I remember seeing a film when I was younger, which was the 80's, which I always thought was a Sinbad film, which featured the character being attacked by what I believe is a giant hand as he tried to ascend a tower.  I don't recall the hand being superimposed, I think it was a giant prop, does this ring any bells with anyone?

Thanks.

The Sabu version of The Thief of Baghdad had a giant prop hand in it (the genie's hand). I don't remember it attacking someone trying to get into a tower though.

I'll check that out, thanks, I don't think it is one of the Sinbad films but one very similar in style and story.  I just seem to recall someone trying to get out of the way of this giant hand, I also seem to recall the hand having a spiked glove on but this may just be muddled childhood memories/wishfull thinking.

If it's an hero ascending a tower, it's likely an attempt to rescue a princess (the Rapunzel story always comes to mind). Tis is quite common in Fantasy films. Your description sounds vaguely familiar.

Could it be "Captain Sinbad" starring Guy Williams, I recall him fighting a giant hand in this movie.
Go to IMDb and look up Guy Williams as Captain Sinbad, there's a poster you can see, shows him and the hand.
I tried to post it here but it's under license and I just can't get it to post.

I might be wrong but this sounds very much like Jack The Giant Killer but that came out in 1961. It does sound like it, though.

I think this must be it, that hand on that posters looks almost identical to what I remember, thanks.

It's not what you say, it's how you say it.

CAPTAIN SINDBAD.  I wondered if that might be it.  It's one that comes up often in these discussions.  I was impressed by it as a kid and haven't seen it since.  It may be worth tracking a copy down.

Oh, yeah. No doubt about it. It is "Captain Sindbad" w/ Guy Williams and Pedro Armendariz. Guy has to get to Pedro's heart, which is kept in a tower, otherwise Pedro, who is the villain in the film, is immortal. Guy, overcoming a number of obstacles, gets to the tower, he climbs up to the top of the tower, where Pedro's heart is, only to face one more obstacle, a giant hand, which is protecting the heart. One of my favorite movies as a child.
