uuummmmmm.....BOO!

« on: February 09, 2007, 02:40:05 PM »

I was just sitting here thinking of all the jobs that I have had and wow there's alot. To top things off I'm a jinx! Most of the places I've worked for went out of business.  Buggedout
Painted murals on the windows of stores and a hamburger stand. Hamburger stand went out of business.
Did some art work for a magazine, went out of business.
Cooked, and painted a mural in a restaurant, which was also a pool hall, went out of business and was torn down.
Painted a giant "Gorilla Girl"on canvas, for Circus Vargas (a traveling circus), I Think they're still around.
Worked at Zody's (a retail store like K-Mart), went out of business.
Worked at Marshall Ind.(electronics,computers). Tell you about that later on in this list.
Went to an acting school, went out of business.
Worked as an actress for one movie.
Worked as a mom, this never goes out of business.
Worked at a florist delivering flowers. Still in business.
Worked at Marshall Ind. again, went out of business.
That's some list and 6 places I worked for went out of business. Is that telling you anything?  Buggedout  BounceGiggle  BounceGiggle
Does anybody else have a list of jobs? Or what kind of jobs have to done?

Let's see, I have been:

A busboy, waiter, dishwasher and cook, all at the same restaurant
A general grunt/cook at a fast food restaurant
A snack stand attendant
A security guard
A grunt for a landscaper
A grunt for a lawn maintenance company
A grunt for a snow ski rental company at a ski resort
A grunt for a logger
A freelance photographer
A cop/crime scene investigator and arson investigator
A chemist in various positions: forensic chemistry (both local and federal government levels), EPA contract lab, industrial quality control, teaching, academic research
Owned my own consulting business

Some of those 'grunt' jobs were in my 20's and 30's, so not all of them were teen-type jobs.  I have never really worked in what you'd call a true "retail" setting.

I've only had one job so far( lucky me), since i've just begun working a little. I worked for a few months last year, from summertime to november, at a farm. Just a vegetable-fruit-food farm, no animals besides a farm cat. I washed mostly lettuce all day, working with a sharp straight bladed knife/razor (oh yeah, you always get cut withen your first week of that job. i cut into my thumb and it didnt heal for about a month, no lie. and the bledding wouldnt stop, even with papertowls and pressure for 5 minutes, its still streamed out. and i couldnt even hold the knife anymore caus eit hurt so much) But i got real wet and soaked there, and i hate that feeling all cold and wet. I saw some reaaaall nice cars though, like some nice Cadillacs and a Fleetwood, mostly convertables, i would run into osmething and drop things whenver i saw the cars, because i was in such awe. and also the giant hot air ballon that went right over the roof. I dont know where i will work this summer, perhaps a VHS and DVD factory place. a small place that makes VHS and DVD and puts the movies on them. not really any well-known movies though. Hi-Speed Video is the place.

Starting out working on my grandfathers farm from the time I could walk.
Decided to something easier so I joined the Marine Corps.
Went college and worked as a bouncer in strip clubs.
Moved and continued college and worked as a 3rd Shift Stupidvisor in a huge factory. (Nearly 500 on the shift.)
Finished college and worked as a Engineer for Mitsubshi Machine Tools (Automated/Robotic Assembly Lines)
Finally got burned out travelling internationally for 48-50 weeks a year for many years and became a independent contractor doing the same thing, just a lot less of it.
Started investing in real estate, flipping houses while still contracting a little.
Still do a very little consulting/contracting work, but mainly I'm an oppressive slum kind and understanding landlord and own a property improvement company. I also have an art studio and gallery but rarely get time to enjoy them.

But the most important job I've have, had the worst pay and that is husband and father.

Nothing quite like telling the world your whole work history.....................

Shovelling Snow - When I was about 10 years old I made $24 dollars in one day after a snow storm in Horseheads, New York.

Vineyard - In the spring they would hire and bus local kids from the community center in town and we would tie grapevine branches to long wire support fence that stretched forever. Loved it as we had to work fast because they would send the slow ones home and if they didn't like your work you couldn't come back. We would be out there so long on the finger lakes of New York State that we got wind burn on our faces.

Mowing Lawns - Mowed lawns for people around town. Those who were interested could get all kinds of work through the community center where we would hang out at night playing ping pong or getting ready for the next air guitar contest the High School was putting on. Then get pizza next door at New Yorks famous Pudgies Pizza.

