HBO showed Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy earlier and man, that is one bizarre movie.
Many people I know don't like The Kids in the Hall.
They either don't get the humor or are turned off by the fact that many of the cast members dress like women in their skits.
Personally, I think it's hilarious when they dress up like women.   BounceGiggle

Here are a few skits that stand out for me:

CAN I BORROW YOUR AXE? Small | Large

SAUSAGES Small | Large

(this is a weird one)

And of course, the classic...
HEADCRUSHER vs FACEPINCHER! Small | Large

How about you?
What do you think of The Kids in the Hall?

I think the Kids in the Hall are funny, I have Brain Candy and other disc of there stuff.

But I would hardly call them original, they seem to me to be the Canadian Edition a few decades removed of Monty Python. Granted they are nothing close to Monty Python but that is to me who they seem to be trying to emulate in many ways.

Men dressing in drag is hardly new, it dates back many, many centuries as in the Roman times and middle ages women were not allowed to act on stage and all female roles were played by men. This continued until the 1800's ... tell your friends to read their history books.

I never really got to see them until after they disbanded. Didn't have pay cable when they were on there, and when they were on CBS, the local affiliate didn't carry their show. I was curious because of the Python comparisons, I'm a huge Python fan.

When I fianlly got to see them on Comedy Central I was underwhelmed. There's a lot of humor I "get" that I just don't like. Even comedy and performers I absolutely hate, I can usually see why people are drawn to it.  Jackass, Family Matters, Steve Martin, even hacks like Dane Cook and Carlos Mencia. But they fall into the category of after multiple attempts, and even a few skits I did like, that mostly I just don't get the appeal of.

Maybe it's the laugh track which always seems out of proportion to the humor, IMO. Maybe there's something too Canadian for me to appreciate, yet I love stuff like Red Green.

I recall liking the short film about the woman who keeps getting married and her husbands keep dying by unusual means just after they exit the church. So fianally she marries this one woman who is excitedly cheering her on every time.

The drag thing didn't bother me, like I said I'm a Python fan. But after them, Benny Hill, Milton Berle, and tons of others it's pretty played out as a source of humor. Bosom Buddies proved that.

That said Dave Foley was on NewsRadio, one of my all time favorite shows. And the Halloween episode where Dave dresses in drag and Lisa gets mad because he looks better in her dress than she does is damn funny.

They eventually kind of became self-conscious in a way I don't like. It's like they said OK, let's do a real Kid's In The Hall" type bit, something with gay porn references and grating absurdism. Or a monologue with a character who's been driven into the ground. Or a bit that's pretty much just actual gay porn with a laugh track.

I love the bit about the dock worker who's been offending the other guys with the language he's been using at work, he keeps saying "ascertain" all the time.

Yeah...
Sorry about that.

Seems there was a copyright issue with all of The Kids In the Hall clips on Youtube and every one of them were yanked off there.

I like the show as a whole, but it has some stinkers in it.  Like all skit shows, but with a worse ratio than some.  Still, the funniest skits are REALLY REALLY good.

One of my favorites was a really short one, with the two punk guys in 50s-esque clothes.  It was a two parter.

First part.  The two guys run out and look at the camera.  One says something like "I'll take Billy, you take the fat guy" and then they rush in and we see them attack people.

Second part.  Same thing, but this time the guy says "I'll take John, you take the Beast of Eternal Feasting" and then it cuts to a street corner with a guy smoking and a 20 foot tall monster standing there.

Good times.

I used to watch Kids in the Hall when they reran it in the early '90s on Comedy Central.

I was probably the only 8 year old in like, 92/93 watching it.

I know nobody I went to school with did.

A good bad movie is like popcorn for the soul!

« Reply #9 on: August 01, 2007, 10:02:56 PM »

Oh man . . . this thread revived an AWFUL memory!

I was sick . . . I mean REALLY sick with the flu, and my wife was going off to work and the kids to school every day, so after the second day, when I quit seeing visions of Elvis and dancing penguins coming to claim my soul, I told my wife to pick up a movie or two for me to watch while they were gone. She asked what kind and I said, "You know, B-movies, lame comedies, that sort of thing."  She showed up with BRAIN CANDY.  I had never heard of the Kids in the Hall and it looked pretty funny, so the next morning after they left I popped a couple of Ibuprofen and put the video on.  You have to realize that I just am not comfortable AT ALL with gay humor, and this movie seemed like one long gay joke after another!  To make it worse, I had misplaced the remote and was feeling too lousy to get off the couch and eject the thing, so I just sat there as the gay jokes dragged ON AND ON AND ON . . .

I'm still traumatized. Twirling

You know what the Kids in the Hall always remind me of? MTV's "The State". Sweet Figure Skating Jesus was that an amazing show... not unlike "Kids in the Hall".

I loved their Chicken Lady ("made from...fre-esh...eggs...eh-eggs...from my bah-dee!  My body!") and their very daring Dr. Seuss Crucifixion...

I remember when the, for lack of a better word, "pilot" appeared on HBO.  The comedy was too "out there" for my young self.  I remember being disturbed by the guy who hit on seventy-year-old ladies (a hilarious skit).

When it came back a little later for the regular series, I thought it was hilarious and have been a fan ever since.  I have all the DVD's, except for Season 3.

Now, The State is high on my wish list for DVD releases.  I have the video they released years ago.  It's MTV, which has no memory whatsoever, so I'll doubt we'll ever see it released.  Not to mention all the popular songs they used in that show.

Eh, love it all, unequivocally --
Love the headcrusher, the My pen! My pen!! sketch, the cabbage-headed jerk, the young guy who seduces 80-year olds, Chicken lady at the strip club . . . the list goes on and on for me.  Like Monty Python, not everything they did worked, but you just wait 30 seconds and the next skit would make you laugh.
Not too Canadian for me, eh?

They used to show the show on channel 4 in the UK many years ago, there was some stuff that made me laugh, especially the 'I'm crushing your head' stuff.
