I remember a movie about someone who was put into a iron cage and lowered into a pool of hungry pirhanas.  The victim pleaded for his life, but to no avail and a few seconds later, he was just bones.  It seems that it was from the late 60s or early 70s before Corman's "Pirhana."

Was it in a river that the cage was lowered into? Or in a manmade pool? Seems awful familiar....

It was a manmade pool from what I recall. The person who killed this man was taunting him by saying that the pool was filled "hungry pirhana." I believe that it aired in Los Angeles on Chiller (KTTV?) sometime around 70' to 72'

I have a possible, based on an IMDB search.  I see that Dave (over at SciFilm) has watched the movie.  Gerry might be able to ask him to confirm or deny the scene.  I actually have this movie on order, but it is attached to a preorder for something else (if memory serves) and I think it will not come in until March.

Sure, I'll ask.  It kind of seems like there is a James Bond movie with Pirhana too, though maybe I'm thinking of Austin Powers.

Gerry,

There is, but I do not watch many of those (probably seen 4 out of all of them), so I could not tell you which it is.  "Austin Powers" was playing on that with the sharks and laser beams bit.

Sadly, I can assure you this is not the film.  I've sat through this one four or five times.  A person does get clonked over the head and shoved head-first into an aquarium full of pirhana, but nothing terribly close to what the person starting this topic posted.

Best line from this film:  "A kraut stuck me with a bayonet.  I made a lamp out of him."

Lagomorphs: menace or underutilized resource?

« Reply #7 on: January 31, 2007, 09:38:15 AM »

I think the James Bond film with the piranhas is Goldfinger, but I don't really remember any skeletons in cages (it's been a looong time since I've seen it). I do remember the bubbling water effect when someone fell into the tank--the piranhas just immediately massed upon the victim and devoured him in seconds. I seem to vaguely recall a scene like the one soundtransit is talking about, but the movie is just not coming to me. Goldfinger (if that is the right Bond film) could be it, and it was my first thought, but it doesn't sound quite right to me. It's a fun movie, though, so checking it out wouldn't be a total waste.

Well, the only film I remember with piranha is "Suillivan's Empire" from 1967 w/ Arch Johnson as the father and Martin Milner, Linden Chiles, and Don Quine as his three sons. Also with Clu Gulager, Bernie Hamilton, and Jeanette Nolan. The villain uses piranhas as a threat, then at the end of the film he falls into the river and is eaten by the piranhas.

The only films that I have found that contain piranha made before 1978 are 1972's "Piranha, Piranha" w/ William Smith and Peter Brown, 1973's "Beyond Atlantis" w/ Patrick Wayne, and the James Bond film is 1967's "You Only Live Twice" w/ Sean Connery and Donald Pleasence.

Now, I've seen "Beyond Atlantis" and "You Only Live Twice" and I don't remember any scene with piranha in them, but my memory may be faulty.

I could swear there's a villain stroking a cat in that Bond movie (or was it another?). Man they do seem to meld all together, don't they?

Sullivan's Empire seems to be the best fit for this question.  It is in the late 60s period that I talked about.  It's not on DVD so I can't know for sure.

Yeah, that would be Donald Pleasence stroking p***y, I mean his white cat, in "You Only Live Twice." That may be the first time it happened in a Bond film, as Blofeld and his white cat became something of a cliche in Bond films.

Found this description trying to track down another movie. Era is about right as it was made in 1974.

The Devil times Five

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071413/

"OK. Talk about your opportunities. You are one of five mini-psychopaths. Your bus crashes, you find yourself at a house, and in it are some of the most non-salvageable people on the face of the earth. One of them even has a tank of piranhas. Then the fun starts as the people are massacred by these little stinkers. Each has his or her own little thing they do. It's interesting they never have turned on each other. They are really something, using the people's bodies as playthings to have tea parties and such. They are very skilled in weaponry. The interesting thing is that the combined IQ of the whole household wouldn't raise the level of intelligence a point. It's a marriage made in heaven. These little squirts have big plans and awfully clever methods (a mechanical engineer would be proud). It's all quite a trip. Next time you answer the door and a little child is there, throw them in a snowbank. Just kidding."

It is nice to see some of these really difficult ones getting attention and possible answers.  Thank you for the effort.  I usually get interested in the films after reading the poster's description.