Army Reserves - Join the Army Reserves at 17 years old in 1982 and went to Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri for basic training where I had some kind of swelling of the ankles that put me in the hospital for 3 weeks and was eventually sent home after no explanation of what it was. It was a split training program where I was to do basic training after 11th grade and then go back home to finish 12th grade then return to advance training for my M.O.S., but it didn't work out. It's believe my ankles swelled up as a result of the vaccines they gave the day before. Anyway a Lietenant from the company gave me the option of staying to finish basic training with a new company and miss my 12th year of High School or leaving with a general discharge. In the end they gave me an honorable discharge instead of a general discharge. Not sure why. Had bad dreams about not finishing the program for a whole year after leaving. I was told by my Drill Instructor in private that I should get a medical discharge before leaving and said if I did decide to leave that I shouldn't tell anyone I was in the army, but back then I sensed it was because I didn't finish, but perhaps he meant something else.

Receiving Clerk - Went to work for a screen printer in the receiving department where I excelled and was in charge of all goods coming in. Providing reports for all departments as to what goods came in, so they could be scheduled for printing. We printed T-shirts and after work I made extra money transporting rock concert T-shirts to big shows in Philadelphia or the airport to further destinations.  Worked they for two years from $2.35 hr. to a salary of $275 a week which was good for my first full time job. Was offered by some roadies to go on the road for this big company and make $1,100 a week selling T-Shirts at the big arenas around the country. One of the bosses came down to interview me and I told them something to the effect "I'll do a good job, won't miss work, I don't drink, or do drugs." then he said "I can use you then" and that was the end of that. Which I'm better off not having gotten the job. It would have ended badly with some sick people.

Taxi Driver - Drove taxi in Atlantic City for four years at night. Great money at first then it turned sour. Towards the end I was robbed twice. Once at knife point and the second time at gun point. Besides that I met some people in my cab like Roberto Duran (he passed gas in my cab), Lawrence Taylor with his accountant, Verne Gagne former AWA World Champion and promoter, Sgt. Slaughter, Hacksaw Butch Reed, Larry Zybysco, Sam Houston, Honky Tonk Man. Biggest tip was $100. Would get fares to Philadelphia and New York City.

Dietary Aide - Basically a waiter, dishwasher, and other kitchen duties. Working in a nursing home was fun and one of my better jobs.

Mr. Mom - Did this for a couple years as my wife makes 3 times what I make and it didn't make any sense to pay total strangers to watch our daughter at the time. In the end this isn't really a good idea as you need to work and pay taxes. If for nothing else, but to maintain a good work history. Then again maybe it was for the best. I don't regret it.

Change Person - In these beach towns of New Jersey there are a number of opportunities to make change at casinos or arcades. Boring.

Lot Attendant/Cashier - This was a good job, but it was only temporary full time filling in for 3 months for an injured employee.

Security Guard - The job itself is good for the most part. It can be rewarding helping out people. You won't get rich though. Been doing this for 13 years now. It's state type employment with decent benefits, so I decide to stay.

As you can see I work only high end jobs.  Smile

Let's see...

Yogurt shop flunkie
Newspaper delivery (to paper racks and stores rather than home delivery)
Landscape and maintenance worker
Electronic assembly line worker
Shipping clerk/warehouse worker
Meat cutter
Driver for sprinkler supply company
Long haul big rig truck driver (been damn near everywhere in the US)
Driver for intermodal company (picking up and delivery containers from railroad yards and the Port of Oakland)
Driver for welding supply company - delivered gas cylinders (great company that got sold and dissolved)
Driver for food delivery company (work was too hard to retire on)
Driver for plant/shrub nursery (very few hours)
Driver for freight company (very low pay)
Driver for another freight company (worked nights...yuck)
Driver for oil and fuel distributor (great company but I had to change jobs when they shut down the location I worked at)
Driver for different oil and fuel distributor (best place I have worked ever. Great pay and hours, plus cool and efficient people.

Since 1996 all my jobs have been as a delivery driver. That is when I went to truck school and once I got my over the road experience out of the way, went through several local jobs before finding one I like. At this point, I have no plans to leave the company I am with...unless I win the lottery.

Thunderball Fists?! I can have such a thing?!

WWW
« Reply #13 on: February 11, 2007, 01:37:22 AM »

Let's see here.... I'm only 23 (going on 24) so I haven't had the job experience of most of you guys, but here's my work history thus far:

Before I was legally able to work I did a lot of lawn mowing, leaf raking, and snow shoveling. At age 16, I got a work permit and started work at a Bavarian Pretzel Bakery. Crappy pay, but it had one excellent benefit: All the soft prezels I could eat! After 2 years there, I quit and moved onto what I thought would be, a dream job.

