I was a Police Cadet for NYPD for bit. Its a program that pays for college and pays you. Good pay but I didn't like it so I quit.  Don't confuse this with a regular Police Officer because its not. I didn't spend 6 months in police academy or anything.

Security guard reminded me of my father who was once a securtiy guard for a hospital, which reminded me of a couple of jobs I had when I was younger..I used to mow the lawn of the house across the street from us, but wasn't allowed to use a trimmer, so I had to use those little trimming shears to do the edging along the sidewalk and they lived on the corner.  Hatred I remember getting paid about 3 bucks.  Buggedout The other job was about 2 months after my daughter was born, it was at this print shop, mostly envelopes and business cards, on this huge printing press thingy( that's good english). After a couple of Mondays I started drawing the logos for customers business cards and then printed them up, now that I enjoyed.  Smile

Mr. Mom - Did this for a couple years as my wife makes 3 times what I make and it didn't make any sense to pay total strangers to watch our daughter at the time. In the end this isn't really a good idea as you need to work and pay taxes. If for nothing else, but to maintain a good work history. Then again maybe it was for the best. I don't regret it.

Hey, that's KINDA where I am now.  I do run my business from my home, but that generally gets done at night.  I take care of my children during the day.

And yes, you guys are right.  Being a Dad is the TOUGHEST job you'll ever love (since we are quoting old commercials...)  :)

I agree it's the toughest job, but fun. I stopped working, for the exception of the print shop which was only on Mondays and it was only for about 4 months. I was a stay at home mom until my daughter was 12 and then I got a job where I could take her to school then get off in time to pick her up, I was lucky. It was hard on us with the money situation but I wouldn't change the experience for any amount of money.  Smile  TeddyR

I put my kids to work so as they were old enough to crawl, you can't beat the cheap child labor. Toilling away in a sweat shop all day while I watch from the air conditioned comfort of the office. Really gives us that father/daughter quality time that they need so much.

That better not be the Golden Gate bridge, pal.  Cause I already own it.  And with the money I'm going to make from this deal with the widow of the former Nigerian president, I'm gonna buy the Varizzano, er varizano, er Brooklyn Bridge.

Lagomorphs: menace or underutilized resource?

« Reply #25 on: February 13, 2007, 10:09:13 AM »

Let's see...

I worked on a city maintenance crew at my first job. First day on the job I got to shovel a sewer sludge pit. Then I got moved to putting up street signs. It was a summer job, and I earned enough to buy a nice bicycle.

I worked at a local hamburger place for another summer. They went out of business, but it was nice while it lasted.

Another summer job was at K-Mart (motto: Shop Smart. Shop Somewhere Else). The manager went to my church and hired me to work in the garden department. I moved to the toy department a bit later and then went back to school.

Right after high school, I worked a summer at Whataburger, doing the typical fast food stuff.

During my first two years of college, I worked in an English tutorial lab, helping students with essays and such.

For the next two years of college, I worked in a computer lab (Apple ][es). That's where I began my love/hate relationship with computers.

Right out of college, I got a job with a pottery manufacturer packing pottery for shipment. The owner lied to me, so I quit.

In grad school, I worked as a graduate teaching assistant, teaching Freshman English classes. I also briefly worked with an inventory company, counting grocery store goods.

After grad school, I began teaching English classes part time at a local junior college. I'm still doing that, though not this semester.

I also started working for a business forms printer, doing computer graphics work. I don't get to do much in the way of high-end graphics, but I'm (as far as I can tell, anyway) about the best typesetter in (at least) South Texas. I'm still with that company, though I'll be leaving in the Fall (yes, they know I'm leaving; I want to leave on good terms with them since they've been good to me overall. It's just time for me to move on to something else now).

I'm in school now to become a massage therapist. I plan to do that and teach part time for a while. I will likely go back to school and take some art classes and work toward becoming a better graphic artist, but that is a future job, not one I have already done.

Derf, nice to hear you giving your employer a good heads up upon leaving. Not everyone feels so good about their employers to do such a thing.  Thumbup

Also I think the graphic arts sounds great and about the massage therapist occupation I think you'll do well because you have never rubbed any of us here the wrong way.

I'm not quite sure whether to applaud you for the nice sentiment or boo you for the pun, so I think I'll just do both and leave your karma where it was (parked there in the garagema).  TongueOut

Another summer job was at K-Mart (motto: Shop Smart. Shop Somewhere Else). The manager went to my church and hired me to work in the garden department. I moved to the toy department a bit later and then went back to school.

That reminds me of a job I had at Angel's home improvement center, worked myself up to assistant manager, being the low man on the totem pole meant that I got to close the place a lot, I had a lot of fun with the closing procedures. I had to make several announcements leading up to the official closing time at which point I would say "Angels is now closed, thank you for shopping and saving at Angels". That got boring after a while so I would do variations like, thank you for hopping and bopping at angels or thank you for stopping and slopping at angels, or flipping and flopping at angels. Another type of announcement was usually made when there would be some customer or customers looking around the lumber yard or hardware store 15 or 20 minutes after the 3 or 4 closing announcements, I would ask the night shift fork lift driver to use the PA system and ask if the yard and store were clear, when I heard this I would reply "the yard and store are clear", he would respond with "RELEASE THE DOGS". The last minute lookie-loos would leave in a hurry at that point. BounceGiggle BounceGiggle
