The fate of the last door to door salesmen

« on: April 30, 2007, 09:00:49 PM »

Anyone here fish?

I'm an amateur fisher and since I live near the Lake Michigan I have plenty of opportunities to fish, so I'm wondering if you guys/gals fish and also wonder what you guys/gals are catching.

For me all I've been catching is these damn Round Gobys. Not only are they a non-native species they're bloody ugly too.
Here's a pic.

I've been fishing as a hobby most of my life. I started with mostly freshwater back home.  Nowadays I live in the northeast next to the ocean so luckily I get out a lot.  I also do freshwater fishing here and there whenever I can.

I haven't been out much so far.  Just tinkered around a pond and caught a few sunfish.  I think the bass will start hitting more or less towards the end of may.

As for ocean, I haven't been out this year yet.  Last year proved pretty good for bluefish.  Nothing of immense size but worth a good time none the less.

Personally I think that perch is the best fish you can eat around here except maybe salmon.
Since you live in Michigan you ever catch one of the ugly gobys before?

 BounceGiggle Hi flackbait.

Sheesh: That thing looks like the person who would have become my mother-in-law had fate not intervened. Yuckies, they look the same: horrible face, bad pointy teeth (sorry, no teeth), scaly body.   TongueOut

I hope they taste better than they look.  TeddyR

They're so freaking ugly I never even thought about eating them. But I have heard they're supposed to be a delicacy in Russia so I don't know what they taste like.

You really should try them some time. You probably could get some bigger fish. I live in holland so I can fish off the pier at the state park.

I love to fish.
But only from a boat.

I have an old friend named Lonnie who is a year younger than me and is obsessed with fishing.
Has been for years.
He's so obsessed that it takes the fun out of it.

I've known him since I was 18.
He's one of those guys who'll bring five rods with him and cast every line into the water.
He's got a monster tacklebox with a zillion different lures in it.

He'll constantly be monitoring every line for the slightest hint of a bite while I sit back trying to relax, drink a beer and trying to enjoy the scenery.
All from a nasty, muddy shore.

And he isn't afraid to walk right into the river or lake either.

I like to give him s**t and tell him that he has O.C.F.D.
Obsessive Compulsive Fishing Disorder

Not me.
I want to be out on the water in a boat when I cast my line in.   Wink
I've been to some of the greatest fishing spots in Wisconsin and especially Minnesota.
Nothing beats a good fishing trip to Minnesota.

Well it all depends on where your at and what fish are coming by.  You have avoid a lot of scup and chuggies next to shore.  They would be the bluegills of the ocean by the way.

If they're like bluegill at least you could eat them right? I know around here its not advised to eat anything from the great lakes because of all the pollution in the water. I can't eat anything from the local inland lake either. On the map its called Lake Macatawa, but we locals call it Lake Macatoliet(poor nickname, but it's accurate).

A Fishing Story:

My grandfather was a MAJOR fisherman and we used to go with him as often as possible. Night fishing on Martin Lake near Sylacauga, Alabama was the best.

One night when I was about seven we were out fishing with our grandfather.  I was sound asleep while fishing, and managed to catch a HUGE crappie. That was the night I found out my First Baptist Church deacon grandfather coulsd cuss.  Smile

He had that fish mounted for me and I would have it still if Hurricane Andrew hadn't eaten it, but that's another story!

Bastard got my MAD magazine collection and my early MST3K VHS tapes, too

its been awhile since this post has been responded to so I was wondering how everyone was doing on fishing lately?  I've been going out a lot more at night fishing the ocean.  Last night I was using chunks of scup off a fishing pier and landed a pretty decent sized flounder.  It was a few inches short of the limit so I had to throw it back.  There have been monster scup in my area along with bluefish and stripers.

I used to love fishing, till I got bit by the arrowhead bug!  Now anytime I'm near water I'm looking for one of these!
