What with the recent discussion about Zardoz lately, I figured it was time to pop it back in the DVD player last night.  It still is a fun movie, the message is less "eternal life sucks" and more "utopia = distopia"  And I like the pretentiousness of the director with the late 1960s/ early 1970s stylishness; it's not something I can take seriously.  For some reason, I don't think Boorman was taking it 100% seriously either.

Even in the 1970s, I seriously doubt John Boorman could have taken "The gun is good!  The penis is evil!" seriously.  Let alone the giant floating head...the random violence...the random toplessness...and about two-thirds of the rest of the dialogue.

Damn, I see a thumb smiley, but I'm really looking for one with a finger right now.

Thanks for resurrecting my nightmare; that boo/hiss button is looking awfully attractive right now.

Zardoz: Gives new meaning to self-inflicted pain.

Whoa...what is that sound I hear?

Is it a rush of seagulls? No

Is it the sound of buffalo scampering across the plains? No

Why, it is the sound of the crazies bursting free from their sanitarium to defend Zardoz.

Is it actual defense, though, or something more along the lines of "there are worse things in the universe"?

Yea, I haven't seen ZARDOZ in many years and mostly remember the floating head and this group of "advance" people. If I get a chance I'll make a point to watch it again some day.

I take it, Menard that you do not like the movie?  TeddyR

I myself have never seen it.

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.

So, they busted out of their sanitarium in order to break into your sanitarium? I got to wonder who convinced you to immolate your foot? The other patients or the doctors? Ouch. hot

Please...gent bent. Seriously.

Oh, please. Lookingup

The first time you couldn't even quote me correctly and now you wanna play I'm rubber and you're glue?

Ain't it just a little past your bedtime?

The first time you couldn't even quote me correctly

Yes...I posted an EXACT QUOTE of what you said. How did I "not quote [you] correctly"?

Sheesh. Lookingup

Let's see how well you quoted me:

Zardoz: The mention of the words bad and painful bring up memories of this. There are some peolpe who really like this movie; there are sanitariums for such people too.

I think his problem was the incredibly rude way you phrased your comment: "If you like this movie, you belong in a sanitarium."

I think that makes you a liar.

Ain't it just a little past your bedtime?

It took you until after you posted to think up a comeback, and you couldn't even come up with a good one. What a waste of an edit.

Actually the edit was due to a typo. If I had wanted to say something else, I would have created another post.

I'm a little surprised to see people arguing over this kind of thing, here of all places.   Disappointed, probably a better word.

I thought Zardoz was hilarious, looking back on it.

Aren't we all about self-inflicted pain here, Menard?

Well, I got some news for ya boy.    Damn it, Bones, you're a doctor. You know that pain and guilt can't be taken away with a wave of a magic wand. They're the things we carry with us, the things that make us who we are. If we lose them, we lose ourselves. I don't want my pain taken away! I need my pain!

I thought it was quite entertaining.  Most of the plot is pretty darned hilarious, I mean, Sean Connery in a wedding dress, the whole origin of the word Zardoz, the comical sexual stuff, etc.  But it just keeps throwing so much bizarre imagery at you that it's fun.  Sort of like, if you gave people a truckful of LSD and had them make a movie, this is what you would get.

Nathan Shumate and I did a tag team on this one a few years back.  He's still not talking to me...

I want to know how they got Sean to run around the whole movie in that fetish-wear.
