Obscure film references in South Park

I don't know if you've noticed, but the creators of South Park have been having a little fun with their series, obviously inspired by the success of the cripple fight, which referenced the fight scene from "They Live". 

First, there was the episode where Cartman's mom finally tried to gain some control over her son.  At the end, when Cartman is struggling between his old bad self, and his emerging good self, they're clearly referencing the climax scene from "Altered States." 

Then there's the most recent episode, which was all about Easter, and the truth behind the bunny.  At the end, Jesus came along, and took down the episode's villain...by suddenly pulling out and using the weird, ninja-star-like weapon from "Krull".   

I wonder what they'll reference next?

Hahahaha. Yeah those guys love to sneak in obscure film references every now and then and do it wonderfully. My fave episode is the oldie with Mecha-Barbara Streisand (which looked like Mechagodzilla... with a HUGE nose!). Leonard Maltin shows up and turns into an Ultraman type hero, Sidney Poitier arrives and turns into a Gamera clone, and Rob Smith of "The Cure" turned into a screeching Mothra-type creature. Hahahaha.

Man I want to see the new episode with the Krull weapon (is it a glave?). I love the other two you mentioned, especially the reproduced fight from "They Live" with Timmay and Jimmy. Good stuff!

Thanks D-man, that one was nagging at the back at my mind for a couple of days. Did anyone see the latest South Park? I caught the last five minutes and enjoyed the "300" parodies (including the overuse of slow-motion as Mr...err... Mrs. Garrison made coffee for his... damn it.... her lesbo friends). Was pretty damned hilarious when Garrison and Xerxes went at it scissor style! LOL!

^ I didn't catch all of that episode, but I did see the part with Garrison and Xerxes going at it...hilarious.   

And Jesus throwing the Glave was actually borrowing from 3 movies...the glave was from Krull, and when it cut through Bill Donahue in slow motion, that was a nod to 300...then Jesus caught the glave, did a little pose, and put on a pair of sunglasses, a nod to Blade: Trinity.

I stopped watching South Park, I think that they are starting to go overboard with a lot of the subject material.  I love watching the older episodes.  I love the movie, oh well.

I will say that I will miss Butters, Timmy, Jimmy, Stan and Ike.

I just wonder how far they will go with the show???

Said scene is when Mike is under his brother Jody's b***hin' Hemicuda doing some tuning up(?) when suddenly the Tall Man's midgets knock the car off of the jack and trap Mike beneath it. Later, when Mike attempts to explain what happened to his older brother, Jody says something along the lines of: "Are you sure it wasn't that retarded kid Timmy from up the street?!" LOL! 

In other South Park news... I missed the "Night of the Living Homeless" episode last week and I"m still kicking myself for it. Anyone else see that?

"Night of the Living Homeless"

One notable film reference that came to mind was RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, with the homeless stumbling around saying "CHANGE! CHANGE!" rather than "BRAINS! BRAINS!". Several characters were trapped on a roof, which brought to mind DAWN OF THE DEAD.

I wouldn't say it's obscure, but kinda.  In a few early episodes, Cartman has a poster/bedsheet of Orgazmo.  Orgazmo was an indy movie that Matt and Trey wrote/directed/starred in when South Park was getting off the ground.

They also kinda referenced their cult classic/TROMA flick "Cannibal! The Musical" in a Thanksgiving episode where Timmy stars as Helen Keller in "Helen Keller!: The Musical."

If anyone hasn't seen Cannibal the Musical, check it out.  Very low budget, but as my uncle said, "This isn't even a b-movie.  This is like, an L- movie it's so bad."

Since new member Happy has resurrected this thread like so much zombie meat, one reference I noticed nobody bring up is the Trapper Keeper episode that parodies the Terminator movies and also finds Cartman turning into a hick town version of Tetsuo's big blobby form from the climax to Akira. "Kaneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeda!"

In "Butters' Very Own Episode" when Butters' parents are talking with several murderers, the murderers start to chant "Gooble gobble, gooble gobble, one of us! One of us!" which is a reference to the 1930s movie "Freaks!" I think that counts as an obscure movie reference.
