Just got the dreaded phone call, my cousin finally succumbed to cancer yesterday.  She was actually my sister's twin cousin -- they were born 2 days apart (my mom insists there was no coordination going on, despite the fact that my other sister & her "twin" were born a couple weeks apart and me & my "twin" were a couple of months apart).  She was about 46, with two young girls 6 & 9.  A couple of years ago she had gotten bladder cancer that eventually had to be cut out (with loss of bladder.)  We all had hope that was the end of it, but on Christmas Eve mom got a phone call that it had spread to her hip bone.  Pretty soon it was in her lungs too.  At that point we all pretty much figured out it was only a matter of time.

We all pretty much played together as kids, but then we all grew up and sort of drifted apart, though on friendly terms.  I saw Shelly a couple of years ago.  Not sure exactly what I'm feeling at the moment, just needed to get this off my chest.  Thanks.

Anyone else have a story they want to share?

I'm sorry to hear this. I really feel for those poor kids. Having my mom die was always one of my greatest fears as a kid. No child should endure it.

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.

My empathy on your loss. I know about "the call." Two weeks ago today I got a call from my cousin saying my father had been taken to the hospital, and that he was in ICU with internal bleeding from an unknown source amd not expected to live. Though, it seems like no news is good news As after making several calls to his wife, I have heard nothing more, so I presume that while he may still be in the hospital, he is expected to recover.

I lost a 16 year old student a couple of years ago . . . she was in her yard playing with her sister, and her aorta ruptured.  Not a day goes by that I don't think of her . . .  she was one of those kids that made you glad you chose to be a teacher.  Speaking at her funeral was probably the hardest thing I ever did.

I must have watched a million horror movies, read tons of true crime books, but when death hits close to home...I have a real hard time with it. A few years back,an old freind of mine's parents were murdered in their home. They were beaten and the house set fire. I had dated this girl in the 80's,and saw her daily...and knew her parents well. It is a very small town we live in,and it hit every one hard. They were very nice, old couple. It took a couple of years to find the scumbags who commited the crime, two guys and a girl looking for money for drugs. It was horrible. She stayed at my house for a while...she had to get help...she lost her mind.
My ex-brother in law went apes**t and shot my ex's boyfreind in the back with a 12 gauge shot gun as well.It scared and confused my sons...they were very young. They couldn't understand why their Uncle did such a terrible thing. The other kids at school hounded them about it for a while....how to you try to explain to 5 and 7 year olds about senseless murder?

   It's horrible. I am sorry .

We have not lost anyone close in a little while.  The last to pass was my grandmother (father's side), about five months after we heard that she had lung cancer.

What I do encounter very often, due to my duty station, is military honors for active duty, retired, and veterans.  One the average, I believe my unit performs two funerals a week.  Most are for older veterans and retired, but we have had a number of active duty Marine funerals and those tend to be younger Marines.  In fact, I think that our last three active duty funerals have all been for twenty year-olds (one may have been 21) and all passed on in Iraq (two combat, one non-combat).

We all expect to see our grandparents and parents pass; it is so much harder to lose friends, siblings, cousins, and others who are our age and younger.

Sorry to hear of your loss, Raj.

Like RC said we witness and even joke about many deaths in the movies we discuss on this board but we certainly know the difference and feel pain when it hits close to us or those we care about.

I lost a good friend to suicide a couple of weeks ago. It was all so tragic and senseless. As someone said at his service I only wish he'd realized how beloved he was and how grateful every one he'd helped (he was a social worker for low-income people with AIDS) was for him. What makes it worse is now his memory is sullied for many and some will only discuss his death in hushed, confused whispers.

With topics like this coming up, should we remake the personal board?

No.
These things come and go.

It's best to just experience them and let them go.
No use dwelling over them.

Believe me...I know.
