I recall seeing a movie when I was a kid that had some strange serpent-like creatures on a boat (not Deep Rising; this was early 80's).  I don't remember too much else about the movie except one scene in which a guy is assailed by one of them and begins bashing it with a fire extinguisher, or something along those lines.

The only other thing I remember is that the film was extremely dark and that the creatures had what appeared to be skulls for heads.  I could be wrong about the latter part, as I was only about 3-4 when I saw this.

Three movies come to mind: "Deepstar Six," "Leviathan," and "Endless Descent." My money is on "Leviathan" with Peter Weller. Here's the IMDB Page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097737/

However, none of these take place on a boat (the first two take place on an underwater lab/mining facility and the latter takes place on a submarine and secret cave system deep within the ocean depths) so I'm probably wrong.  Wink But after all the snow we've gotten in my neck of the woods, maybe Hell has frozen over. In that case, I could be right!  TeddyR

It's none of those.  It actually predates them.  If I remember right, the title had either "within" or "inside" in it.

This sounds like The Intruder Within.  Chad Everett was still trying to play the leading hunk years after "Medical Center" was cancelled.  As soon as I read the original post, this is the movie that sprang to mind.  Fits the time frame and the monster had a head that resembled a skull.  Here's the IMDb link:  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082565/

Hope this helps.

Yeah, I think that's actually it.  I've been wondering whether or not I fabricated that one.  Thanks!

Ah...I remember The Intruder Within and how it scared the crap out of me when I was a kid.
The film actually takes place on an oil drilling rig instead of a boat.

My wife, who was a big Chad Everett fan actually wanted to see this film, about halfway through she said something like, well he probably has bills to pay, that's why he did it. I enjoyed the movie, it's worh watching Thumbup

Ahh... I was about 4 the last time I saw it, so I thought it was boat.  I wouldn't mind picking this one up sometime in the future, for the sake of nostalgia if nothing else.  Of course, I'll have to do a little digging, but it's worth it.
