I know where my towel is.

Watched this the other night and Katie even stayed up to see the whole thing, though she admitted it was not worth the effort.

Firstly, this movie is annoying.  They keep loading on the false scares until is becomes hideously tedious and they still refuse to stop having windows blow open or a harmless character sneak up behind somebody.  Used sparingly, I can tolerate the false scares, but this went overboard.

The fact that the female protagonist had previously encountered Jason, but been mysteriously spared, also made no sense.  In fact, the only reason I can see for that stupid plot twist was so she could be frightened (by default) and subject to all the false scares we discussed.

I was trying to figure out why Rick was unable to yell a warning once Jason switched his grip.  Nor why he couldn't have kicked the side of the house when he was unable to speak.  I'll not even get into the fact that Rick and Chris' (that was the girl's name, right?) "relationship" was driving me nuts.  If I were Rick, I would have left a long time ago.  Do other guys really put up with that sort of stuff?

Oh, and the one leader of the small bike gang lived through Jason pounding his head in?  Sure, if not, the heroine had to get killed - Jason had her dead to rights unless somebody intervened for a few moments.  Lazy, lazy writing.  Let's also recreate (including drifting in the canoe - with a fake scare) the weird supernatural ending from the first film, but worse and with a rotting momma Voorhees.

In closing, the one reason to watch this is that Jason dons his trademark hockey mask for the first time.

In closing, the one reason to watch this is that Jason dons his trademark hockey mask for the first time.

And that is the only reason to watch this; well, and to also see Jason off the thoroughly annoying character from which he took the mask.

This movie borrows heavily from other movies lacking in much if any originality. Remember the scene where they are driving down the road and a police car starts coming up behind them with sirens blaring; since one of them has a bag of pot, they all start eating it to get rid of the evidence, but, alas, the cop car passes them by. That scene was directly stolen from the Gabe Kaplan movie Fast Break (1979). Unfortunately, there are a lot of scenes you can identify from which movie they came, and they are not near as well done in this.

I had the displeasure of seeing this in 3D when it was originally released, I believe in 1983. The opening credits were great, the way they came right out at you. The next good part was the ending credits.

I did buy a Jason poster after the movie. Now that was great. You could use the same glasses you got for the movie to see Jason breaking through a window with an ax. Alas, over time, I no longer have the poster or the glasses. But I still have this horrible memory of this movie.

There were several times I asked Katie, "Wouldn't that have looked great in 3D?"  The scene where Jason squeezes Rick's head and the eyeball pops out two feet was one of them.

If you check the IMDB, it says that the guy who played the annoying guy became a lawyer.  Huh.

Now why does that just seem so appropriate? TeddyR

This one was the first Friday the 13th film I saw in the theater, mostly because I convinced my dad to go for the 3D effects. To this day I have a soft spot for this film simply because it was the first in the series I ever saw. To this day I still whistle the opening theme music on occasion.

Oddly, I still have a soft spot for "The Empire Strikes Back."  This is despite making an end run into an old playhouse (it was pretty big) where a friend had hung a calendar for the movie a few summers before.  During the year or two since, some sort of wasp or hornet had infested the place and the calendar was all the way in the back, right next to the main nest.  Got the heck stung out of me and the darn calendar was partially glued to the wall as a result of being soaked and dried over and over - I guess the roof leaked along that wall.  What we came away with was barely recognizable lump of shredded paper.

What about my friends, who were going to help me get it and assist by holding the wasps off with badminton rackets?  They all stopped at the door, then ran away.

You know I have to chime in on this one :)   Glad you brought it up because I just recently rewatched it myself.  I was debating on actually reviewing this one as it's so bad, even for a Friday flick, and that's saying something.  I'm sure I'll get to it eventually.

Yeah, I have a problem with the annoying false scares too.  This one just doesn't seem to fit in the whole Friday universe like the others.  Higgins Haven?  Where the hell is that?  Wouldn't Chris's family have heard about all the curses? Sure Friday 2 just happened the day before (although Jason seems to have aged 10 years, grew 2 feet, and lost his hair) but the curse history seemed to be common knowledge even in part 1.   Gotta love the disco theme though.

Anyway, one thing that totally got on my nerves was that Jason would try to lurk in the background all creepy-like and it just didn't work.  The whole first scene with the general store couple seems totally out of place.  These two weren't teens and weren't at a camp.  Loved their astro turf brady bunch lawn heh.

The kids were annoying too.  The prankster was a bore and Chris was the worst.  I did a little bit of research and turns out she was a fundy.  She apparently tried to have them trim out the gore and lessen the sex n boob shots, etc.  I didn't like her whole story of Jason trying to kill her when she was young either.  It made no sense and didn't follow anything in the right order (wouldn't it have happened long before part 2 since it was just "yesterday" ?).

Speaking of part 2 - the whole ending of part 2 at the beginning really doesn't seem to connect to this one at all.  And the 3D gags weren't very entertaining.  And the biker gang ...hah.  My caption covers my comments about them.   Well, I have more to say about this dreadful film but I'll have to post about it later.

Here are a couple captions I've already compiled as I don't have much in the way of a recap yet:

Personally, part 3 is one of my favorites.  It's just soooooo '80s.  I thought the characters were fun and well developed, didn't find them abnormally annoying at all.  To each their own I guess.

My favorite aspect of F13th part 3 is the hilariously awful early 80's disco music that plays underneath the opening credits.

I saw this getting drunk at a friends house. One thing I kept thinking and said to my friend was:

"Hey this movie better have boobs or I'm going to be p**sed" (Yes I know real mature)

His response:

"Its a 80s Jason flick don't worry"

We watch the entire film.

End Response:

"At least the kid with the fro died"

I had the exact same complaint about this movie.  Just finished watching the 4th this evening, which was much better on numerous levels.  It also features Jason in one of his most "Nightcrawler" incarnations (as mentioned in the really fast monsters thread).

See, I love this board.  I really honestly do.  Really.

But dammit, I hate coming on here and being reminded of a film I should own yet do not.

I just bought the F13 1-8 box set along with Jason Goes To Hell.

I hope you are all happy.

I feel your pain.  The reason I have watched 1-4 of the "Friday the 13th" series lately is that I also picked up that set, due to posts on here.

On the other hand, my "Hundra" thread appears to have gone barren.  I am going to have to review that one, just to spread the love that is "Hundra" (The Female, Blonde, Man-Hating Barbarian).
