I'll watch anything with Jack Black in it. I don't know why I like him so much. I just do. I know a lot of people can't stand him, but personally, he's one of my favorite actors. And if it wasn't for Mr. Black, I would have never have watched the wonder that is
Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny, even though it wouldn't have been nearly been so wondrous without him.
The film follows Jables (Jack Black) and Kage (Black's partner Kyle Gass), two thirty-something slackers who meet on Venice Beach and form a rock band they call Tenacious D, as suggested by birthmarks on their rear ends. But when overnight success eludes them, they uncover ancient artifact that will make them the greatest rockers on the planet: The Pick Of Destiny, a magical gutair pick that gives anyone who uses it insane gutair skills. The D pursues the Pick, getting into mindless, albeit hysterical misadventures along the way.
I never really got into Tenacious D prior to watching
The Pick Of Destiny. They are really an acquired taste. While most people see them as two idiots writing incredibly stupid songs and performing them badly, to their fans they are the greatest thing to happen to comedy since The Three Stooges. Black and Gass have such great chemistry together in the film and actually give reasonable performances, even during the maybe six seconds of the entire runtime the film takes itself seriously. The musical numbers are really awesome, with great songs and lively performances by Black and Gass to go along with them.
Now, I really love drug induced hallucinations in comedy films, and
The Pick Of Destiny has one of the best ever put to film. It also has one of the most spectacular endings of 2006, with The D having a rock-off with Satan. The car chase and infiltration of a rock n' roll museum to get the titular pick were great scenes as well, with songs that are both hilarious and perfectly good as straightforward rock tracks as well. I have to give the make-up crew who worked up the Beelzebub costume credit too. For a comedy, this film has great effects.
Although many people may be turned off by the nonstop barrage of crass language and overall stupidity,
Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny is still great flick for stoners, fans of The D, and comedy fanatics everywhere.