I next worked at Suncoast Motion Picture Company for a little over 8 months before getting fired for allegedly being a thief. It's a long story, but to cut it short, I was basically strongarmed into signing something I probably shouldn't have and blacklisted from working at Suncoast or any affiliated stores in perpetuity (at least until Best Buy sold Suncoast back to the Music Land Group). Funny part is, the manager that got me canned was soon unemployed herself. And I know for a fact that various other employees in the past took quite a few things with them and never even got a slap on the wrist. I was pretty quiet back then and afraid to say anything, and boy did I suffer the consequences.

After that I worked at A&W / Lohn John Silvers as a busboy, cook, and microphone operator for nearly a year. The only thing I never could do there was run register. (Luckily I escaped from that hellhole and came up here to Susquehanna PA when my folks moved.) Note to anyone that goes there, do not eat the hotdogs. One day I dropped a bucket of them on the kitchen floor and the manager picked them up and WASHED THEM OFF IN SOAP AND WATER, THEN COOKED THEM AND SERVED THEM TO PATRONS!

Once up here I landed a job as a video store clerk (at VIDEO KING) and lasted there for a little over a year, when suddenly I was FIRED! (Once again under questionable circumstances.) Due to some scheduling conflicts (i.e. they changed the schedule without notifying me) and an alleged "lack in work ethic" (though I stayed off the clock for a half-hour to an hour nearly every night I worked and never complained about NOT getting payed for it), I was given the boot. But here's the ironic part.....

My next job was at a different Video King outlet that was 15 minutes away and I worked there for nearly three years and became great friends with the owner. After a year and a half, he made me (unofficially) a manager, gave me a pay increase, and even took me out drinking on one occasion. I loved the job dearly, but it barely kept my bill collectors at bay so I made the jump to my current job.

I'm now the Night Manager at a local grocery store called "Rob's Market." It has been a very big step up for me (highest pay I've ever had in my life, health benefits, and a 401k plan plus I get paid holidays and a week's paid vacation every year!) though the first 8 months (before the massive flooding we had up here) were very bumpy. I'm pretty happy at this place and have recently gotten a (well deserved) raise. Because of this new job, I've been able to get a decent vehicle (2001 Dodge Dakota) and do a little bit more than just get by.

So yeah, that's about it thus far. I'm still keeping an eye out for my one big break: either I'll get an even better job, marry a rich woman, or win the lottery. The big three!!!!  TeddyR BounceGiggle

I'm only a youngen too [well by comparison with all you old folks here of course  BounceGiggle] and my work history's fairly short.

Used to work the odd weekend shift at my grandfather's kiosk at a nearby hospital.  It was great when you're 12 and you're able to earn a bit of money plus score some free snacks.  Sadly, it closed down when I was 16.

First official job was at a bakery as an after-school cleaner [since I don't count the other one].  Stayed for a few years until the shop changed hands.  Out of the 20 staff, I was one of four to stay on right after the change, but they quickly figured it would be easier to hire someone new rather than train me in the way they wanted me to work [plus I was probably too expensive for what they wanted from me].  By that time I was also working out the front serving etc.

On top of the bakery, I also refereed basketball, which I only recently stopped doing.  It had it's ups and downs, depending on the type of game, and, more importantly, the parents who were watching.  I pretty much learnt to have a pretty thick skin, and to not take any guff from someone trying to tell me the rules, when they are clearly wrong.  Luckily I was pretty good at it, and didn't often make mistakes/misjudgments.  Of course, you try telling that to the rabid parents.  I remember I had to kick out a parent/coach you threatened to 'snap me' if I didn't stop laughing at her daughter.  I was having a great game [it was a good contest] but I sure as hell wasn't laughing at her daughter.  Some people are just high strung I suppose.

After realising I needed a bit more cash than the refereeing supplied I searched for another part time job to help me through uni.  Coincidentally I landed a job at another bakery, but within the same overall company [just different franchisees] to which I stayed throughout my uni career.  Worked out the front as the only male [other than the bakers] at the whole store.   This of course means that I still figure I'm somewhat of a girly-man from being good friends with all of them, without any real male influence to guide me properly.

After finishing uni, I had to start thinking about full time work.  At this time I was working a fair bit at the bakery.  Coincedentally, my brother was talking to the owner of the store next to his work, and my [new] boss mentioned they were looking for someone, which lead to me going in, having a chat to them, and getting a job working at a store which sells high end home theatre equipment, mainly speakers.  I sell, deliver and install, and I may not be using my degree at all, but I'm loving the work, and am earning a decent wage, so I'm not complaining at all.

Still not sure how permanent this will be, but so far I'm just glad to be having fun at work, and being able to watch all the good sports on our numerous plasmas and lcd screens.
