Must have caffeine...

« on: May 06, 2007, 03:34:13 AM »

I just got done watching this, and it's a pretty good movie for a remake, apart from one particular detail that's been bugging the hell outta me...

BEWARE SPOILERS!!!!!!

Paul and Meg have brought the old man to the clinic and Paul, noticing the old dude has died, calls for the doctor and they pull back the sheet to discover that all that remains of the poor sap is his upper torso. Paul then runs across the hall to the doctor's office to phone the Sheriff's office, and is attacked by the blob and devoured by it right in front of Meg.

Now, both Meg and Paul do an awful lot of screaming during this scene. The doctor is in the room right across the hall, so by all logic, he should have heard this and come running, but he doesn't. In fact, his character just disappears without a trace and is never mentioned again.

What gives? El Santo's review of the film on 1000 Misspent Hours and Counting explicitly mentions him being killed. Is there a deleted scene somewhere where he's shown to get eaten or something? I'm awaiting the arrival of the David Bischoff novelization by mail, so maybe that will explain what befalls the good doctor, but in the meantime, if anyone knows anything about this, I'd appreciate some help with this glaring plothole.

It IS agood remake! A rarity among remakes,as it stands on it's own,and is not just a rehash or big budget rip off! Thumbup

It has been a while since I saw the movie.  What my memory tells me happens is that the girl passes out as her boyfriend's arm comes off and she falls away with it.  When she wakes up, the other people are there and think she had a bad dream while unconscious.

Foggy memory, I might have to pop the DVD in and take another look.

I wouldn't know. All's I do know is he's gotten some stuff wrong before, and he doesn't like the '76 King Kong. But, he does like Island of Terror, so I can forgive him. :)

I've actually never seen the original. Shocking, I know! As to what possessed me to see the remake first, I'm not entirely sure. I guess just because I'd seen clips from both and the 80s Blob looked more interesting to me than the 50s one - which I'm sure is a good movie itself, it's just that the 80s one grabbed my attention a little more.

What I loved best about the movie was the large supply of recognizable character actors I'd seen in other movies. Like Del Close (from The Untouchables and Next of Kin) as Reverend Meeker, Joe Seneca (Silverado and A Time to Kill) as Dr. Meddows the Evil Guv'ment Scientist, and Jeffrey DeMunn (the oldest of the death row guards in The Green Mile) as the ill-fated Sheriff Geller. Not to mention Paul McCrane as the equally ill-fated Deputy Briggs, Bill Moseley as a soldier, Pons Maar as an usher at the theater, Frank Collison as the theater's projectionist, Art LeFleur as Meg's father, and, of course, Jack Nance as the aforementioned disappearing doctor.

And, my favorite part was the fate of the loud guy in the movie theater who kept spoiling plot points for Meg's little brother and his friend.  I've never actually experience an encounter with such a jerkweed in a theater, but I can imagine what it must be like, so it was a real hoot when he winds up getting munched. Having been with a friend who had many fabulous and original shouted retorts to the screen while seeing THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW for the umpteenth time, the reaction of the elderly couple in front of us, turning and shushing my friend, made that particular showing memorable and well worth the price of admission . . . I can understand the elderly couple's reaction (having long before sat thru my first viewing under showers of rice, water pistol ejections, and toast, while trying to hear the damned thing) but that night with my friend was in the eight street playhouse !!!   TeddyR

The original BLOB also has a few familiar faces, and though not nearly as much of a shocker (or gross out) as the remake, the original creaky creamed corn has a unique creepiness that is unmatched.

The original BLOB has alot to recommend it and let's not forget memorable lines like:

Steve Andrews: “Let’s go Janey-girl!”
Jane Martin: “My name is Jane.  Just Jane.”

or

Jane Martin: "The little dog, Steve, the little dog . . . !

or

Steve Andrews: "Dave, I saw something tonight . . . some kind of . . . monster . . ."

or

Steve Andrews: "CO2! CO2!  Duh Dave?  Dave?  Can y'hear me Dave?  CO2!"

or

Danny Martin: “I’ll call him William.”
Jane Martin: “William’s a fine name!”
Danny Martin: “Uh, I don’t like William . . .”

I just realized something. In the remake, it's heavily implied that Dr. Meddows plans to capture the blob and use it as a biological weapon against the Russians or something. This is, in hindsight, pretty funny since the blob's only weakness is extreme cold, and Russia is known for its harsh winters.

Whether or not Meddows actually knew of the cold weakness thing is debatable; it depends how much Brian and Meg told him. His line about the information they gave him being really helpful suggests they told him quite a lot; however his men's rather sloppy handling of the creature, and the their insistence on using flamethrowers, grenades, and other incendiary/explosive weapons against it, suggests the teens didn't actually tell him much.

Welp I finally got David Bischoff's novelization of the film, which kinda-sorta solves the "missing doctor" problem. According to Bischoff's text, the attack on Paul lasts only a few seconds, and anyone responding Meg's screams would have gotten there immediately after the blob had left. It's a stretch, but plausible, the final answer to the mystery basically being that the doctor was still in the room down the hall during the attack.

Now what the novel does not do is give the doctor a name. Annoyingly, Bischoff gives names to almost every relatively important character except this doctor. However, there is some hope. Jack Nance is wearing a nametag for the role, and there's also the doctor's degree on the wall inside his office. Unfortunately I can't really make out what it says. This is an odd request, to be sure, but using the screenshots provided, can anyone here with a decent image-editing program decipher what it says on either his diploma or nametag, either by blowing that part of the picture up or sharpening it so the text is legible?

Why I am obsessed with learning this character's name, I don't know...

This is the only relatively decent shot of the diploma on the wall:

Some shots where his nametag is in plain view:

I know this is an odd request, but, hopefully someone here can indulge me.

My boyfriend scrutinized the scene and conclude his name is "Mack." But if anyone has any alternate theories, let me know.

A good flick.  Thankfully, it seems the remake that Dark Castle was planning has gone down the tubes.

I really enjoyed this one. I think I saw it about 5 or 6 times at the theater when it was first released. I even convinced both of my parents to go see it (dad didn't take much convincing, but mom practically needed an act of congress to leave the house at times) with me. I even dragged friends to see it on a couple of occasions. I remember really liking the song that played over the closing credits. I spent months haunting record stores in hopes of finding a soundtrack, but it seemed one was never released. I did manage to find the song many, many years later on Napster.

Wow, do you think you could E-mail it to me or something? In point of fact, I've been looking for it myself. It and My Science Project by The Tubes and Hold On* by Keta Bill from Beverly Hills Cop II are my favorite "lost" 80s songs. (Lost in the sense that no one remembers them hardly.)

*Hold On is the song playing at the Playboy Mansion when Axel, Billy and Taggert go looking for the bad guys. It's listed in the end credits, but was left off of the soundtrack release for some reason. There was a song entitled Hold On on that CD, but it was by Corey Hart and was a completely different song. I spent years searching for it aimlessly until I finally got lucky and some random guy sent me an mp3 of it.

As for My Science Project by the Tubes, I've been utterly unable to find it....
