MAYPOLE The Real (1971)

Small | Large

The Real is a compilation released in 2005, that includes MAYPOLE's eponymous first album.  Great American band, much better singing than apparently a lot of bands that slipped thru them days, songwriting better, but not great.

My friend is a RENAISSANCE fan... he had sent me that excellent clip of that great band... playing "Mother Russia" at the Capitol Theatre 1976.  Though I liked some, more Pop leaning, I never strayed so deep into Prog Rock to get into maybe the best band of that stripe.

It's somewhat old news now but I just learned yesterday that the lead singer of an '80s Christian heavy metal band called MESSIAH PROPHET, Charlie Clark, passed away earlier this year. Their MASTER OF THE METAL album from '86 was a primo slab of '80s rock-warrior cheez ala Ratt/Krokus/Judas Priest back in the day. R.I.P. sir.

McCARTNEY

WINGS At The Speed Of Sound

Small | Large

I had it on vinyl, but not in many years.  I listen to it on YouTube.  It's hard to believe that it's over 40 years old.  I'm nostalgic for this album, and no longer sick of "Silly Love Songs" and always liked "Let 'Em In""She's My Baby" is still gross.  "Beware My Love" is over rated.  But I like the haunting tracks where PAUL does not sing... "Wino Junko" (written by the singer JIMMY McCULLOCH) and "Must Do Something About It" (JOE ENGLISH sings) and "Time To Hide" (written and sung by DENNY LAINE).  There is a pleasant atmosphere about this record, despite the drivel.  I like it!   Thumbup

I'm on a big RUSH kick today and am likely to be on it for the foreseeable future, as I just added a whole heap of their CDs to my collection at a garage sale this past weekend.

I've always been a 'casual' Rush fan (though I've been told that the phrase "casual Rush fan" is a bit of an oxymoron, haha) -- as in, till recently I was mainly familiar with Rush's "hits," but not much else.  When I come across their CDs on the cheap the past few years I've picked'em up, though, so up till now I've owned maybe a half dozen Rush albums. (Fly By Night, Moving Pictures and 2112 being my faves of the ones I do have).

So anyway, thanks to Yard Sale Guy I now have eight (!) more - A Farewell to Kings, Permanent Waves, Signals, Grace Under Pressure, Hold Your Fire, Presto, Roll the Bones, and Clockwork Angels - for a buck apiece, all in great shape. The guy I bought them from said he's gone all-digital with his music and has everything "backed up in the cloud" so he didn't need the actual CDs anymore. Good for him, I guess, but better for me, haha!

Today I'm listening to Farewell to Kings, Permanent Waves, and Signals. Tomorrow I'll dig into the next two or three, and so on, and probably will repeat this loop a few times till I've digested them all.

Added bonus, in addition to the Rush heap, I also got Deep Purple's "Perfect Strangers" and David Lee Roth's "A Little Ain't Enough" CDs, so it was a GREAT day of scrounging!
