Mexico City is HUGE!!! Something like 28,000,000 people in the general area, and it is very polluted. You'll fly into a orangey-yellow haze that will burn your eyes if you are not use to it, you'll smell the sweet smell of sewer just under your feet you can see through the grates on the sidewalk... I nice mix of burritos and post burritos. Not sure I'd waste a week there ... plenty to see but to much of a headache to have a good time.

Not really aware of any hostels in Mexico like in Europe, but hotels are plenty and it depends on your standards, if you'll stay in hostels I'd say they're not 5 star standards. LOL I never looked for them so I don't want to say 100% they aren't there, but I think that's more of a European thing.

What no hanky panky ... what's the point? Wink

Thank-you, Dean.

Just one more piece of advice for those wanting to take a Mexican train to Copper Canyon. It offers both first and second class seating. First class has a snack bar. Second class doesn't. Go first class.

What Cheeze offered was good advice, but he forgot to say one important thing. Have fun, but don't get drunk. Not only in Mexico, but in any foreign country, being drunk makes you all the more vulnerable to pickpockets, muggers, robbers, thiefs, rapists, especially for women, and you may even wind up dead. Either by accident or on purpose.

And Dean, when you get back from Mexico, let us know how your trip was.

Here's my tip:
Don't drink the water or have drinks with ice in your glass. INCLUDING on the airplane or brushing your teeth. Sorry but i know someone who went there and got a really nasty bout of montizumas revenge. They're water isn't the cleanest and most foriegners are intolerant to their little ameobas

Avoid getting arrested, nobody wants to end up in a mexican jail. Avoid the barrio, some tourists want to see the "real" country but you don't wanna be the gringo who gets mugged.  Now if you go to one of those island areas you're probably going to be better off. My folks went to see those aztec ruins and had a wonderful trip. Pack comfortable shoes, also i would be wary of carying around expensive cameras if you just want regular pics and aren't a photographer a disposable works great.

Also i second the bit on haggling, in most countries like this EVERYTHING is negotiable and you're likely to get some real deals. Don't cop an attitude with mexicans either...they don't have the same sense of humor or tolerance as you may, i live in texas so I know..lol
