sudden come from? Did he get them from the aliens? Order a learn at home book? What? never really explained that. Anyway you get the idea, it was ok and that's it just ok.

2 out of 5 in my book.

I LIKED this movie - it had enough unexpected bumps and turns to keep me entertained all the way through.

Just seen it. I especially liked the beginning. Usually, in a monster movie, the characters stumble around without a clue as to what is happening, while the audience knows what they're dealing with (if only because the audience knows the title). Here the characters knew exactly what they were dealing with, and you as a viewer had to figure it out. I also liked the 'bunch of not too intelligent rednecks capture an alien' premise. Very well done how the situation rapidly degraded through bickering and some not too smart moves.

However, after the alien got loose, they kind of lost the plot and relied too much on 'jack in the box' effects. Also, they could have done more with the fact that Wyatt had been altered.

Still, definitely worth watching.

This has to be one of the best B movies of the recent years. It's not good in a self-conscious "let's-be-cool" way, but a rather understated film instead. Much of the stuff in it has been done to death, like the single scenario a la "Assault on precint 13", but the script is a very good one. Characters ring true and we aren't told anything we don't need to know, specially regarding the little grey men, which ends up working in its favour.

And Eduardo Sánchez packs some really nasty moments in there. I can't tell what was more unsettling, the scene were the alien gets his nails too close to a roll of intestines or the eery scene when it gets to use his mental abilities with some members of the cast. And the transformation near the end... pretty nasty, but never crossing the boundaries into exploitation.

If Sánchez gets to make more movies, I'll do my best to watch them. I didn't care much for all the "Blair Witch Project" thing, but here he shows he could be an interesting director.

Due to the horrifying nature of this film, no one will be admitted to the theatre.
