I am afraid not.  Torrent sites usually operate in gray legal areas and that is something I do not wish to tread upon with the website.

I have a question, possibly stupid, but mainly due to ignorance, what is a torrent site? Question

I have a question, possibly stupid, but mainly due to ignorance, what is a torrent site? Question

BitTorrent is a distributed file transfer protocol.  It works by breaking up a big file (like a movie) into small pieces, and each piece can be loaded from different locations.  This distribution process is often called by the slang "torrent."  There's really no such thing as specifically a "torrent site" as the term "site" is usually used.  The files don't come from a specific server like most other web content.

What this user is asking is if there is a site providing links to active torrents.   For music and movie sharing, torrents are, as Andrew said, a legal gray area (at best; some are very clearly illegal).  There is a LOT of legit stuff (like various Linux distros) using torrents; my point is only that torrent itself is not illegal, but a lot of folks use it to distribute stuff they should not be distributing (without license to do so).

Hope this helps.

I've heard that some people use it to watch shows that have yet to air in this country. Like Doctor Who for example. Just as an example mind you.

Of course, I'm sure those folks also support such shows by purchasing the overpriced DVD sets when they become available. Again, just something I heard.

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.

There are actually quite a few good B-movies that are apparently in the public domain.  Most of the movies in the 50 movie packs are, for instance.

You could also try Archive.org for some of those public domain classics. I got a decent copy of Fritz Lang's M there, and I think they've got Reefer Madness and some of the other famous exploitation films there too. It's all straight-up downloads too, though the DVD-quality versions (for obvious reasons) usually take hours to download.

Do you mean those mp4 files, or the flv files?

I happen to be one of those geeky programmer types, though I'm more into digital video editing specifically than any kind of programming. The problem is probably that you don't have all the right codecs to play the file. Some players do come with codecs, notably the Media Player Classic that I use for viewing the more exotic stuff I sometimes get, but it's better to get all the codecs installed separately so that all your players can use them. The K-Lite Codec Pack comes as a self-installing set and could probably fix most of your viewing problems for you.

Of course, if you're thinking to burn your files to VCD or DVD and make them viewable somewhere besides your computer, you'll have to get into some of that geekier video editing stuff you've neglected, but if you're just looking to do some private viewing, don't throw those files out too soon! I'd suggest looking into video editing as a hobby anyway, since I suspect that the current DVD format wars will eventually end with the long-anticipated merger of computers and TVs into one big box, and the conversion of every last movie and TV series into universally playable video files on the hard drive--with or without the consent of the movie industry. Knowing a bit about how to copy and convert movies from one medium to another may get to be quite a valuable skill for a while in the near future.
