I hate replying to this type of thing on this board.  We are generally a kind folk who have avoided arguments and flame wars...excluding those involving Zardoz.

I must say though, that I'm with the majority here.

You whine about people whining.  Isn't that the definition of the word "Hypocrite"?

I don't care if black comedians make fun of "The Man" or white people.  Who cares?  Isn't that also covered by freedom of speech, which you cited when lambasting your wife's secretary?

I must say that there is a lot of reverse discrimination going on today.  Why the hell do I care?  Does it bother me?

NO.

Any reverse discrimination that happens today is the direct effect of our behavior towards other races in the past.  Is it this generation's fault?  Not generally, although there are those out there who still feel themselves better than others.  I have a feeling that you might be one of them.

Hey, don't take that the wrong way.  Like I said, we're all like a big family here.  If you do feel yourself to be so much more high and mighty than others, then that's your deal.  Just don't come here whining about how much people whine.  I could really care less about what you think.

Gosh, it must wonderful to think you know everything. Tell us oh keeper of the smugness.

EDIT: What was said was true and to fact, it was said with humor to some one I know well and have traded barbs with for years. The rest is a reflection of the double standard that is in our world today. So all I can figure is that you are either too uptight or too dense to get it then that's just too bad and so sad for you, because while fact based it was written on a humorous note and with no embellishments. Some people need to really lighten up. For f**K sake it's an Internet forum not the grand council. Jeez people!

I serously doubt a bigot can deal with truth and fact. You come off with demeaning statements about people and then it is our problem for not accepting everything you say.

Be high and mighty all that you want to be. Look down upon anybody that you want. Change your story from you were ranting to now it was...uh...humorous. That is your right.

You can consider me smug, an a***ole, always right (and you are correct about that; glad you noticed TongueOut), or anything else you would like; it doesn't bother me one bit.

I'll be happy to converse with you about movies, TV, lesbians ( TeddyR) or anything else you want to talk about on an open forum; but, if you want to be demeaning to people and expect me to fall in line with you, I'll smack you down like the whining little boy b***h you are (uh...nothing personal).

Say all you want; I am not going to get into a name shouting match with you. We are both a little too old to play I'm rubber and you're glue (unless, of course, one of us was Pee Wee Herman TeddyR)

This thread has run its course.  If the goal is to discuss what was right or wrong about the situation or how it was handled, I agree that is a useful thing and could be of value to others.  If the focus is something else - directly insulting each other to prove a position, I see no use for it.

Well Andrew I think you know what the point of the thread was to be, sadly it was derailed what ever reason and quikly spun downward. The point was missed completely and the opportunity to discuss in a mature, civilized manner lost.
As far I as I'm concerned lock it.

Oh, you guys.

Cheese is so right on.

That secretary needs to watch a few seasons of What Not to Wear.  (Anyone here seen that?  It's quite instructive.)

You DO make a statement with how you dress, whether you like it or not.  If you dress provocatively but are supposed to be a professional, serving a role in a professional office, you are sending the wrong message.   The problem is hers, not anyone else's.  That this was pointed out to her, however undiplomatically, is really her problem.

Wow.... that got a little out of hand. Hahaha. I nearly hopped into this topic early on, but decided not to. The last time I was involved in a flame war, it got pretty heated, to the point where the person that began bashing me on a newsgroup (a fellow called Gore-met that claimed to be a writer of some magazine called Rue Morgue?  Wink) decided to chop down my writing skills, my website, the Rogue Reviewers, and Rogue Cinema. Needless to say, that led to some hard feelings, but that's all in the past now and only a few Rogues still harbor some anger over that gentleman's comments. Perhaps in the future we all should avoid these minor squabbles and just enjoy Andrew's site. (i.e. Everyone play nice.  Wink)

Well I certainly didn't expect to see: "you bleeding-heart-PC-metro-gangsters-ten cent-tart"  all in the one sentence, unless in the states gangsters are the new metro-sexuals or something.  That's genius!  BounceGiggle

Cheeze, I do get what you're on about, but my first impressions after reading your first post were that you did seem to come off as a bit of an ass [even if that wasn't totally the case, and yes that back story helped.]

I too am sick of people p***y-footing about certain issues/phrases, and figure we all need to just relax a bit more and use a bit of common sense.  At the same time however, there's alot of bad out there we need to be changing/fixing.  I suppose it's all a matter of perspective.  My friends and I make fun of our various races all the time, and we are all just joking around and using it as a source of pride most of the time, but there's always the flipside of somebody doing the same thing, but doing it from a genuine place of hatred [something I've come across many times] which in my mind is where we need to change people's ideas.

Anyways, as for the main point: that girl is being a bit of an idiot about things, but then again I don't know what the guy said, so hell maybe she was justified [though I doubt it from what it sounds like.]  I can't remember whether it was a Dave Chappelle or Eddie Murphy stand-up show where I saw this, but I loved the comment of one tarted up woman saying 'don't call me a whore' to which he replied, "Oh I'm sorry, yes, you're not a whore.  You're just wearing a whore's uniform'.  Saying that normally to someone you didn't know would result in two things: it being absolutely hilarious or absolutely terrible..

I don't know, I'm on the halfway point of this I suppose, between 'doing the right thing' and not going over the top about it.  I love good discussions [and that's why we have the off topic board I suppose] but for some reason this one seems to have got off on the wrong foot and I'm not feeling my return rant vibe I usually get on these things...

