I managed to finish "Mad Doctor of Blood Island" the other night.  Since I started to watch "Beast of Blood," I can observe that the quality of the movies is diminishing as the series progresses (though the monster in "Beast of Blood" is a big improvement).  "Brides of Blood" is easily a two slime, maybe even a weak three.  "Mad Doctor of Blood Island" is a single slime.

In this movie, a doctor comes to Blood Island with his unhappy girlfriend.  They find her father is still living on the island, but he has become an alcoholic in poor health.  They also discover that the native population is living in fear of evil spirits and magic.

A mad scientist and his bald henchman are the true cause of the evil that has come to the island.  The scientist is conducting experiments in search of immortality.  This apparently involves injecting victims with a rogue strain of chlorophyll that transforms their blood into a green sap and causes bark to grow on their faces.  It also makes the afflicted person strong and violent.  Oh, and the mad scientist has one of those little trees that dance when you play music near it.

One of the major plot elements is another young man who has returned home to the Island.  Turns out that his father is one of the experiments and mutant daddy gets loose, eventually killing his cheating wife (who was bunked up with the mad scientist and in on the whole thing).  Daddy recognizes his lost son in the nick of time and does not kill him.

There are two awkward sex scenes.  One is between the American doctor and his American girlfriend by a fire.  I appreciated the scene, but it was very strange and screamed a page in the script that said "Insert sex scene here."  The other scene is a riot.  The young guy (who was looking for his father) apparently had a young crush on a girl when he lived on the island.  He meets her again and she comes to his bedroom one night.  After they are done, she tells him that if she wants any more of his services, she will tell him.

Man, that guy must have been an awful lay.  It is not as if she has a lot of options for romance on the island.  How does it feel to be slightly less pleasing than a polished tree branch?

Anyway, end of the movie: good doctor discovers the cave and defeats the mad scientist and his assistant in a fight that involves a crowbar, large knife, and fists.  The unhappy I-can't-find-a-good-partner native girl sets fire to the laboratory.  Last, but not least, the mutated father shows up to extract his pound of flesh too.

Not a very good film.

I have an extensive review (by IronWolfe) of this one on my site.  Some great screen caps too!

I also made it through Brides of Blood with relative ease, but have gotten hung up on this entry in the series. I cannot seem to get past the opening when the woman is running through the jungle and the camera is zooming in and out at about 50 times the speed of light. It's almost seizure-inducing.

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.

Good grief how did I fail to mention the camera zooming in and out whenever the monster is involved?  It is annoying the first time they do it and then they continue to do it every single time something "scary" is going on (which is a lot).  I think the freaky camera work was what finally annoyed Katie enough to get up and leave.

I actually liked the zoom-lens device. Overall, I really like all of the Blood Island films. Beast being my favorite , Mad Doctor Next, and then Brides.

I just watched Revenge of Dr. X (the venus flytrap man movie written by Ed Wood) and the opening credits on that print are the ones for THIS movie, because one of the distributors screwed up, as there is no Dr. X or Revenge in the flytrap movie.

Evan, I think your order of enjoying the films is exactly the opposite of my own.  Interesting, but that makes a weird sort of sense.  Whatever detracted from "Mad Doctor of Blood Island" and "Beast of Blood" for me, worked best for you.

In Mad Doctor I enjoyed how the monster looked and I thought the zoom-camera was cool. In Beast, I really liked the Headless monster and gunfights. I still enjoyed Brides but I didn't like the monster and it had nothing to do with the later movies.

To me that one is a neglected Wood near-masterpiece. The first time I saw it I had no idea Wood had written the thing due to those titles, but my ears perked up immediately with the dialogue in the first couple of scenes, particularly all the stuff about "mathematics". For some reason it struck me as prime Wood dialogue before I even knew he'd written the thing.
