I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this.  I know its an old movie but I really liked this one.  The cinematography was typical Kubrick brilliance.  Kirk Douglas gave a touching performance.  The themes are extremely relevant to the modern day: the dark side of pride, the horror of war, who really gets harmed during war, the value of privates(lower class) vs generals (upper class),  the machiavelli motives of authority figures, standing up against injustice... and I could go on.

I really recomend this movie to everyone.

Great movie from 1957; Stanley Kubrick directed this one who directed a couple of my favorites.

This is one of the few Kubrick films I have yet to see.  I'm kinda saving this one for a rainy day though as I'm both a fan of Kubrick and have a historical interest in WWI.

PATHS OF GLORY (1957) is a great one for sure.

Here are some similar type films that I like.

GALLIPOLI (1981)
HENRY V (1989)
BARRY LYNDON (1975)
THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE (1951)

Another similarly themed movie is Breaker Morant.  It's well worth watching but rarely appears on tv.

I've seen "Paths of Glory." A two-fer.  One of the greatest anti-war movies of all time (IMHO.) Also one of the best films ever made about WWI. Again (IMHO.)

I saw it years ago. I liked it, the topic is fascinating and Kubrick, as usual, shows off his great technique. I'm not watching it again any time sure, I founjd it a very dramatic and depressing movie.

I wish more directors would take on WWI.  Mustard gas and nerve gas attacks.  Machine guns and dirty trench-by-trench warfare.  There are a lot of stories to be told there but due to America's limited involvment, it really wouldn't sell to a broad USA audience.

Paths of Glory is a great flim.  It was banned in France for a long time because of its portrayal of some of the French officers.  Kirk Douglas gives a great performance.  I highly recommend it because of it's subject (WWI) and themes (anti-war)!  One of Kubricks most underrated films.

If you are into WWI films, you may want to check out "The Last Battalion". It's made for TV, but production values are good. I personally didn't like it much, but as you said there are not many WWI films among to choose these days.

Unless you count the recent "Flyboys" (2006), that looks like another stinker. Saw the poster the other day on a local theatre and I didn't know those old biplanes could explode like firecrackers  Buggedout.

The makers of war films seem to have done a solid job over the last century of using depictions of the subject matter itself to condemn the very topic being depicted, and those involved in this film set the bar high.

This movie, Breaker Morant, Platoon, and maybe The Thin Red Line come to mind as deeply anti-war war films.  In contrast, for all its greatness and all its grim brutality, Saving Private Ryan at times fell in the tone of glorifying something about the experience of war. So did Band of Brothers, while The Pacific showed the all-around utter Hell that war tends to be for most of those fighting it.
