Recent DVD Purchases

Once again Andrew, thanks for doing The Mutilator review!  Can't wait!  Also, what are the special features on that Region 2 DVD?  I might have to pick it up.

Special features on the DVD were almost nil, but it is a low-rate VIPCO DVD (think Brentwood quality).  The picture quality was fair, about what you would expect from a normal VHS of a movie like this.  For extras, I think it had a small picture gallery and some trailers.  Neither interested me, so I did not check them out.

Funny thing, but I do not believe I had seen this movie before.  Could have sworn I did, but seeing it makes me doubt that.  Must have mixed it up with another film.

Has anyone seen a tv show from the 90s called "Monsters" http://www.tv.com/monsters/show/379/summary.html?q=monsters&tag=search_results;title;0 on DVD? It's a hard title to search for.

My recent DVD purchases are as follows:

Creature Unknown- A 2003 guy-in-rubber-monster-suit flick where Chase Masterson (anyone know about her? Apperantly she's a big enough star to have her name on the front cover) tries to save some dumb teens from the aforementioned rubber monstrosity. I expect to be selling it at my next garage sale for $1.

Gorgo- I think you should all know about this one. If not, it's a 60s British Godzilla rip-off.

The Beast From 20 000 Fathoms- Ray Harryhausen's pre-Godzilla classic.

I've yet to watch any of them, though. Expect a review of Creature Unknown in the Reviews section sometime in the next few weeks, however.

The "Tales Of Voodoo" box set came in today.  I had forgotten that I pre-ordered it. 

It's going for about 5 dollars more than what I bought it for on pre-order now at Amazon.  I popped in one of the DVDs for a moment before leaving for work, and I must say that I'm highly disappointed at the quality.  The transfer was extremely blurry and almost unwatchable.  I hope the other films in the set aren't as bad.

I remember Monsters, should have taped it when it aired on SciFi, but I thought there were more episodes than there actually are.

The one with the couple and the giant spider was good, since it turned out the folks who booked the couple were luring honeymooners there to feed to the spider, loved that they were unseen and it was unresolved. But part of me wanted a sequel where the bride tracked them down and got revenge.

There was one I liked with Meatloaf as a shady surgeon hiding out in a stereotypical Latin America dictatorship. He had developed a formula that allowed organs to be easily transplanted without fear of rejection, and keep the donor alive. He and several friends had all benefited from harvesting the organs of a leader of the local rebellion, who all had known earlier in life. The rebel was still alive in the cellar lab, and eventually escapes to take revenge and take back his body parts. The people all turn on each other, and he reunites with his organs and plans to continue the revolution. Fun pulpy story, would have made a good Tales from the Crypt episode since it could have had a bigger budget and better effects.

Someone had started that Robocop thread the other day and I decided to try to find the 1994 television series that most folks hadn't heard of. Seems they never released it on DVD in North America (at I couldn't find a Region 1 copy anywhere). So I went on Ebay and I now have the complete series (22 episodes and the 1.5 hour pilot) on the way from Sussex, England. It's Region 2, but my player is region free.

I'll report on it when I get it in.

I bought the 10 Pack.  It's all 5 volumes of the Tales Of Voodoo series with 2 films per DVD.  I have yet to watch Jungle Virgin Force.  I think I'll give it a try tomorrow night.

I did end up watching what I thought was Devil's Express after looking it up on IMDB.  Sounded like a great film.  Sadly, the film was not Devil's Express but was actually "The Devil" which was quite bad.

That's the only thing about these cheapo DVD packs.  You never know what film you're going to end up watching.

Wow, a lot of good ones in there.  Not all are great to watch, but both "War in Space" and "Fabulous Journey" have some interesting ideas.  In case you have not seen the latter before, I will not spoil it, but there is a weird side-plot thrown in that comes from left field.

The recent 3 disc Criterion Collection of Seven Samurai easily got my pick for DVD of the year for 2006.

They've got similar type editions coming out for Yojimbo and Sanjuro in February I belive.

I'll spare everyone the list of titles. Just wanted to say that I've been snagging sets from Mill Creek for a while (not to mention reviewing them on my oft-neglected blog), and they are so worth the time and money. Just keep in mind that they are often compiling junky versions of some of these films, but it makes for a great way to sample a buttload of films for 20 bucks or less.

Most recent set I got from them was the Cult Classics, full of the old anti-drug, anti-sex films from the 30's and 40's.  Oddly enough, in the midst of such films, they added "Terror Of Tiny Town". Does that mean it is an anti-little people movie?

I'll say! It just waltzes in from out of nowhere, looks around a bit and then walks right back out. No explanation, no follow-up and no resolution! Weird.

I got the DVD of Idiocracy over the weekend, but haven't watched it yet.  (I've already seen it once.)  Thanks for reminding me of the 3-disc Seven Samurai though...or, more accurately, that I still need to watch the original 1-disc Criterion version that's gathering dust in my backlog from hell...
