Years ago, I was selected to appear for jury duty in a civil case involving millions of dollars between two feuding local corporations.
I wasn't accepted as a juror.

Guess what?
I recently received another summons!

I'm supposed to appear for jury selection this coming Monday March 12th.
I have no idea what case it is for.

Part of me wants to actually be on a jury and another part of me doesn't.

Have you ever been up for jury selection and/or have you been on an actual jury?

I may just have to watch the Pauly Shore movie Jury Duty sometime soon.   Smile

My cousin's wife just got a summons for jury duty in federal court, two and half hours travel time away according to the letter. To make it worse she has a newborn baby. Maybe she can get it rescheduled, since it's supposed to be hard to get excused from it.

I told this in another thread on jury duty and bureaucratic red tape.

I got called for jury duty when I was 21, was told I would get struck from every pool since I was so young, my stepfather used to be a jailer and bailiff. Turned out I was the youngest person in the jury pool.

I got struck from one jury for a civil suit with a man suing his insurance company for non-payment of a policy. I was in the pool for two juries being stuck at the same time since the same defense lawyer was working both cases, both DUIs, trial to start right after that one to start the next day. Turned out I knew one of the defendants, and some details of his case, so I was off of both of those. Those of us not picked for those cases were told we would be excused since there was a light docket that week, and ther had been a lot of plea bargains and out of court settlements during the two days we had been there.

The highlight of my time on jury duty was at the beginning when waiting to give our information on the first day. Sitting beside me was an attractive middle aged woman who began to play footsie with me. Sadly, they split the main pool in two, by evens and odds, so I didn't get a chance to find her again until the end of things while waiting to draw our pay and excuses for work. Plus she was married.

A little teasing flirting and $20 whole dollars was all I had to show for doing my civic duty.

About three years ago, my company and the place that holds the copyright on most of the movies we hold (MNet at www.mnet.co.za) got involved in a copyright case that has been dragging on since then.

I was told that I would be supoenaed because I was the guy who supplied MNet's contact details to this copyright defaulter who purchased a VHS copy of Shangani Patrol from the company and then made a DVD master out of it (whew) and proceeded to sell it on his website. He stole and sold the thing, now I'm in the kak? (SA slang for being in something very soft and very smelly)

I'm still waiting, I've heard nothing since.  Question

Yaddo, sorry about your problem with the lady: I will give you some karma to put on your footsie.  TeddyR

Completely OT, but when I first read that I thought "stuff like that just doesn't happen to me."  But then I remembered that once on a bus in a college town, a very attractive young lady sitting next to me started rubbing my leg with her foot.  We never spoke and never saw each other again.  It was just one of those "moments."

Back On Topic:

I used to be in court ALL THE TIME.  I averaged about 15 subpeonas per month, though most of those were 'telephone stand-by.'  I was present for the picking and seating of many juries.  One interesting story comes from a time when numerous people were openly cheering when they did NOT get picked to sit on the jury.  The whole thing became like a high-school game show, where the 'contestants' were trying to NOT get selected.  I don't recall specifically, but the defendent was on trial for a felony, so five years minumum (a lot of my cases were the 30 year kind), so this was no small deal.

The prosecutor, a lady who took her job very seriously, was so upset by the behavior of the jury pool that she 'ranted' about it during her opening remarks.  She was talking about how both the defendent and the state (ie, THEM) DESERVE to have a trial by jury.  It WAS all pretty disgusting, especially when you think about the fact that not being picked from THAT case did not mean they could go home.  They would simply be on the panel for the next case (our panels were for the whole week).

I bet a lot of those people are ones that mouth off constantly about how "the system" is a joke, etc.  It would not surprise me at all....

I've only been selected for jury duty one time.  I informed the Clerk's office of my 'situation' (my background in law enforcement) - basically, I knew I would never be seated on a jury and did not want to waste my time and theirs.  Still, though, this caused me a LOT of guilt - still does.  I'd serve on a jury in a minute, if I'd ever get picked.

I've been on Jury Duty 5 times in the last 15 years, I swear the next time I get called I'm going to shout out ... "FRY HIS ASS!" or "They deserve all the money they can get out of those scum bag" ... I'm sure to be dismissed. LOL

Last trail I was on lasted 2 weeks. Some guy faking a back injury and suing for millions ... we (the jury) went to lunch at a local diner early on and saw the plaintiff getting around fine, in and out of cars, walking, standing, setting etc with no pain and in the court room he could barely move to set down took a good 5 minutes due to his extreme pain (it was almost an Oscar worthy act.) ... 2 week+ on trail, 10 minute for us to render a verdict ... awarded $0.00

I've never been on a trail that long!

It sucked, every expert of every kind from both sides had to come give their views.

Uma = Yumma.

Never been  on a jury.  I'm told if you are reading a "smart book" (like Shakespeare or such) your chances of being picked go down.  Apparently lawyers don't want smart jurors.  Though of course everyone here who's been on a jury is the exception (he hastens to add.)

I have been on Civil Case jury. Some guy trying to sue for injurys that were obviously not caused by the car accident. I refused to wear "business attire". It was summer and wore my jeans boots and Circle Jerks Group Sex T-Shirt. I still got picked for juror number 1. Judge didn't give a damn what I was wearing either.

Its pretty hard to get out of a juror when you see the lawyers. They really make you look like a ass in front of everyone if you have a excuse or don't speak english. It's pathetic these Lawyers.

For the first several years that I received Jury notices I just wrote on them that my dad and uncle were in law enforcement, I was excused. Later on when I received them I was taking care of my mom, I was excused also. Later on they changed the rules about law enforcement so I ended up going. When the lawyer asked if I was related to anyone in law enforcement I said,"yes". He asked if this would change my opinion in anyway? I said,"no." I could of said yes to get out of it, but I was curious. I've seen on the news how these people have gotten off when they seemed guilty to me, by what they have shown on the news. I know they don't show everything that takes place in the court room. I wanted to see everything and was I sorry. I was on a murder case. I thought I could handle it. I've seen dead bodies, bodies covered in blood, bodies literally crushed, bodies puffed up beyond belief. My dad was a detective for the local police dept., he would bring home some gruesome pictures.
Anyway everything was going great until they turned on the TV and popped in the tape. There lay the man that was murdered and there I almost lay by watching it. The brain picked up on "this is real......not a photograph." I immediately started staring at the red light on the TV to keep me from passing out. I made it through but the next time they ask if certain things bother me it will be "YES."
It turned out he was guilty for Murder 1. There was no doubt he had done this and how he did it. If there had been one little speck of doubt he would of got off. That's how these people get off.
I found it to be a very interesting experience.  Smile

I was called for Jury Duty about 9 years ago. I was selected for the jury and we were sworn in. Then before a court date was announced, the accused party plead guilty, so we never had to come in. Since we were sworn in, we still got paid our whopping five bucks.

That was the last I was called until about a month ago. I got a letter in the mail saying to call in the day before. I called in and was told that I was not needed.

Hopefully it will be another decade before I get called again.

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.