Well I typed out a rather comprehensive reply to this statement, but I think it would draw more fire than needed.

Political Correctness is undermining this country.
We will not deal with the issue of the boarder due to fear of offending.
We will not deal with welfare reform due to fear of offending.
We will not deal with the undermining of the principles this country was founded on due to fear of offending.
We can’t stereotype curtain cultural groups at the airport due to fear of offending.
Freedom of religion in this country only exists if you’re not a Christian.
I can refuse to rent a house to a white family if I think they are a risk, but I can’t do the same to a minority family if I think they are the same exact risk without a good chance of a discrimination complaint. (The risk is the ability to pay the rent, i.e. verifiable employment)
Everyone has to p***yfoot around the obvious and play political patty-cakes because were too afraid to call it like it is. Do I stereotype at times? Sure I do, we all do and anyone that says they don’t is either a saint or a liar. Lord knows I’ve been stereotyped enough.

Since I'm not American, I can't really coment on any of this, since most of those really are US issues that I haven't really noticed here in my country [for the most part at least], but the race issue is very much a powder keg out your way, where we are mostly ignorant SOBs here most of the time, and a bit more relaxed about it all [well in my town at least]  Sure, everywhere has the same people preaching about racial profiling and corporate racism and what not, but it doesn't seem like such a hard, harsh issue here as it seems in the US.

You're very right about stereotyping, it's crazy if you're made to feel like you're doing the wrong thing for the wrong reasons, when you very much aren't, such as the renting issue you brought up.  It also gets me frustrated, such as back in high school when a [kinda] friend of mine was b***hing about how the teacher gave him bad marks because he was black [he was Indian].  The thought didn't seem to cross his mind that he was a total moron [which he was] and was too quick to play the race card as a cop out.

Just out of curiousity, Cheeze, and you can pass this off as me not knowing enough about American culture, but how come freedom of religion only exists if you're not a Christian over there?  I figure this has something to do with people labelling a Christian as 'bigots' because of their religious beliefs or something, but I'm just wondering why that is?

Anyways, I agree with the stuff you said that I do understand[such as not talking about welfare refrom, though I'm not a US politics expert mind you].

EDIT: No need to answer that question above if you don't want to poke the bears further, was just curious!

Well if you talk the European elitist America doesn’t have a culture. For the record anyone that wants to come to this country to make a better life for themselves and their family, come on … just do it legally.
As for your question I’m not a down south bible thumping Christian hell bent on saving the world from their pagan ways. I don’t care what your religious faith might be, but when in Rome do as the Romans. If I go to Israel I rather expect to see most things Jewish, if I go to Japan I expect to see most things Buddhist, if I go to India I expect to see most things Hindu and so on.
For some reason America is so big, so powerful and so afraid of offending anyone that we end up oppressing our own culture as to not look pushy even in our own country. Stores do not say Merry Christmas in fear of offending a non-Christian, the Ten Commandment come off schools wall and courthouse lawns in fear of offending some other culture. You have atheist in this country suing to have “In God we Trust” removed from the currency. (God is a subjective word; it doesn’t have to refer to some old guy in a white robe with long flowing beard that will rain down damnation if you get out of line. God is generic as in deity, and there are over 2700 in the world today from various cultures. Pick your God.)
Since Christians are the predominate faith in the US (80% +/-) it would stand to reason that if you came here from another culture carrying a different faith then you could reasonably expect to be exposed to a overwhelmingly Christian culture. It doesn’t mean you have to adapt it nor does it mean I should have to kowtow to yours. We don’t band mosques, synagogues, temples, shrines or anything else. So why should we oppress the vast majority religion in the country? It makes no sense!
As far as bigotry goes, I think that is most associated with the fundamentalist, evangelical Christians in the religious circles. Some folks throw that word around because it has got shock effect, but in fact most everyone is a bigot to some degree by definition, which is ‘intolerant of those who differ’. Hypothetically, if you are intolerant of my views, words or opinion then you are bigoted to my position, thus making you a bigot. So I always find great irony in statements of accused bigotry, because the statement itself is a bigoted statement. It’s a catch 22; you can’t call it unless you are one.
I’ve always had the great opportunity to talk to people from all over the globe, and while some people like America there are a lot that really don’t. But I look it in terms of the poor disliking the rich. They don’t like them, but they damn sure wouldn’t mind being one. We here in the states have 1000’s coming here everyday, can’t be all that bad.
Anyway, I’m not sure if I’ve answered your question or not, if a simple question with a difficult answer. I blame it on the commies, if they haven’t had folded we still have that good verses evil balance in the world, the yen and yang. But since they are gone we don’t have an organized evil to rally against. So we end up the lone super-power and difficult to understand fearful of our owe success and excess. Fearful we might offend, fearful we won’t be loved by the world; fearful we’ll be kicked out of the best friends club and labeled a bully. The reality as I see it, is that America is walking on the edge of a razor. We will either maintain world order, or unleash world chaos. In this post cold-war-world we have no idea what I job is now. If we do something we are accused of having an agenda, if we don’t we’re accused of not caring. So even in our own country we have decided to bolster the minorities and suppress the majority in fear of being accused of oppression. Really seems to fly in the face of that entire democratic process doesn’t it? For the record I think all faith should be allowed to be represented in public places if they wish. I think most people would repect that.
Well I got off on a tangent there so I’ll stop now.
