Granted, they might not have written a majority of what they performed.  But to say that some of their material isn't great is wrong.  You hear a song like, "Not Your Stepping Stone," "Pleasant Valley Sunday", or "Words."  Good songs. 

Plus, I like "Listen to the Band."  Not many people know it's them, as it's written and sung by Mike Nesmith.  Good underrated song.  Sounds like The Eagles or something.
