We're all just victims of circumstance

Aaron Eckhart has been cast as Harvey Dent in the sequel to Batman Begins. It is also rumored that Maggie Gyllenhaal will be replacing Katie Holmes as Assistant DA Rachel Dawes.

Christian Bale, Michael Caine, and Gary Oldman are returning and Heath Ledger will be playing the Joker.

I like Aaron Eckhart quite a bit.  He's one of the few actors I would actually use the word 'affable' to describe.  Being one of the few who truly enjoyed him in THE CORE, I like his being involved.

But....Maggie Gyllenhaal playing Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes!  That's exactly the crap I was afraid would happen.  They screwed up a little the first time with Holmes as ADA Dawes(should have given it to someone with better acting chops, that's all; nothing personal) but now they're going to compound the problem by simply 'installing a new Saavik'.  If they insist on keeping the character, work on it with Holmes...and with the writers.  A few Batman films down the road, they'll look back across 'em and(like many other multi film series)gaze upon an jagged timeline of inconsistent casting and band-aid riddled continuity doctoring.

In my opinion, the best move would be to jettison the role altogether.  Female roles(Catwoman excepted)have always been a weak link in the Batman films.  They underwrite them, over-cast them and the audience usually detests them.

We've come a long way from the era when the threat of a cultural panic required an 'Aunt Harriet' character.  So why labor over it now.

Sorry, a bit of a rant there.  But this is one of those things about studio movie making that I absolutely, positively detest.   So here's a little Gene  Twirling Simmons impression to take the edge off.
