Umm, how? Would you like it if someone killed a cat or dog even if they ate it later when there is an alternative? Vegetarians think this way about all animals.

Dog and Cat is widely eaten in parts of Asia (In Honk Kong it's called siopao and it's quite tasty.) and also in some other parts of the world. Just as cute fuzzy little guinea pigs are a tasty treat in South America, and bug are in many parts of the world. Shoot some places still eat people. Go down to the bayou here is the good old USA where Nutria is still widely eaten. In other place around the globe Horses are eaten, Camels and about anything that walks, flies, wiggles, swims etc.

Frankly it doesn't bother me what people eat (as long as I'm not on the menu) and if vegans want to be vegans more power to them. The ONLY complaint I have about vegans and/or vegetarians is when they want to lecture me about the ills of eating meat, that I'm MURDERING animals and animals are people too. (No they're not.) Even the one's that don't wear leather or fur and any thing involving animals that think they should force there lifestyle on the rest of the world just need to put a cork in it.

Don't really have many vegans and/or vegetarians around here as this is BBQ country and beef/chicken/pig/catfish/etc farms are everywhere. So we are mainly meat country.

You just seriously don't want to open a can of worms with me, Ash.

With regard to the, supposed, eating of meat for 'millions' of years (would have been nice if man had been along long enough to support that theory), primates, of which man is one, have a herbivorous digestive system. A herbivorous digestive system is longer than a carnivorous system (such as that found in canines) and takes longer for food to pass through it in order to digest properly.

Being that man became an animal capable of using fire and tools, he also, eventually, learned that raw meat would cause problems, often associated with spoilage and/or bacterium (he did not know the cause at the time), which could result in illness or death. Consequently, man learned that cooking meat (again, he didn't know why) would make it more acceptable to a primate's digestive system as it destroyed that which could make him ill; at least a good bit of it.

Why then, if man has the digestive system of a herbivore, would he resort to eating meat?

It would be nice if it were Spring year round, but that is not the case. Even in storage, food spoils, including vegetables, and is not readily available during cold and sparse times of the year; but other animals looking for the same food are. Being more of a tribal than migratory animal, man resorted to eating meat as a source of food when it was necessary. All animals, regardless of diegestive necessitations, will resort to eating meat, of their own species or another, when there is no food source available.

Why then, if man is able to more efficiently cultivate, grow, and store non-meat food products, does he continue to eat meat? Well, aside from thousands of years of eating meat in which it has become habitual and customary, man has an inherent bloodlust.

Man was not a meat eating animal out of design, but out of necessity. Man not only slaughtered and ate other animals in order to survive, but his own as well. There is a belief that man has an inherent memory, unconscious, of that early savage which even drank the blood and ate the flesh of his own kind. Every single culture, from tribal to the most modern, of man has folklore of bloodlust; from vampires to zombies, and even werewolves, there is a folklore of man as a savage creature which drinks the blood and devours the flesh of his own kind, harkening back to that unconcious memory of himself when he did it out of necessity.

You talk of mental disorders, Ash. Which sounds more like a mental disorder: giving in to a bloodlust and eating flesh, or not giving in to it?

That being said, I frankly don't eat meat because I don't like the idea of harming animals. I don't wear leather products either. But, that's my own thing; I don't push it off on others because if they want to eat meat and wear leather, that is their own thing and it is fine with me.

One thing you do need to understand about vegetarianism, which even a lot of vegetarians don't understand, is that vegetarianism goes back several thousand years, to at least the time of the Roman Empire. Vegetarian and vegetable have the same root word in latin which is vegetare, and means 'to make healthy'. Vegetarian does not mean someone who lives off of vegetables, but someone who maintains a diet primarily aimed at maintaining one's health.

I do not, however, eat meat, and use the term vegetarian myself to communicate that to others as that is what most people take it to mean and it saves me the breath of explaining it.

Being that you extended this discussion, you so deserve another round of the joke I have posted on this board twice, much to the chagrin of anybody else who has already read it:

Before I became a vegetarian, I did consider cannibalism.

Now it is known that among cannibals that they consider the palm of the hand to be the most delicious part of the human body.

I, however, absolutely would not eat anyone who has ever been to a palm reader.

I just don't like 'read' (red) meat. TongueOut

Lot's of vegetarians just don't like the thought of killing animals.

That is totally illogical.
Thanks for inadvertantly reinforcing my point for me.

It's just one of the myriad of reasons vegetarians and vegans give that I don't buy.

Would you like for me to define logic for you?

What you just posted was a complete contradiction of terms. Someone does not like the thought of killing animals and therefore does not eat meat follows a logical progression of thought. Suggesting that a logical progression of thought is illogical to you...well, I'll let you name that.

Siopao is a dumpling stuffed with anything really, YES EVEN VEGGIES! but in the slummy areas of Hong Kong they use cat, dog and who knows what else as it's cheap and plentiful. Things like beef are to pricey for the slum areas of Hong Kong. When I would travel to China to work you'd see skinned cat and other critters in the local markets. I learned not to ask what was in the food, I might not want to know.
Some call it a URBAN legend ... ummm no it's not. been there seen it and OMG tried some.

I like my steak well done.

On a side note: Being part of the Punk rock scene I have met a fair share of Vegan, Vegetarians and Straight Edge (no sex, drugs and drinking and at one time in the 80s no meat). While their cool doing their own thing (fighting for animal rights and keep a clean living) you do have the bad apples that make everyone look like asses. Like if you eat meat your not a Punk. Last time I heard Punk had no rules and don't tell me what to do. Oh by the way nice leather jacket. Or Straight Edge kids beating up people who drink. Oh yeah your so macho. I'm almost straight edge myself. I don't have sex because I can't get a girl, don't do drugs and really don't drink that much because I don't have money. Straight Edge by default. Its also a fad until you turn 21. TeddyR

Of course anything that is done like Vegan your always have your fascist like people who think themselves superior to everyone else. But it happens to all groups with some kind of goal. So don't judge the group I always say.

I'll take my steaks, preferably a Ribeye or Porterhouse, rare to medium rare depending on the size of the cut and/or what restaurant I am at.

I have to disagree with you here, Menard.  Homo Sapiens are omnivores.  One reason we grew larger brains than our common (with other primates) ancestors was that Homo whateveris (can't recall at the moment) did start eating meat.  Meat's got more calories than veggies, and the human brain uses 20% of each day's intake of calories.  Pre-homo sapien sites where tools have been found also have animal bones that have cut marks from the tools.  I'd say the evidence is clear that we evolved as able to eat just about anything, but meat was part of our diet.  We still are a young species, which is why we still have the digestive system of our vegetarian ancestors.

Still, whyever you eat what you want is fine by me (unless it's dogs.  Just my pet peeve)

Homo Erectus (sp) is the one you are looking for.

And Chimps (primates) eat meat too. They've been known to hunt down others primates and monkeys for food and EAT them... raw. So that's one vote for raw.

I said, if you'll bother to read TongueOut, that we have a herbivorous digestive system. Even with that, man, out of necessity due to survival, became a meat eater. Just because we eat meat does not change our digestive system. We did not evolve to eat meat for, had that been the case, our digestive systems would have evolved into that of a carnivore.

I can point out several veggies, and fruits, and grains which have more calories than meat, ounce for ounce.

And yet another thing I said reiterated for my pleasure. All animals have resorted to eating meat when necessary. Hunger does not have a menu whether an animal is a herbivore or carnivore. Dogs, which have a shorter carnivorous digestive tract, will eat plants if that is what is available. Herbivores will resort to eating meat when nothing else is available.

Would anybody else like to repeat something I have already said?
