This was the film of the evening the other night.  Katie was enjoying it a lot (she had never seen it before), but we did not get it started until late and she succumbed to the lure of the bed about 20 minutes before the end.

A comet is passing unusually close to Earth and most people are using it as an excuse for an early New Years Eve party.  However, Regina spends the night in a steel-clad theater projection booth with her "friend with benefits."  That turns out to be fortunate choice, because the comet turns most of the planet's population into red dust.  There are a few survivors who were only partially affected; the exposure turns those into sunken-eyed mutants that will eventually crumble to dust.  In the meantime they are a hazard to the few survivors, like Regina's boink friend (he gets clobbered with a wrench and possibly eaten).

Regina finds that her sister also survived, because the younger girl slept in the family's steel shed after a disagreement with their trollop stepmother.  The two girls eventually encounter another survivor, a fellow named Hector who seems like a decent fellow.  He lived through the comet's passing after passing the night in the back of his steel truck.  The girls are left alone when he goes looking for his family and get into trouble with some zombie stockboys at a department store (while having a "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" music montage while trying on clothes).  The fortunate arrival of some scientists and military types bails them out.

Except, the researchers are from an "Ark" project.  They were partially exposed to the comet when someone left the air filters open at the underground facility.  They now intend to drain the blood from any survivors they find to try and cure themselves.  Two cute kids are among the potential blood donors.  It is going to take some doing if the girls are to be saved.

Mary Woronov is the one female scientist.  Though she had more to work with, being the only one worried about the ethics of what they are doing, I enjoyed her part in the movie.

Some of the fun in this movie can be found by tormenting the two female leads when they are mulling over people they knew.  You can taunt them with "They turned to dust and blew away." often enough that it would drive them completely mad if they could hear you.  The other part of the fun is that the two girls argue over who...gets Hector.  Ladies, I hate to tell you this, but the genetic pool is so small that you are going to have to share.  After the partial apocalypse, everybody is going to be a practicing Mormon.

Glad this one finally got a DVD release.  I'll probably get it eventually.

I was wishing that there would have been some extras on the DVD, but I'm not complaining any as this has been one I was always wanting for someone to release on the format.

I've always thought that this was a fairly clever movie in terms of the plot and the types of characters they chose to make as the leads.

That was kind of a neat little movie.  Haven't seen it in years, but it was worth a watch.  Maybe I'll pick it up on DVD someday.

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.

I watched "Night of the Comet" for the first time this past weekend and was a bit disappointed with it. I expected more zombies and the plot was a bit muddled in spots. I'm going to watch it again sometime soon to see if a second viewing will change my mind. But as of right now, I wasn't too impressed with it.

It might not be a film that finds the right mix for you.  I do think that my appreciation for it grew after multiple viewings.  I would give it a solid 3 slime rating.

It's such an odd little movie that it does take a few viewings for it to really sink in what they were going for IMO.

Uzis? I thought they were useing Ingrhams.... the SMG, not the talk show host.
Not a bad flick. The thing that always gets me is...how did they arrange to see LA without traffic? What was that film schedual like?

Yeah, that was way before they could just erase everthing digitally.

Maybe just good planning or they used matte shots to simulate LA but filmed it somewhere else perhaps?

I did a little review in my Movie Wasteland thread on the board in the Movie review section. If anyone wants to check it out.

One thing that got me was the music. It seemed to up front and very important for some reason. Also who was that guy that we only saw a leg with khakis and a M-16 outside the compound fence in two scenes? One he was approaching and leaving? Was he a guard?

Before I had seen this, she kept asking what an Uzi was saying it had something to do with this movie. After having seen it I don't remember such a line, but that doesn't mean there isn't one.

They were Ingrams, the cover of the DVD release has one. I didn't have a picture of an Uzi handy (strangely enough at the time) so I would keep an eye out for them when we watched movies. I remember telling her "That's an Uzi." when we watched the awesome and funny The Gods Must Be Crazy and thought I saw one. Turned out it was probably a Czech made SMG from the CZ 23/24/25/26 series, which is the weapon the design of the Uzi was based on.

Shots of downtown LA may have been done on weekends, like they did in Omega Man, there was little traffic in that part of town in those days and it was easier to make things look desolate and empty (but you can find a few people and cars that shouldn't be there in that film if you look). Also LA being a film town (OK, THE film town) it's probably easier to get special permits to close off areas for filming. Haven't seen it in a while but matte shots sounds like another good possibility considering when it was made.
