Remember Newt from Aliens?
She was an extraordinarily brave girl who survived an alien onslaught, bonded with Ripley and was then violently killed off in Alien 3.

If she had lived, I think the Alien storyline could've gone on to much deeper lengths and could have been greatly expanded upon.
But the darn writers had to waste her.
What were they thinking?!

It's quite touching.  Makes you realize how important she was to Ripley.

What would you like to have seen done with the character of Newt?

I remember talking about this a while ago.  A few people were b***hing about the Aliens franchise, and somebody mentioned that in the comic books/novels [not sure which] the story that followed Aliens was of Hicks and Newt searching for a missing Ripley [don't ask me what she was doing...]

I really do agree that her and Hicks dying was a cheap plot point for the weak third film.  Somebody probably just said that 'well the Alien franchise is popular because Ripley's such a badass chick, but with a man and a little girl she's too soft, so let's kill them off' and they'll try and pretend they were being creative by surprisingly killing off two 'main characters' in the opening of the film.

I really do think it would have been very easy to come up with a different way of exploring the Alien universe.  I love the whole conspiracy feel of that company they work for, and adding the threat of the Aliens to any situation is always a fun way to explore the reactions of certain characters.

For a second there I got the picture in my head of Newt turning out like a John Connor type character from Terminator 2: when the Aliens attack a group who don't know what's going on, she becomes the expert they turn to in how to deal with them.  Of course this is after a couple die because they didn't listen to the 'little girl'.

But that was just a passing thought.  I'm sure there's lots of other plot points that could be taken from that as well.

It is one of my 'dream aims' in life to make a good Aliens film, or even better, an actual decent Alien Vs Predator film.  But of course this will be very unlikely to happen... just a dream.  I suppose you can add it to the 'what I'd do if I won the lottery' thread...

I hated that they killed Newt. HATED it. It so completely f*cked over the decent ending to Aliens. I never saw any reason why they had to do it. Why did Alien 3 have to pick up immediately after the second film? There seemed no compelling reason why the third film had to pick up so close after the second. It seems they could have allowed some time to pass. Plus, I always figured an adult newt could have carried the franchise further if Weaver wanted to bow out.

While I found Newt to be annoying in Aliens, I still understood her importance and relationship with Ripley and she shouldn't have been killed along with Hicks. In all honestly it felt like it was done in the name of "Shock" for Alien 3 as most of the movie was just "shock".

I still hold hope for a good Aliens though. In this day in age were movies pretty much disregard its sequels and prequels (See Superman Returns and Batman Begins) to save its franchises, I could see a Alien film were Hicks and Newt are back and just ignore 3. And no Ripley clones.

I've always felt that the guys in alien 3 were lying-that Newt survived, and they sold her to a brothel for booze money or something (Ripley was too butch for that, so they decided to keep her).

Actually, I havent seen alien 3 in a long time, and havent really had any desire to see it. I agree with the previous posts-they should just start over and pretend 3 and 4 didnt happen.

Amen to that, Alien and Aliens were both good, a sequel that features Hicks and Newt along with Ripley could be good too, but I have to say that if it was made the studio folks would most likely screw it up, that's something they seem to be real good at.

In order to have Newt in Alien3 they would have had to recast the role due to the actress being 5 years older.

I think I've mentioned before that at the end of #2, Newt asks if she will dream in coldsleep. I take this to mean that 3 and 4 were coldsleep nightmares. This is permissible in these cases, because they sucked.

Even if they made everything in 3 the same, they still could have said that Newt's pod was ejected or something. Then she could come back several movies later (after they realize that Ripley isn't really the indispensable character. There's a reason the movies aren't called "Ripley". Yeah, we get it, she's badass). She could have been raised by mercenaries or bounty hunters or something, there could have been an adult Newt character.

I thought Newt was annoying.  But the way they killed her off is just as annoying.  I was probbaly best for her dying, with them crashing on a planet with criminals (so of them were rapists).

Maybe they will bring her back like they did Ripely.  Somehow they would get a blood sample and clone her and make her superhuman as well.

The tribute was touching, I liked it.

My two pennies.

The Dark Horse Comics first Aliens comics did have Newt who had been in an asylum for 10 years finding Hicks.  They eventually find Ripley.

Some of the Alien novels from the mid 90s are definitely out of continuity with the Alien movies but have a character that is to represent the same Newt and Hicks from the DArk Horse Comics.  When Ripley pops up, (even after Alien 3 was released) everyone just had heard rumors she died years ago...

Thanks for pointing this video out.  It was very poignant.  I'm usually not very emotionally effected by youtube fan vids, but that one really nailed it.

It was also great to be reminded of just how great a character Ripley was in that...and how fantastic Weaver was.   She was at the top of her game, for my money.

Can a female character ever be that strongly written and acted again...while sporting an Elizabeth Perkins 'do?

I think you're talking about the comics that became the Steve Perry novel trilogy.  In those, the Newt equivalent is named Billie, and the Hicks equivalent is Wilks (a similar sounding name even).  Their back story makes it obvious who they were originally intended to be.  Suffice to say, while there is quite a bit of stupid crap in the Dark Horse novels and comics (ninjas for instance), I prefer most of it to Alien 3/4.  I do like how they for the most part portray the aliens more as animals in Dark Horse than as purely plague-like monsters they are in the movies though.  For example, in the books the aliens actually eat their hosts (though Alien 3 also acknowledges that the aliens eat people).

Haven't seen 3 in a long time have you?  Her corpse is on camera, her chest gets cut open in fact.

I mean, the shot of the corpse, etc, could have been replaced with a line of dialogue that leaves her fate open to doubt. They wouldn't have had to significantly alter the plot.
